I read the mixed reviews on this safe, and I admit to being a little nervous when I ordered it. Weighing in at 66lbs, it isn't exactly something I'd want to try to ship back if I didn't like it. I'm pleased to say that I couldn't be happier with the purchase. The unit arrived in excellent condition, I did not see any signs of rust, dents, or other damage that were mentioned in some of the older reviews, and best of all the keys were outside the cabinet so no issues getting it set up & programmed. The other reviews are correct, this unit is quite tipsy before you mount it - to the point that we had a bit of difficulty setting testing out the location. But that is not a big deal & is to be expected on a compact unit like this. I did invest quite a bit of time & money "dressing it up", following some recommendations by another reviewer & going off on my own a bit. I lined the inside with gray, adhesive-backed carpet squares from our local home improvement center to protect the firearms from metal-on-metal contact. Some have loosened up a bit, so with the benefit of hindsight I'd have hit them with some spray adhesive instead of relying solely on the adhesive from the squares. Some other helpful items: * Magnetic, battery powered LED light with motion sensor, Sylvania Part Number 72245. Hang it on the underside of the shelf with the magnetic mount, it turns on automatically when the door is opened. * Eva Dry E-500 Wireless Dehumidifier. Fits on the top shelf; absorbs humidity. When it gets saturated you can plug it in to 'recharge' it. In retrospect I probably should have bought the unit that is one-size smaller as this one barely fits & takes up a lot of room in the safe. * Rack'Em 3 Pistol Holster In-Safe Handgun Rack #6020 - Allows you to hang some larger handguns in the safe if you're not using all the space for rifles This is a small safe, however by using some creativity & accessories I was able to store 3 rifles & 3 hand guns inside with no troubles. One shotgun was a tall as the entire safe so it had to set sidewise in front of the shelf. But no harm done. I can see where pistol grips, scopes, and other add-ons would challenge the space. The reviewers that observed this is more of a locker & less of a safe are also correct. It's a great choice for keeping guns safe from kids. It'll slow down a thief, probably won't help much in a fire. The biometric works great; I took several scans of several fingers (it'll store up to 120 impressions) and have had no problems with access. In summary this is a great choice for the average person who wants to keep their firearms organized & protect their family from accidents. If you're a collector or have a larger collection you probably need something a little more elaborate. ... show more

Great Safe but...

To start, I have mixed feelings about this safe. Overall, though, the positives outweigh the negatives. The Good: 1. Biometric feature works flawlessly. It was easy to program and it recognizes my fingerprint every time. 2. It has a silent feature so you can access the safe discretely if there is an intruder in your home. 3. Has a shelf to also store a pistol. 4. Great concept for a nice little home defence safe. The concept is not to store many firearms or keep them safe from fire. The concept is to have a small locker mounted in an easily accessable location in case of emergency (intruder). The Bad: 1. Do not expect this safe to hold more than 1-2 long guns. It is advertised as a 4 gun safe, but will only comfortably hold 1-2 long guns and a pistol depending on the model. My AR-15 carbine with optics will not fit in this safe loaded with a 30 round magazine. In order to store the gun loaded, I have to settle for a 20 round magazine (hopefully you won't need 20 rounds if you are in the situation where you need to defend yourself). So if you own an AR-15, expect that this will be the only firearm that will fit along with a pistol. An extra 2" in depth and 1" in the door opening would make a huge difference. 2. You will have to mount this safe to a wall or a floor. The safe will fall over when you open the door if not mounted (you should mount it anyway because somebody could easily walk out your door with a safe this size). Overall, this safe does what I need it to do. It stores 1 long gun and 1 pistol for home defense if needed. I would love for it to be able to hold my AR-15 with a full 30 round magazine but that is a minor gripe. I thought about sending this unit back for that reason, but overall, it is a bargain. Update: 5/11/2020 - I elected to line the inside of the safe with speaker carpeting. Absolutely LOVE the way it looks and the additional protection that my guns get from nicks and scratches. The carpeting also allows me to install Velcro adds like the holster that is now housing my Glock 17 on the inside right wall. This frees up the shelf for ammo and clips. This product has been really performed well. I purchased an additional shelf that I plan to use for more accessories and ammo. I also purchased some motion sensing LED lighting that I'll install on the inside wall. Great product so far. Functional and slim. Two thumbs up!! -------------------------------------------------- The safe arrived today in excellent condition. I was impressed with the packaging. Everything protected by Styrofoam and sealed in a heavy duty cardboard box. No scratches or dents despite being a heavy piece of gear. Once I got it out of the box, programming was pretty straight forward. I did have to create about 20 different fingerprints to get it to respond quickly, but we are rocking now. Not as quick as iPhone print recognition, but not bad. I’m storing a Glock G17, 9mm and a Mossberg 12 Gauge with ammo and clips. The Glock fits nicely on the top shelf with 3 boxes of ammo. Can’t really fit another gun in the top shelf. The shotgun fits great with room to spare for 3 more, should I elect to add to the collection. Overall, I’m really pleased with this safe. I bought it to dissuade curious little hands from touching dangerous objects. It will get that job done and allow quick access for me and my wife for home security if needed. Very Satisfied

I received mine today and just finished bolting it to the wall. My thoughts: Setup - Very easy. All parts and instructions were there and it was simple to register the prints. Size - I'm not a hunter, gun collector, or paranoid militia nutbag so I only needed something to hold a shotgun and a pistol that I keep for self defense. This holds them comfortably. Shotgun is Mossberg 500 w/ no add-ons & pistol is Ruger LCR. If I had more or larger guns, I would have bought a larger safe. Sturdy - I was worried it might be a bit too much like the quality of a locking file cabinet but it is a strong, solid safe. Yes, if someone breaks in when I'm not home with an assortment of tools or a blow torch or dynamite they'll probably get in. If they're that determined and are willing to take the risk that I don't come home and walk up behind them with the pistol, then they get to win that round. Reliability - I took another reviewer's advice and put my same finger prints in several different ways. I found that when I try to open it in a hurry, I tend to not put my finger in as far, so I recorded them that way also. Even before I did it multiple ways, it worked reliably. It's opened by first pushing a button to activate the reader, then holding your finger on the reader and waiting for the confirmation beep. It takes about 3 seconds for me to open from the time I push the button until the door is open so if I see my daughter's date pull in the driveway and he looks like a punk, I'll have plenty of time to be casually cleaning my guns in the background before he gets to the door. Stability - You do have to bolt it to the wall or floor, or at least to a piece of 2x12 on the bottom that would have to protrude in the front for when the door is open. Overall - The safe does exactly what I need for a good price. Unless it self destructs in a week, I don't have any complaints. ... show more

Great Biometric Feature!!! Craftsmanship Not Impressive.

I was amazed by the price of this safe. A $600 safe for mid-$200's. I was attracted to this safe because my 9MM was long overdue for being secured, and now that I have a growing child in the household, it was imperative to have the handgun secured. An additional desire was to have quick, secure access for myself and my girlfriend in case of home invasion. Additionally, I never wanted to store a loaded weapon in the house, unless it was fully secured. Plus, it has some good room for valuables such as digital cameras and jewelry. It DOES fit my 15" Macbook, diagonally. All that being said, let me tell you that the biometric feature works as advertised and flawlessly. The fingers that my girlfriend and I have entered work every time, easily. And other fingers do NOT work. Upon reading other reviews, I think I will have us program multiple fingers just in case the sensor decides to be fidgity. I have also read some reviews complaining about the programming.... my only advice for that is that you read the instructions carefully. It's actually a lot easier then I thought it'd be. While I'm impressed with the biometric feature, and happy with the locking mechanisms, I'm not very happy with the overal build and finishing qualities of this safe. This safe is Made in China, and unfortunately it shows. The exterior is of nice finish, and painted well. Except, there was a small spot on the top that seemed like it was "welding spatter" which was painted over with the black paint. It's not the end of the world, but it's definitely not cosmetically appealing when looking at closely. Additionally, I wish the safe included some leveling feet or maybe some pads on each corner. On the hardwood floors I unopened the box on, the safe wobbled. Upon closer evaluation, it appears that the bottom of the safe may not be fully level. It's as if the steel was depressed slightly by a mm or two on one corner. It won't really matter once I have it secured to a wall or floor, however, once again a poor indication of build quality. Lastly, the inside of the safe was the least impressive area. The black paint was horribly inconsistent inside. Some areas were more lightly dusted with black paint then others, and drip marks were evident. And the included shelf had screws that had loosened and fallen to the bottom. Finally, I should mention that I received a replacement safe, as the first one arrived with a large scratch/scuff down to the metal on the top corner. There's a high potential that it could have incurred the damage prior to shipping, because the box was intact, and the styrofoam was undamaged on the corners. That doesn't sit well with me knowing that the Chinese manufactures overlooked the defect and shipped it anyway. However, it could have potentionally happened in shipping too.... which was a disappointment, being a day late (Amazon Prime 2-Day), and having incurred a large gash in the box along the full length of the box. Overall, the safe will deter theft of my valuables and firearm. The biometric works great! It's a good shape and size. Remember, this is NOT a fire safe and it's not as thick and protective as more traditional safes. This is primarily meant to secure firearms. For $260-ish, it's still a good value. ... show more

Dangerous product and now ghosted by customer service.

I have owned this safe since 2018. (Barska AX11652) I purchased it for a quick access bedroom safe. I thought I was doing the right thing to keep my family safe. The biometric function provides easy, quick access as promised. I had been perfectly happy with the purchase until recently. I have two children ages 7 and 9. One evening, my 9 year old son was standing in my bedroom when I placed a pistol in the safe. I don't even think he had noticed the safe until then because it was tucked away behind an open door with a bath robe hanging above it. (Sneaky... which is a reason I chose this model.) He said "Wait, did you just open that safe with your fingerprint?" I told him that it would only open if the fingerprint was mine or his mother's. He was very impressed and asked if he could try. I said sure, since I saw no harm in it. He pushed the button, set his index finger on the pad and BEEP, the door unlocked. Surely that must have been a one in a trillion, right? Nope. My 9 year old's fingerprints open this safe. I've since pulled the batteries and followed the instructions on resetting the memory. This time I only saved my index finger and thumb. Same result. His fingerprint does not unlock my phone, so I know we don't have freaky, super similar fingerprints. I emailed Barska customer service directly about the issue on 5/17/21. It is now 6/29/21 and still zero response. I've concluded that the biometric technology is either a joke or I received a faulty unit. Either way, Barska couldn't care less if your kids can access your firearms since they won't even acknowledge the issue. Now, this safe is less than useless to me. If I leave it as-is, I put my family at risk. If I disable the biometric system, I'll be fumbling with a key while an intruder wanders around my home doing what they please. You had your chance, Barska. I'm out. I'll soon be shopping for another brand. This time I'll research a bit better first. I suggest you do the same. ... show more

Pefect solution for 4 guns and a pistol.

I have pondered getting a gun safe for several years, but had not purchased one. After a recent purchase of a hand gun, I felt compelled to find a secure manor to store my guns. I have 3 rifles, two with scopes, a 20 gauge shotgun and a full size colt 1911 government. Though small, I am able to get all the guns in the safe. It is not well suited for rifles with scopes, so it takes careful arraignment. I keep my 1911, extra magazines, and some other odds and ends on the top shelf. The biometric lock works perfectly. I really like the hidden key access which adds a little extra security. I keep the emergency keys in another safe. The one down side is the mounting hardware. What is shipped would be great if I were building a new house, but not very practical for an existing sheetrock wall. I ended up mounting 2 1 x 4's to span the studs and then mounting the safe to them. A little work with the router and some paint and my wife was only a little mad. Bottom line, I can now keep my 1911 loaded and locked in the safe. The biometric access provides extremely fast access without the need to have a loaded weapon in the top drawer of the night stand, a potential risk to my teenage children and many friends who visit our home, and a potential risk to one self if an intruder were to gain access before you could wake, or gain access. I know many will argue the wisdom of this, but it works for me. ... show more

Small, but energy efficient

Ok, first and foremost, this thing is thin. it has trouble with any rifle with a mag well or a scope. I was able to fit two in, but that was juggling things around and putting them on the diagonals. the top shelf can hold two pistols if you maneuver them right, or three if you stack them. Forget the ammo or extra mags. it works well for a closet unit just to hold a few item you might need quick, but that' about it. On the good side, i love the bio-metric lock. I don't have to find a key, or dial a combination in the middle of the night, in the dark. It works great for a rapid access if needed, I just wish it had a bit more space. the other amazing thing about the lock: the batteries seem to last forever. I think I've changed them a about every seven years, but that didn't mean the old ones had died, I just decided it was time. It isn't like I never use the safe, either. it contains my EDC when not in use, so I'm opening it at least twice a day. So, awesome lock, but low capacity. ... show more
