Description

I ordered the J-Hook and brush combo. These are two tools that every beekeeper should have in their bee toolbox. The J-Hook is a standard metal hive tool. The quality is excellent and will last you for YEARS if taken care of properly. In fact you'll probably lose it before it fails you, so it's always good to have another as a backup! The brush has a nice length to it and the bristles are secure and soft. The bees will appreciate that! The brush has a wedge on the end, but I would use caution trying to use that to separate boxes or frames. The wood on the brush doesn't appear to be of hardwood, and might break easily if used to exert pressure on something. However, with the right care this brush will last many years as well. If you're a new beek, or a seasoned one like myself, you can't go wrong with these. The combo was $9.99 at the writing of this review and that's a fair price for this tool combo. This is a good value and combo pack. First, it's your typical J hook hive tool. These tools are sold everywhere but it's a quality functional tool. It performs well and lasts a long time. The brush is a really nice brush. It's the softer, lightweight brown brush that is gentle on bees. I've had the yellow plastic type brushes before and never liked how stiff they are. Honestly, I rarely use a bee brush but if I do the soft brown type is what you want, not the hard yellow type. Great value for two pieces of quality equipment for the bee yard. ... show more

These beekeeping tools are made well and are priced fairly. The brush is very soft which is a necessity when shooing bees out of the way. Injure just one of the bees and it'll aggravate them all. This brush ensures gentle treatment while moving them along. The multi-tool is thick enough and has enough weight to clean up even old crusty frames. The edge is sharp enough to do the scraping job without it being a sharp risk to you. The bright red color on the handle will help you locate the tool quickly after you've set it down. As i prep for the spring nectar flow, I went over my equipment and looked at what items might need adding. You can never have too many hive tools, and looking around I saw this J-Hook version along with a bee brush. Just what I need. I have only one J-hook (until this arrived) but it is the tool I always use. The "normal" hive tools are great, but that J-hook cannot be beat! The brush is nice and soft and looks well made. I would have preferred a longer handle with a hanging hook or a hole for a some sort of hanger. It has an odd tapered shape. Overall a great buy of important tools at a good price. The purpose of the bee brush is to GENTLY brush away the bees so you can access the frames. You don't want to use your hand,esp a gloved hand where you can't feel, becuase you can hurt the bee or damage it's wings. This bee brush is soft with lots of give. It's not stiff and should work just fine to keep your bees harm free when moving them out of the way. The J hook is exactly what I would expect. I like the durability of the stainless steel, ability to hang it up, the blade is beveled up for wax scrapping and the handle area is long enough to hold comfortably while lifting up on the frame edge. ... show more

This brush is smaller than all the bee brushes I've seen before but seems to work well. It has a single row of bristles made of horsehair that are somewhat stiffer than the multiple rows of fine, soft, synthetic bristles in most brushes. Overall the horsehair bristles do a fine job of gently sweeping bees aside, apparently without harming them. The only thing I don't like is that the handle part of this brush is thin and short. This doesn't interfere with it's function, only with the operator's comfort. I will probably extend and build up the handle in some way once I figure out the best way to do it. The hive tool and brush are both of good quality. The j hook hive tool is new to me and I'm eager to see how it preforms for me. I can definitely see how the j hook could make lifting frames out of the hive much easier. The other end kind of reminds me of a hatchet but I don't think chopping is its intended purpose. The brush has very fine and long horsehairs and shouldn't cause any injury to the bees. The brush did have a few wild hairs but nothing as pair of scissors couldn't take care of.
