Nice beehive but you definitely need to pre drill ALL HOLES prior to nailing frames and screwing together boxes. Note there are two screw lengths. For what? I have no idea. The instructions do not say. Either way, you need just about the skinniest drill bit you have to pre drill the frames, and then a few sizes up for the boxes. If I had wood glue, I would have glued all the frames before assembly, but I didn't and it's ok. Something to consider for strength of final product. How will these cracked boxes hold up? Only time will tell. I think I'll try to glue them when I get glue and re drill holes. ... show more

Minimal amount of wax but overall cute boxes. Assembly took some time. A few pieces of wood were chipped (not sure if due to shipping or packing or just cheap wood). A couple of frames split quite easily (see picture). There were no predrilled holes so you need to drill them in advance. You will also need wood glue. I hope these boxes stand up to time. Update: seller seem receptive. They are going to ship 3 frames to replace the damaged ones. Thus, I've added 1 star back. ... show more

Everything is wax coated. Results in great looking beehive. Not painting this. Bees should be comfortable. Parts accurately cut. Instructions brief. Not clear on which parts glued and nailed (frame tops). All parts and fasteners are included. Base board and top cover come assembled and complete. Previous reviews mentioned re-drilling hole deeper with small drill bit. I did this with good results. One small, minor split when putting together boxes. Be prepared for hammering in a lot of small nails for assembly of frames. Requires some care putting frames together. Easy to rate this 5 star. ... show more

I am a new beekeeper so nothing to compare these to. But, they were easy to assemble (I used wood glue along with the hardware during assembly), and they are very sturdy. I really like the look of the natural wood that shows through the beeswax coating. My bees are doing very well and seem happy in their new home. ... show more

Just made it through my first hailstorm with no problems! I have never built anything before, so it was an all-around test. I needed extra guidance on the best way to nail the frames, but it could have just been my total lack of skills with a hammer.

Best beehives for the money. I have bought 4 beehives and extra hive body and supers. Beecastle is a great seller, that trys to resolve problems. I plan on buying more beecastle beehives as my bee yard grows. Cons I had to buy extra wax to touch up most parts. They have several lightly waxed areas. I started drilling holes 1 size bigger to prevent splitting when assembling hives. The foundations don't have enough wax. Bees like to build bur comb. So I re wax foundations, and that solves the bur comb problem. I buy extra nails, I like 4 nails per frame. ... show more
