  • A very capable unit
I purchased this unit for my 70 year old mother. She has gotten to elderly to handle mowing her orchard herself. I set this unit up for a challenge. It handled it with ease. My mom loved seeing the robot mowing and bouncing around under her trees for her. I placed and secured 12" boxes around each tree. The robot bounces around between them. Set on a 4 hour run time 4 days a week it kept the area mowed well . This is approxamately 1/2 an acre with 40 trees on it. It only stopped once in the field all season. A few weeks after initial setup. It tried to return home to charge but didnt make it. It got caught up between a post and the boundry wire. After a small adjustment to the boundry it worked flawlessly the rest of the season. Just needed to keep an eye out at harvest season. It started shaving fallen apples. Overall a very capable unit. I never did get the app to work. ... show more

  • Better than Landroid
Size: 1/3 Acre
After owning a Landroid for three years I decided to set up a mower for my front yard. At first I tested by hauling the Landroid between yards to see how it would do. The Worx unit I own is a three wheel model and gets stuck two to three times a day in the back yard, but the front yard is flatter so I thought it would be fine. Nope. It still found a way to get stuck just as often. Wanting to try a four wheel version I gave the AYI unit a try. It has only gotten stuck once in two months, and that was due to a hole gouged during a heavy rain. I believe the four wheels help it out. It also has a larger cutting area than the Landroid and really gets the job done quickly. Overall, both units do a good job but the AYI performs slightly better. The grass appears more uniform and it seems to cut better in longer grass (like after a couple days of rain). A con against it is the charging base. The way it’s designed, the unit pulls directly in as opposed to the side parking of the Landroid. It also does not cut close to the base, so you’ll have high grass around the charging unit that will need to be edged. Or you could create a mini patio area for the base by sinking some bricks into the ground. The app is average as are the notifications. Wire installation was the same as any other robot mower. I have learned however, to use an edger to make a shallow trench to lay your wire. Doing that leads to less wire snips by the unit in a new area. It doesn’t need to be very deep and the grass will grow over it quickly. The construction is very durable and as mentioned, I believe the four wheel caster system out performs the tricycle gear of my version of the Landroid (Worx does make a four wheel caster mower as well, but at a higher price point). I also like the handle in the back of the ATI when picking up the unit for movement and cleaning. The Worx unit I have is a very good mower; however IMO, the AYI edges it out ever so slightly in mowing efficiency. I also tested the AYI in the rougher back yard. It never got stuck while the Worx unit had stoppages two to three times a day. The one area AYI beats all comers by far is in price. It is a great, well built unit offering a lot of bang for the buck. I recommend this unit over the ‘droid. At least over the version of the Landroid that I own. Should I need another unit, I would buy an AYI again. ... show more

  • Not for St.Augustine grass
For the price, this is a great deal. I would loved to have kept it but it struggles with the thick St. Augustine grass. With the cutting height set to the highest level, it's body still pushes into the grass and constantly stops/turns. The app is OK. If I had a fescue grass yard, this mower is a no-brainer. It handled the slope in my yard well. Setup and install was easy. I liked the extra 50 meters of wire too. I ended up buying the Worx Landroix S. With the Landroid cutting setting in the middle of the height setting it just powered through the grass. It's also a little faster then the AYI. Kind of surprised me. The app was about the same but the internet connection for some reason was more challenging and the doc was poor if you had a connectivity issue. ... show more

  • Quite impressed so far!
I must admit, I was a bit skeptical at first; but it was on sale and as a single parent, I’m very short on time. Spending 2 nights a week mowing the lawn over the summer takes a lot of time away from spending it with my kids; so I thought what the heck, at this price point, why not try it? I realize it doesn’t have some of the functions (like gps and a cell signal) like the fancy several thousand plus dollar mowers, but I live in a rather low crime area and I’m not worried much about it being stolen. And, as I discovered, it won’t work outside the boundary loop… unless you’ve accidentally switched the wires in the back of the base.. not that I did that or anything.. nope. Ok so it was a bit of a learning curve! I also discovered that you need to either bury the wire or have it reeeealllly tight to the ground, or it’ll get sliced right off. Tip for burying the boundary wire: use an edger on trench mode. You can just cruise right along and it makes a perfectly uniform cut through your lawn. Also tip: don’t try and use said edger to cut through tree roots. You’ll end up burning up the motor and having to get a new one on Facebook marketplace so you can finish your project. But once I got everything in, my robot would keep stopping and giving me hardware errors. I contacted customer service, (shout out to Hailey) and they were great! We worked back and forth to troubleshoot, and they ended up sending me a replacement one. I named him Lester II, and he works fantastic! Just goes about his business, and when he needs a recharge, he does that, and then goes back out. I was even skeptical of the random pattern.. but he covered everything. I definitely see this becoming something everyone has in the future! ... show more

  • Update: Excellent customer service
Had an issue with it not running anymore, but the excellent customer service/support has reconciled the situation. Prior to the recent problems, the mower was a funny and effective purchase. The backyard was nice and evenly cut which was nice. I had it set on a schedule and didn't have to worry about it at all. It has similar problems to a Roomba type device but as long as you keep the yard picked up and free of anything it can get hung up on there shouldn't be any problem. ... show more
