  • Very capable RC off-roader ready for fun straight out of the box
Color: Blue
I'm new to the RC crawler hobby. All my prior RC toys have been child grade. While I am comfortable wrenching on real cars, I wanted to get started with something ready to run instead of putting together a kit. The UTB18 Capra is a great starter hobby grade crawler. It comes in 3 different varieties, with this being the latest and most extensively equipped model. The prior versions of the UTB18 were 2 wheel drive or 4 whee drive, but with 2 wheel steering. Those versions can still be purchased at an even lower entry level price. They're also probably better suited for people looking to build competition setups. This 4 wheel drive 4 wheel steering model however is an absolute sweet spot if you were planning on convering a 2WS model to 4WS. It's cheaper to buy this than to modify a 2WS UTB18. The steering is greatly enhanced with the 4WS capability. It's a pretty well built RTR (Ready to Run) model, despite having a whole lot of plastic everywhere. In order to reach this retail pricepoint I can see where sacrifices were made. None of that deters from the value provided by this particular model as it works just fine out of the box. It could probably withstand a good amount of crawling in stock form before your hand is forced to start upgrading parts. The thing you will absolutely need to buy for this crawler are extra batteries. The OEM battery is barely good for 25-30 minutes of low speed crawling before it croaks. I suspect the light bar eats up a lot of energy and I will likely unplug it, judging by all the heat it generates after just a few minutes of it being on. The size of this 1/18 capra appears to be deceiving. It's larger than most other 1/18 scale models and appears to be closer to 1/14 actual size. That's not exactly a deterring factor at all, because the size actually looks and feels great. There are many modifications available and the support for this UTB18 platform continues to grow. I look forward to putting more miles on it and exploring the limits prior to diving into extensive modifications like adding weight, changing out the brushed motor to brushless, swapping in metal gears in the gearbox and the portals, exploring overdrive and underdrive gearing changes, servo horns and suspension/wheel/tire upgrades. As it comes out of the box it's a ton of fun and very capable. I highly recommend this model as an intro to RC scale crawling. ... show more

  • Great trail rig, but not a crawler without many upgrades
Color: Yellow
Great little rig, lots of aftermarket support. Fully functional out of the box as a trail rig, but not a crawler by any means. Included photo is what I have done to it to be an actual LCG crawler.

  • Battery issues not powering up/charging
Color: Yellow
Axial Batteries are dead in the box, the reason why I returned my first one. Got a replacement from Amazon and tried it as well it wouldn’t charge, this time before returning it to Amazon I went with the battery to a hobby shop and had them check the battery health it was totally dead/drained. He hooked it to his bench charger to get some charge back into it and it then worked on a stock charger normally after that. So if your battery won’t take a charge I’d look into a bigger charger that would work or go visit a hobby shop before returning it and waiting for a replacement unit that does the same thing. ... show more

  • 4 wheels steer is a game changer and one that you'll find you need
Color: Blue
Probably could have retrofitted a rear turning set-up on the back of my UTB-18 4WD that I've been running for a few years now. I've made almost every upgrade that you can think of on that rig over time so I didn't feel the need to tear it down again since a 4 wheel steer unit was on this new rock crawler. And besides, it gives me the chance to upgrade things a little differently this time around. You know RC people are famous for never being satisfied with a rigs performance right out of the kit or box. They shouldn't be called RTR cars (ready to run), they should be called RTU (ready to upgrade). Any, yes the Capra comes with everything you need to get it running. The charger you get with this is meant for a USB recharge that will do the job but will also take its time to do it. The radio is their standard model that simple so newbies won't be intimidated by it. Reading the manual explains what all the controls will do. There's also a rocker switch that moves you through all steering possibilities of which there are 3. The first is turning front wheels only. That's the norm for most cars. Then there's a setting that turns the front wheels one way the rear wheels the other way. That's for making tighter turns. Finally, there's a setting for the front wheels to turn one way and the rear wheels to turn the same way. That produces what is known as crab walking (if you've ever seen how a crab moves across the sand). Traversing a rocky surface with the ability to control wheel movements is a major plus but takes some getting used to. The fun factor for a 4WS is many times greater when compared to the 4WD version. I got this rig when it went on a very brief sale, so the price was well worth it. ... show more

  • Mountain Goat
Color: Yellow
It is an awesome truck. I've run it about 15 times, and every time I take it out it puts a smile on my face. I run it at a place nearby my house where a lot of guys with competitive crawlers are running. An old guy with a truck full of expensive comp crawlers shared with me a few things that made it much more capable: 1. Make limit straps using rubber bands or zip ties to hold the front end down. When you're going up steep climbs the front end suspension unloads and it flips over. By limiting shock travel in the front, The weight stays closer to the ground and it doesn't flip. 2. Cut the foams in the tires so that the they will flex and conform to the ground. The tires are very soft and grippy, but the firm foams make it seem like they aren't. I ended up replacing the foams with silicone inserts and cutting off the outer ring of the inserts to give more tire compliance. 3. Install heavy brass portal covers in the front. With improved grip from the tires, it will now flip over easily, so weight must be added to the front end. For a budget solution, you can use stick on lead weights or attach fishing sinkers. After these three modifications, my Mini Capra became a mountain goat! ... show more
