  • Annoying to install, but so far so quiet
Pros: * This cooler is whisper quiet. I have a Ryzen 5800X. If I put the CPU under load, I can barely hear the fan even with all 16 (virtual) cores at 95%+. * It is reasonably skookum. Nice and solid construction with six heat pipes and barely any flex in the fins. Once attached, it is solid and does not move around or sag. Cons: * I had to remove the video card to install the fan because the spacing is so tight. * The fan clips hold the fan in place pretty well, but were really annoying to install. They slide between the fins of the heat sink. Getting both sides of one clip to hold without one side popping out was a challenge for my big clumsy hands. Installing the fan was probably the most difficult part for me. * There is not much space between the fan and my memory sticks. This is not a problem in my system, but it may be for you if your memory sticks are tall. You may also run into space problems if your case is small: the cooler is very tall, so a narrow case might not have enough space for this beast. It also covers up the top M2 slot slightly. This is just a minor nuisance: something to keep in mind for future maintenance. Other notes: Installation is really the only gripe I have, but this is the case for most large CPU coolers that are good at what they do. There is no way around the fact that motherboards are densely packed with components, and a large CPU cooler will be a tight fit no matter what. Once installed, this is no longer a problem unless you need to get in there to swap components in the future. I have also had this cooler for a day so far. I cannot speak to its longevity but will try to remember to update this review after a year or so with any thoughts after using it for a while. ... show more

  • Works as intended as far as I can tell. Not a fan of the mounting.
The mounting was ok, but I personally am not too much of a fan of it. It appears to make good contact, but does not make me feel like enough pressure is being placed. Thermal performance seems to suggest otherwise. The fan mount to the heat sink is less than great. I have to remove the fan to get to the mounting screws. And unless I want to have the heatsink fan directly against the rear case fan in my case, it has to overhang RAM slot 1 with low profile DIMMs, and while not the worst fan attachment method, it isn't all that fun to remove and reattach. If you have DIMMs with tall heatsinks or lighting - forget mounting the fan on that side unless you have a pretty large distance between the CPU and RAM. As for its height - You should really check to make sure you have enough vertical space in your case. For me this thing actually pushes against the case side panel. The tolerances are actually in the "t'aint gonna fit" range. Thermal performance - Honestly I am not sure I should bother reviewing this as in my case - The processor I have seems geared to melt its own tdie if you really push it. Ryzen 7 5800x Idle ~30c with this. Normal load ~40-60c Heavy load ~60-85c MAX Load ~85c Prime95 max 85-91c As far as I can tell this works exactly as intended. This being said the Ryzen 7 5800x is a heat monster at actual full bore. Prime95 max heat test hits tdie to 91c instantly - is it realistic to expect anything to keep it from hitting max in that test? I am guess no, from what I can tell. There is no climb, no ascent to 91; it is at 30c idle, and in the next instant 91c. Cores will hover from 80-91c during that test and average at 86c I have dropped the cpu voltage down to 1.25 and it makes no difference. tdie will hit 90-91c instantaneously. Perhaps I just have a processor that has that quirk. Not going to fault the Heatsink for it. ... show more

  • YOU MIGHT NEED A 1700 BRACKET!!
** If you are getting this for a 12th gen intel CPU, you many need an additional 1700 bracket!** This cooler is compatible, but since intel switched up their mounting so much, manufacturers have not yet had time to include the newest bracket with all their products. be quiet! handles this very well though, as they sent me one for free. On their website, you can buy one for cheap, or upload an invoice for a 1700 socket mobo and an invoice for a compatible be quiet! cooler, and they'll send it. I got mine in less than a week. I have built dozens of PCs, and I come back to be quiet! dark rock CPU coolers whenever I get the chance. Their performance rivals top water coolers with a much cleaner look in my opinion. I much prefer air coolers to AIO water loops as they are often quieter, take up less space, and most importantly, they have a MUCH longer life span. The Dark Rock series has great performance, is always quiet, and I really just like the way it looks. ... show more

  • Quality in every detail. 20c difference immediately.
2 year update: Still love this cooler. I've never seen my CPU reach 70C in all this time. The only hitch I've found is that I had to move the fan to the other side due to adding RAM sticks because I have a microATX board. Was a 2 minute fix. Can't recommend this cooler enough. Wow this is nice. It's MUCH bigger than I expected and the quality is very evident. My Ryzen 5600x was hitting 88c in Battlefield 5. Now 66c is the hottest. The Wraith Stealth cooler that came with the CPU gave me pause before I even installed it. There were burrs and evidence of poor machining quality all over. Those burrs become immediate hot spots. The Dark Rock 4 is a massive precision machined heatsink with a quiet 120mm fan strapped on. It comes with a wealth of attachment parts that are clearly labeled and very clear instructions. There was no confusion on installation and it was easy. This product isn't cheap, but you will see the value the moment you open the box. ... show more
