    • Good kid's microscope, but has a few annoyances

The images this microscope produces are passable at low magnification. As far as I can tell, it uses a digital zoom, so you're limited by the resolution of the sensor. The illuminator works well, and they provide a few sample slides. The microscope is powered by a rechargeable battery (USB-C port). Overall, I think it makes a good gift for a kid --- especially since, unlike other digital microscopes I've tested --- it includes its own display. My main quibbles are (1) there doesn't seem to be a way to turn the button-press beeps off, (2) the symbols on the buttons are virtually impossible to read, and (3) the zoom in/out buttons don't have key-repeat (i.e. you can't press and hold them to zoom in/out more or less, but must repeatedly press them). ... show more

This portable microscope is simply amazing! We got is as a gift for my soon to be 10 year old daughter and unboxed ahead of time to test it out and make sure it is as good as we were hoping it would be. Immediately my husband said he wanted one for himself, LOL! Our daughter is really into science and this device is sure able to impress a budding scientist. We previously checked out a $200 microscope from our local library and it was a lot harder to use, not really any stronger in magnification and obviously not at all portable. Here is the scoop on all the amazing features of Barchrons Microscope for Kids. What we love: 1. It is small and portable, lightweight and just the right size for the young hands. 2. Microscope and telescope features in one - a perfect item to bring along on one of our future mountain hikes. 3. Ability to take photos and videos is both useful and fun for kids - they get to both be able to recollect their awesome findings and experience the thrill of this advanced functionality. 4. Rechargeable battery - great! 5. Strong magnification up to x1000 - super impressive. 6. Neat and sturdy, giftable packaging. 7. Six study samples are included to get your young scientist exploring right out of the box. 8. Illuminator light on the object in focus is very helpful and just like on an a stationary microscope. What could be improved: 1. The device has a built in hand strap but we really wish there was a neck strap as well so that it could be safely suspended and not dropped or lost while not in use. This microscope is an amazing piece of technology for the price, and kids love it! It's easy to use, once you get the hang of the controls. The resulting images easily exceed the best we could get in college biology labs a few years ago. The included light source works great and contributes to the image quality. (I maxes out at 1000X, but this appears to be from digital zoom so quality suffers are higher magnifications. However, I find this is very acceptable for a child's microscope. We were unable to test out the telescopic function due to weather.) My seven-year-old granddaughter found the microscope fascinating and immediately went around the house investigating the intricate details of things she hadn't previously seen close-up. I was tempted to deduct a star from the rating due to the lack of a charger, but let it go because of the otherwise excellent quality of this unit and an extraordinary price. You would want to be careful purchasing a charger, making sure to get a 1A version. Requirements are in the instructions. I purchased one on-line for about 6 bucks. ... show more

I got this for my grandson at Christmas. It worked like a charm right out of the box. He is five, and was very excited looking at things in the room. It looks a lot like a small video camera and works the same way. The only drawback is that it goes in and out of focus unless you hold it absolutely still - which is a little hard for a young person. But you can turn on the light, set it to focus right at the end of the lens area, and tell the child to just hold it against whatever they are looking at - that solves the problem. It's colorful and reasonably well constructed. I'm sure it will last a long time. I think given the price and the versatility, it's a very good value. ... show more
