I'm not usually the type to write reviews...but this one earned it. I took this with me on a 10 mile run last weekend expecting the usual gooey, extra sweet and something I just tolerate. Instead...it tasted like someone mashed up a real banana and gave it superpowers. No synthetic weirdness. No sludge. Just smooth, real flavor that actually felt good going down and after? real good energy. Not the rocket fuel then crash kind. More like a quiet engine humming in the background, keeping me moving without the stomach drama (Runners know what I mean). It's rare when something this simple feels like a cheat code. These energy gel packs do exactly what they’re meant to do. They provide quick fuel for workouts in convenient, easy to carry packets. Since the main ingredient here is real banana puree, I expected a more enjoyable banana flavor than what it actually tastes like. The taste isn’t bad by any means, but it’s quite concentrated and strong, and doesn’t really taste like a banana to me. Interestingly, the gel is red in color and has a texture similar to a strawberry smoothie, which again, isn’t really a bad thing, just different from what I expected. Each 42g packet has 12g of natural sugar content. That may seem high, but it’s there to deliver fast energy that’s meant to be burned off during workout. I took one just before a rowing session, and I can definitely see how these would be especially helpful during longer endurance workouts when I need to refuel quickly in the middle of a workout. They’re compact enough to carry several in a pocket without adding much bulk, and since I don't have to chew anything, each packet takes just a few seconds to consume. I also like that, unlike many popular energy drinks that are loaded with caffeine and artificial ingredients, these are all natural ingredients aside from some minimal amount of preservatives.

The VitalFuel Banana Energy Gel packs have an easy tear top held on by an attached strip that folds down so it's not in the way. The gel is soft and creamy with a tangy banana flavor. The flavor has a strong ripe banana taste with a bit of banana peel sharpness . The color is a reddish brown that looks a lot like machinery grease. There is very little scent. The gel packs do not require refrigeration, and I do not recommend it. The cold amplifies the flavor which is already strong. I like them better warm. Overall they are okay, but I don't notice much of an energy boost and prefer a fresh banana.

These gels are good for use during a long hike or maybe a day at the beach/lake when you don't want to stop (or leave) to eat. They are very easy to open and use (just squeeze). Not intended or recommended for a normal snack as it is basically a shot of sugar, but it will hit you quickly when needed. This banana flavored energy gel helped me through a tough hike when I was feeling low on fuel was hours away from eating a meal.
