I purchased the Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black six years ago for a high-end workstation/gaming build. After over half a decade of near-constant operation, I can confidently say this is the best, most reliable, and quietest component in my PC. 1. Performance: Still Chilling After 6 Years When I first installed the D15, I was blown away by the temperatures. Even when overclocking my CPU, it kept temps well below dangerous thresholds. Fast-forward 6 years: I have never had a single thermal issue. The dual-tower, 6-heatpipe design is just as effective today as it was in 2020. The build quality is legendary; the heatsink has not oxidized, and the copper base remains perfectly flat. It regularly keeps my CPU in the 30s-40s°C at idle and keeps things remarkably cool even under heavy rendering loads. The cooling performance rivals many 240mm+ AIO water coolers without the fear of pump failure or leaks. 2. Sound: The Definition of "Silent" My biggest requirement was silence, and Noctua delivered. The two NF-A15 140mm fans are inaudible. I often find myself checking the case window just to make sure the fans are actually spinning because I can't hear them at all, even during intense cpu usage tasks. They use SSO2 bearings, which are incredibly durable and do not grind or hum over time like cheaper alternatives. Even when the fan curve ramps up slightly, it’s a low-frequency hum rather than a high-pitched whine. If you want a silent PC, this is the gold standard. 3. Aesthetics: The "Chromax" Touch The original NH-D15 is infamous for its beige/brown color scheme. The chromax.black version solves this completely. Excellent air cooler and a very good deal for the price. I didn’t use the thermal paste it came with. I bought some NT-H2 separately, but NT-H1 is still good. These are very quiet fans. Almost inaudible. Higher speeds will generate noise, but still quiet. It was easy to install but it is somewhat heavy so you will need to be careful not to drop it on your motherboard. The copper transfers the heat from the cpu very quickly. Highest CPU temp I’ve seen is 49C with an I7-12700kf. Definitely the best functioning cpu cooler I’ve bought. I can’t recommend it enough. My one complaint, is that the connecting wires are supposed to be held along the frame of the fan and then extend to be plugged into the motherboard. Those wires come out of the frame really easily and will be hit by the fan. So if you hear any noise besides a light breeze that’s what it is. Pushing the wires back into the frame does fix it, at least for a while.

The Noctua NH-D15 chromax.Black does an outstanding job keeping my AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D cool. Even under load, temperatures stay under control, and the cooler remains very quiet. Build quality is excellent, as expected from Noctua, and installation was straightforward. Once installed, it performs exactly as advertised. The only downside is the size. This cooler is very bulky, which makes working around it inside the case more difficult. In my setup, I need to remove one of the fans in order to access or work on the RAM. That said, I understand that the large size is a big reason why it performs so well. If you have enough case clearance and don’t mind the size, this is an excellent air cooler and easily one of the best available.

Installed with little issues. Please note due to the size of this thing (it is massive), you may need to uninstall your gpu for ease of installation (I had to do this). however once I had access it was a breeze to install (and this was my first cpu cooler install by myself). Please note if you have taller than normal ram sticks you may need to consider just leaving off the front fan, or you may need to slide it up (but sliding it up means the overall height will be taller so make sure your case can handle the adjusted tolerances). For reference my Corsair 4000d has no issues. I had to slide the front fan up a couple mm but doesn't hit the glass display. Some of the things I like immediately about this cpu cooler: 1. It's huge. Makes my Coolermaster 212 Spectrum V3 look like a midget. 2. Super quiet. I opted for the low noise adapters which limit the fan speed to 1200 rpm (as opposed to 1500). You cannot hear it run unless you really put your ear to the case. 3. Idle temps hover between 35 cel to 41 cel. Gameplay maxes at 71-72 cel. 4. 6 year warranty (holy cow). 5. Chromax Black edition (not a big fan of the creme/brown color) 6. Quality Quality Quality - as a reference my Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE fan clips were such a pain in the butt to install on the heatsink. The Noctua NH-D15 was an absolute breeze. Some things I dislike about this cooler: 1. Price, obviously very expensive vs some other good budget options with similar performance. 2. Having to remove the gpu to complete the install (not a dealbreaker but more annoyance than anything). 3. Not the best looking cooler on the market (BeQuiet! Dark Rock Pro 5 or Elite looks so much better) I had no issue spending the extra money for this as I was looking for both performance but also longevity. 6 years warranty really showed me that Noctua is serious about their products and backs it up. If you can front up the money for this I would say it's a well-worthy investment. My goal was to build a PC setup that could sustain for 5-10 years and I can say with the help of this Noctua DH-15 I will definitely get to that benchmark.

Forget watercooling this does the job well. My 7800x3d doesn't ever, EVER break over 65c. Most of my gaming to include dcs world and star citizen , will only get to 55-60c. Benchmarking stress testing I've seen 65c. As soon as the load on cpu stops the Temps go straight to low 40s in seconds I'd say, and idles at 32-35c in a room that's 75 degrees f. Since I had to raise the fan over the ram the cooler is too tall for my case with isn't a very big case. So I'm just running without the glass panel for now since my x670e taichi by ASRock has tons of cooling on all the components, there's nothing to worry about. But I am going to have to upgrade to the 7000d case to fit it all in. The all black finish looks great, much better then the dog pok brown noctua loves for some ugly reason. There's no reason to risk your components with watercooling with this as an option, I guarantee it. Atleast with a 7800x3d under it. I've had no issues with fans failing g ever with noctua products, this is a premium product and oh the thermal paste that it comes with, is literally the second best and the best is like .5c better tells so there's literally no reason to spend 30 bucks on the only thermal paste better then what this comes with. Easy as pie to install on am5, no previous experience required lol. This cooler is chill as hell, dont think twice about how much a 480mm cooler could cool your cpu, because it would only cool a few degrees better, if it even cools better, because there are plenty of 360 and 480 mm coolers that don't exc3ed the performance of this cooler. It's just big. Buy now.

When I purchased this cooler I had heard Noctua's reputation, and expected a great cooler. What I got shocked me, I was replacing the stock cooler on my Ryzen 5 1600 AE processor. The mounting system is very easy to use and understand. My only complaint is that you have to remove the preinstalled fan before you can mount it. I guess I understand for packaging concerns and I can see that it helps give an example of how to mount fans if you decide to mount the second one. I was making some other upgrades and did a fresh window install. During setup I had to keep checking to make sure the cooler was working, because the fan was so quiet that the white noise floor in my office drowned it out. After setting up windows and downloading core temp, I was pleasantly surprised to see idles in the upper 20's and after stressing the CPU for an hour or so, I still hadn't broken 50 C. After getting setup it was time to see how much overclocking headroom I had with the new cooler. With the stock cooler I was only ever able to push 3.8 GHz at 1.3 volts. I was pretty happy with this sense the general consensus is that it is hard to push past 4.0 GHz on 14nm Zen 1. With the extra cooling power I decided to start low and push high. The results were more than I could have imagined. I was able to reach 3.9 GHz at just 1.2 volts. With only a slight bump in voltage to 1.225 I was able to stabilize 4.0. Having reached the theoretical maximum of Zen 1 I resigned myself to pushing after 4.1 and inevitably failing. To my utter amazement I was able to hit 4.1 at 1.3 volts. So, naturally, I went for broke and went for 4.2. I was able to get 4.2 stable enough to boot and run a few benchmarks at 1.375 volts, but it was not stable enough to run for daily use, so I pulled the clocks down and "settled" for a 4.15 GHz at 1.375 volts. Obviously if you're trying this at home your mileage may vary. For reference I'm using a 1600 AE (14nm Zen 1) on an Asus X370 pro board and a Seasonic focus gx psu. Temps are much more toasty then at stock, peaking in the 70's and idling in the upper 30's, but with this 3.15 MHz bump over stock I am very happy with this cooler, and the added benefit is that my next CPU will get to benefit from this coolers domineering performance. I also think it's worth pointing out that even under the higher temps and the fan picking up in speed, I still can't hear it over the other noise in my office. I wonder if writing this review will ultimately have any affect since Noctua already has a very good standing in the PC audience, but I was so blown away by this product that I felt compelled to rave about it.

So, people say this cooler can beat water cooling, which makes me wonder about a few things. I've never water cooled before, and would rather avoid it because it's just too much hassle and too much risk to mix water and expensive electronics. My previous cooler was an Artic Freezer Xtreme Dual Tower. This particular cooler has only 1 fan (120mm). I experimented a bit with it by adding a Noctua PWM fan that could spool up to 3k RPM just to see if it helped, and it did, but not by a huge amount. Mainly, it was extremely noisy. I've been messing around with folding @ home, and I've been running it on my GPUs only since they are at least quieter in the sense that they'll thermal throttle and spool the fans up to maybe 1500-2000 RPM, which is plenty enough to keep the cards from burning up. Running the GPUs that hot makes me nervous, but that's another issue. When I finally got the Noctua cooler, I went to town and installed it. The mounting brackets for it are MUCH better than the Artic Freezer. With the freezer, you had to literally bend the tabs back, or else when you got the cooler screwed down, it wouldn't have any pressure against the CPU and you'd have no cooling. The Noctua replaces the stock AM4 clips with it's own clips, and instead uses two spring loaded screws to push the cooler against the heatsink. Then you just clip the fan back on and go. The way that the Ryzen 9 3900x behaves with this cooler is a bit ... strange. AMD has clearly not put any effort into measuring exactly how much heat these processors dissipate. The NH-15 is clearly capable, but if your running F@H or any other CPU intensive application, you'll have to watch your temps. You definitely will if you OC. At first, I thought there was a problem with the cooler, but it quickly dawned on me that I didn't use enough thermal grease. The NH-15 comes with NT-H1 which is Noctua's own brand of thermal grease. It seems to work well. I added a good bit this time. Keep in mind, the NT-H1 is not conductive, so, although you might be concerned if you add too much and make a mess, at least you won't short out your mobo or CPU. Seriously though, it takes a fair amount of grease, but not the whole tube. Like the Freezer Pro you do have to take the center fan out to access the two screws that hold the heatsink on the brackets. It's a fairly easy process. You can use the second fan on either side of the cooler, depending upon space in your case. Just make sure both fans are blowing in the same direction ;) After I added more grease, once the Ryzen Master stress test completes, the temps jump from ~75C to about ~42C nearly instantly. So, the cooler IS working, it's just that there seems to be some sort of trick with the thermal grease. I'd like to try kryonaut next and see if it makes any difference. The 3900x just plain runs HOT.

This thing is big for sure. You look at photos on Amazon but cannot truly get a feel for the size until holding it in your hand. It had everything you needed in the box for either AMD or Intel builds which was great. The instructions were very detailed and clear and guided you step by step and the bags were label appropriately to discern Intel vs AMD parts. All fit very well on my ASUS Z790 Gaming motherboard cooling an I9-14900K. Slapped on the MX-4 and dropped on the cooler and this thing idles in the upper 30's and under load of video encoding saw the upper 60's. and could barely hear the fans as they spun up slightly. This thing is quiet for sure and built like a tank. It is performing much better than expected and is on the pricey side but you get what you pay for. The most important thing to know is that you will need a good 7 inches from the base of your motherboard to the top of the second fan to fit in your case. The other thing to know is that it is not compatible with higher profile ram if you want to use the second fan. So do your checks of your gear first before purchasing or plan on replacing the ram or the case as needed. This is a pricey cooler but it is worth every dollar in cooling performance and easy of installation due to included hardware and screws.
