  • 6-Year Review: The Silent King of Air Coolers
Style: Cooler
I purchased the Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black six years ago for a high-end workstation/gaming build. After over half a decade of near-constant operation, I can confidently say this is the best, most reliable, and quietest component in my PC. 1. Performance: Still Chilling After 6 Years When I first installed the D15, I was blown away by the temperatures. Even when overclocking my CPU, it kept temps well below dangerous thresholds. Fast-forward 6 years: I have never had a single thermal issue. The dual-tower, 6-heatpipe design is just as effective today as it was in 2020. The build quality is legendary; the heatsink has not oxidized, and the copper base remains perfectly flat. It regularly keeps my CPU in the 30s-40s°C at idle and keeps things remarkably cool even under heavy rendering loads. The cooling performance rivals many 240mm+ AIO water coolers without the fear of pump failure or leaks. 2. Sound: The Definition of "Silent" My biggest requirement was silence, and Noctua delivered. The two NF-A15 140mm fans are inaudible. I often find myself checking the case window just to make sure the fans are actually spinning because I can't hear them at all, even during intense cpu usage tasks. They use SSO2 bearings, which are incredibly durable and do not grind or hum over time like cheaper alternatives. Even when the fan curve ramps up slightly, it’s a low-frequency hum rather than a high-pitched whine. If you want a silent PC, this is the gold standard. 3. Aesthetics: The "Chromax" Touch The original NH-D15 is infamous for its beige/brown color scheme. The chromax.black version solves this completely. The matte black coating on the fins, the black fans, and the black anti-vibration pads look incredibly sleek and premium. Six years later, the black coating hasn't chipped or faded, adding a stealthy, high-end look to the build. 4. The Long-Term Experience (Maintenance) The mounting system (SecuFirm2) is, in my opinion, the best in the industry. It made installation straightforward 6 years ago. Since then, I simply remove it to clean off the dust out once a year. Installation & Maintenance tip: One fan I had to offset by a few millimeters due to RAM height. Still works great and just a heads up that it does not impede functionality or performance at all. Keep the fins clean with compressed air or even wife off with lightly damp cloth. I foresee this lasting another 6 years easily. 5. Reasons to Buy (Why it holds up) Absolute Silence: The fans are virtually inaudible in daily use. Excellent Thermal Performance: Keeps high-TDP CPUs very cool, competing with liquid coolers. 6-Year Warranty (and Longevity): Noctua provides a 6-year manufacturer's warranty, which speaks to their confidence in the product's lifespan. Long-term Support: Noctua often provides free mounting kits for new CPU sockets, meaning this cooler can be used for decades. Minor and relative "Cons": Size: This thing is massive and helps it look . Ensure your case has enough clearance (165mm+ height), but like I said earlier, your RAM height may require you to offset the front fan upward just a few millimeters...you can't really see the difference between fans. Cost (worth every penny: It is a premium product, but at 6 years+ of use, the price-per-year is incredibly low. Final Thoughts Six years ago, I wanted a quiet, powerful cooler that looked good in a black-themed build. The Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black exceeded all expectations. It has never failed, never made a sound, and never let my CPU get too hot. It is quite simply the best air cooler on the market. ... show more

  • Worth it - Excellent Air Cooler
Style: Cooler
Excellent air cooler and a very good deal for the price. I didn’t use the thermal paste it came with. I bought some NT-H2 separately, but NT-H1 is still good. These are very quiet fans. Almost inaudible. Higher speeds will generate noise, but still quiet. It was easy to install but it is somewhat heavy so you will need to be careful not to drop it on your motherboard. The copper transfers the heat from the cpu very quickly. Highest CPU temp I’ve seen is 49C with an I7-12700kf. Definitely the best functioning cpu cooler I’ve bought. I can’t recommend it enough. My one complaint, is that the connecting wires are supposed to be held along the frame of the fan and then extend to be plugged into the motherboard. Those wires come out of the frame really easily and will be hit by the fan. So if you hear any noise besides a light breeze that’s what it is. Pushing the wires back into the frame does fix it, at least for a while. ... show more

  • Excellent Cooling Performance, Very Quiet (But Large)
Style: Cooler
The Noctua NH-D15 chromax.Black does an outstanding job keeping my AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D cool. Even under load, temperatures stay under control, and the cooler remains very quiet. Build quality is excellent, as expected from Noctua, and installation was straightforward. Once installed, it performs exactly as advertised. The only downside is the size. This cooler is very bulky, which makes working around it inside the case more difficult. In my setup, I need to remove one of the fans in order to access or work on the RAM. That said, I understand that the large size is a big reason why it performs so well. If you have enough case clearance and don’t mind the size, this is an excellent air cooler and easily one of the best available. ... show more

  • Still the King
Style: Cooler
Installed with little issues. Please note due to the size of this thing (it is massive), you may need to uninstall your gpu for ease of installation (I had to do this). however once I had access it was a breeze to install (and this was my first cpu cooler install by myself). Please note if you have taller than normal ram sticks you may need to consider just leaving off the front fan, or you may need to slide it up (but sliding it up means the overall height will be taller so make sure your case can handle the adjusted tolerances). For reference my Corsair 4000d has no issues. I had to slide the front fan up a couple mm but doesn't hit the glass display. Some of the things I like immediately about this cpu cooler: 1. It's huge. Makes my Coolermaster 212 Spectrum V3 look like a midget. 2. Super quiet. I opted for the low noise adapters which limit the fan speed to 1200 rpm (as opposed to 1500). You cannot hear it run unless you really put your ear to the case. 3. Idle temps hover between 35 cel to 41 cel. Gameplay maxes at 71-72 cel. 4. 6 year warranty (holy cow). 5. Chromax Black edition (not a big fan of the creme/brown color) 6. Quality Quality Quality - as a reference my Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE fan clips were such a pain in the butt to install on the heatsink. The Noctua NH-D15 was an absolute breeze. Some things I dislike about this cooler: 1. Price, obviously very expensive vs some other good budget options with similar performance. 2. Having to remove the gpu to complete the install (not a dealbreaker but more annoyance than anything). 3. Not the best looking cooler on the market (BeQuiet! Dark Rock Pro 5 or Elite looks so much better) I had no issue spending the extra money for this as I was looking for both performance but also longevity. 6 years warranty really showed me that Noctua is serious about their products and backs it up. If you can front up the money for this I would say it's a well-worthy investment. My goal was to build a PC setup that could sustain for 5-10 years and I can say with the help of this Noctua DH-15 I will definitely get to that benchmark. ... show more

  • Its HUGE.. and its POWERFUL... AND its Quiet.. Its HUGE.. and its POWERFUL... AND its Quiet..
Style: Cooler
I built my machine about 3 months ago.. but noticed while the NH-9DL did a good job with the i7-9700K. If I wanted to overclock, it got a bit toasty and unstable. So I looked at a AIO, and after seeing LinusTechTips review of the D15 decided to go with it. A few things I wondered and soon found out: #1 - I have 64GB of ram and noticed the D15 was a bit large, but figured give it a try. As you can see it clears the Ram, BUT didn't clear the other heat spreader on the MB.. ( NOCTUA did say that the second fan may not fit.. ) #2 - Although the other fan did not fit exactly where it needed it DID fit in the case about an 1" away from the fins.. and was a big improvement over the original case fan and was close to the intended location. #3 - If curious, YES the original motherboard mount for the NH-9D does work on the new fan so saved me that time and made install even easier. #4 - BONUS the 9D fan with the 15D springs FIT where the 15D Could Not !! So it was like having 3 fans on the cooler ;) #5 - ANOTHER BONUS - They give a number of extension cables for the Fans.. So I was able to mount the fans and get them all power. After doing all that.. I went and got to overclocking.. and stress testing.. I ran Cinebench R20, and custom set it to have 256 render threads to really stress the chip. I then ran them back to back to back until the chip wouldnt get any hotter.. ( an average of 6 times ). As you can see, the results speak for themselves. I went from : 89 degrees C when stress testing it in Default settings... to 64 degrees MAX when stress testing it WHILE IT WAS OVERCLOCKED !! I was MORE stable overclocked.. ! WOW and WOW and WOW.. Noctua hit it out of the park.. As for how loud it is.. it is a LITTLE louder than just the 9D.. but I can't tell you exactly how much as its not a lot. UPDATE: I downloaded OCCT and ran its burnin test, and got to 75C after minutes of maxing everything. The amazing thing is anytime it got off the overclocking settings the CPU dropped back to 35C in a matter of seconds. So unless your both overclocked to 5.1MGZ AND using a LOT of hardcore video or 3D Graphic editing for hours, I think the D15 will keep your system supercool. I personally overclock for gaming, and I DO BIM and 3D Scanning, so I have to process GB size 3D Point clouds, and convert them to Mesh.. THAT does force my CPU to run 100% for a hour to process. BUT even then I never saw higher than 70 and was rock stable the whole time. So I guess what I am saying is custom water cooling MAY do a tad better, but HIGHLY doubt a AIO could do any better at all, and especially not at this cost point and if your upgrading from a Noctua 9 or 12 you can reuse the fans with all the extras that come in the kit here. ... show more

  • Awesome cooler! I'm never going back to liquid AIO Awesome cooler! I'm never going back to liquid AIO
Style: Cooler
My all-in-one cooler failed and I swapped it out with this and the results were absolutely amazing. I didn't even need two fans to keep my CPU at about 68C Max playing Hogwarts in 4K on my i7 8700K CPU. Idle is around 22C. I could put the second fan in but it would protrude and I couldn't get my front glass on with my particular case but luckily it's not needed with my usage. I guess if you're into overclocking and trying to squeeze every ounce out of the CPU you can use the other fan but for my use for 4K gaming it does great. I checked out a few different tests on line and there was about a 1C difference with 2 fans vs 1. And it's surprisingly quiet, especially for how much air the fan pushes. Most importantly, I don't have to worry about this thing failing like all in one coolers. After this experience to me there's just absolutely no reason in my mind to get an AIO cooler other than lights when this thing works so well. I gave up a little bling from the lights but I'm super happy with no more liquid cooler stress. I think it looks awesome. This thing is super high quality and worth every penny. Install was easy and instructions were clear and everything I needed was supplied. I highly recommend. ... show more

  • Overall, the Noctua NH-D15 is an outstanding CPU cooler
Style: Cooler
System Configuration: Processor: Intel i7-14700Kf (undervolted) GPU: MSI RTX 3090 Case: Be Quiet! Tower Case Motherboard: MSI MPG Z690 RAM: Corsair DDR4 RGB (XMP enabled) Ambient Room Temperature: 68°F (20°C) Performance: I've been using the Noctua NH-D15 for a while now, and it has performed admirably under various conditions. Here's a detailed breakdown: Cooling Efficiency: Idle Temperature: The NH-D15 keeps my i7-14700Kf comfortably cool at idle, with temperatures hovering around 38°C. Average Gaming Load: During gaming sessions, the CPU temperature averages around 55°C. This is impressive considering the demanding nature of modern games and the powerful hardware involved. High Load/Rendering: When pushing the system with tasks like shader rendering, there are occasional temperature spikes into the 90-100°C range. While these spikes are somewhat concerning, they are relatively brief and seem to be a common occurrence for such workloads. All Gaming Mode Enabled (with Undervolt 253.0W): With all gaming modes enabled and the CPU undervolted to 253.0W, the cooler maintains excellent performance. The temperatures stay manageable even under extended gaming sessions. Noise Levels: The NH-D15 is remarkably quiet, even under load. The Be Quiet! case complements this, creating a near-silent gaming and working environment. The fans ramp up smoothly and are hardly noticeable even when the system is under stress. Build Quality and Installation: Noctua is known for its exceptional build quality, and the NH-D15 is no exception. The heatsink feels robust, and the fans are high quality. Installation was straightforward, thanks to the clear instructions and included mounting hardware. Compatibility: The NH-D15 fits well in my Be Quiet! tower case, with ample clearance for the MSI RTX 3090 GPU. However, I had to raise the fan slightly due to the Corsair DDR4 RGB RAM. If you're using high-profile RAM like this, it might be worth considering lower-profile modules to ensure optimal airflow and easier installation. Conclusion: Overall, the Noctua NH-D15 is an outstanding CPU cooler that balances performance and noise levels exceptionally well. It manages to keep my i7-14700Kf cool during gaming and general use, with only occasional high-temperature spikes during intensive rendering tasks and shader loading. Given its excellent cooling performance, quiet operation, and solid build quality, I highly recommend the NH-D15 for anyone looking for a top-tier air cooler. Pros: Excellent cooling performance Quiet operation High build quality Easy installation Longevity 6 (years) Cons: Occasional high-temperature spikes under extreme load Slight compatibility issues with high-profile RAM If you're looking for a reliable and efficient air cooler, the Noctua NH-D15 is definitely worth considering. Not a great choice for over clockers i7-14700Kf gets hot AIO for that. ... show more

  • SO MUCH better than the hyped water cool method. Seriously!
Style: Cooler
I bought a ibuypower PC that came with a radiator type cooler. It did a fair to good job of heat control on high end games running a Ryzen 9. After about two years I kept hearing a noise like a fan blade rubbing, but couldn't find just exactly which front fan it was. So changed both. Still made that "crackle". Turns out it was the radiator which now had some air bubbles. Rather go "tapping" and all that to get the air out,I swapped for THIS FAN! When I tell you THIS WAS A GAME CHANGER, (no pun there), it truly is! VERY EASY to install. Clean the CPU,put on the thermal THEY provide. Attach the cooler with the SUPPLIED bracket. Attach both fans using the supplied clamps. Attach the wire pwr leds to the fans. DONE!! This baby is SO QUIET. Seriously quiet!!! All that hype over water cooling, and this is better by far!! I wouldn't steer you wrong, and it won't leak EVER! ... show more
