This lens is compact and produces very crisp and clear images for the investment. It is not too heavy and fits on a tripod well. The focal range of the lens is a good fit so I can carry the original lens that came with my camera and cover the entire range of 18mm through 300mm with just two lenses. I added a MACRO lens to my kit and find that combination to be pretty good for most situations. The VR and Autofocus on these lenses helps my old, shaky hands work better - grin. ... show more

    • The best normal to tele zoom for a DX Nikon
The best normal to tele zoom for a DX Nikon. I hate zooms, I only use them when it is to troublesome to attach an older, sharper, all-manual Nikkor. There are times when a zoom is very handy, and this one is pretty darn sharp -- better then the 200mm model. The VR function can give you 3 extra shutter-speeds higher than w/o VR -- it really works. You can hand-hold this beast in decent light! One star deducted for the slowness of the AF. Forget using it for sports, unless you take the time to learn the right places to be, and anticipate the action (what you should do regardless!). For auto racing, pan-zooming, this isn't a good lens. Be very careful when the barrel is protruding way out. This is a cheaper, plasticy lens. You can break it by bumping into something hard zoomed all the way out! This is not a super perfect lens - there is some color fringing under extreme contrast light conditions. But it works well on my Nikon D5200, focuses quickly, is compact, and light weight compared to other Zoom lenses I might have chosen. So I am very satisfied.

I purchased this lens for my Alaskan vacation. The zoom was perfectly situated for pictures of wildlife on the mountains, such as Caribou, sheep, and mountain goats. It also allowed me great close-ups of the whales in the straits. The lens worked perfectly with my Nike on operated flawlessly during the vacation. The lens is a little heavy.     • Factory Refurbished but.....
Lens was "Certified Factory Refurbished". Don't know if that had anything to do with my problems or if it's just a bad lens. I couldn't get it to focus properly. Used auto-focus and had problems. Focused manually and had problems. It was hit or miss as to whether or not it would focus. I have a Tamron 70-200mm and just bought a Sigma 150-500mm. Both of these lenses are heavy (compared to the Nikon 55-300mm) yet I have no problems getting a clear, sharp photo using them hand-held. I have other lower end Nikon DX lenses and they're great. So maybe this particular Nikon 55-300mm was just a bad one that slipped through the cracks. It's a lower priced lens, so while it may not seem fair to compare it to my other lenses that cost 3x as much,this lens wouldn't focus correctly at all, even on a tripod. Pretty confident that even though it was "refurbished" it was still defective. I'm currently shooting with a Nikon D5100. ... show more
