Surprisingly good machine but poorly documented
Style: TIG180
You can turn any cheap inverter stick-welder into a very basic TIG welding machine by adding a TIG torch that can also connect directly to your shielding gas source. I’ve used exactly that set-up myself, and it works OK. Here, however, we have a fully-featured TIG machine that does much more, much better, for about the same cost. Instead of controlling gas flow manually with a knob on the torch, the machine controls it via an internal solenoid (valve) that not only saves gas by being selective about when to let it flow, but also supports user-specified “pre-flow” and “post-flow” intervals that allow you to shield your work with gas before and after actually running an arc. Sweet! And instead of starting an arc by touching the electrode to the work (“lift-TIG”) as usually required in the stick-welder-plus-TIG-torch scenario, a variable-position thumb-switch on this machine’s torch lets you control the arc, and even its amperage, from the torch. That is, you can get everything positioned properly with the electrode hovering over the start-point, and begin the arc by pressing the thumb-switch. This is functionally equivalent to using a foot-pedal arc controller. I confess I much prefer the latter, especially when it comes to making adjustments to arc amperage on the fly; I find myself using the thumb-switch strictly in the “full on” or “off” positions. But this is probably just a matter of practicing. It’s worth noting that the torch that comes with this kit is nearly identical to the “add-on” torch I mentioned earlier: it has a (redundant) gas control knob that in this context needs to be all the way open when welding, since the machine provides automated gas flow control. The thumb-switch on this torch, and its cable/connector, is attached via cable ties. In other words, the amperage control wasn’t originally built in to the torch, it was added to it. This probably doesn’t matter. In fact, it may make it simpler and more economical to swap out the thumb-switch later if it breaks. The main reason I mention the “sort of jury-rigged” nature of the torch is so you know about that redundant gas-valve. Which brings us to the manual, which doesn’t say much of anything about using the torch. Its instructions on set up are, I guess, adequate. But where configuration settings and machine usage are concerned, parts of the manual are confusing, and others contradictory. For example, button “c” (bottom button on the left side of the screen). Is for saving and loading configurations. Given how granular these settings are (yay!) this is an important feature. Except, the functions controlled by button C are called “Save” and “Record,” which are synonyms! Worse, the text fails to make it clear which of these functions writes the current configuration to memory, and which one loads a previously-saved configuration. Of course I can figure this out via trial and error, but I shouldn’t have to. Generally, the manual neglects to describe the many TIG and stick-welding features the machine supports, and the parameters associated with each; mostly it just calls them out by name. If you’re already an experienced TIG welder, this probably doesn’t matter. Similarly, the manual lacks the customary tables on gas-flow and amperage-settings that inform your choices of settings. Again, not an issue for experts. However, the target market for this machine surely includes a lot of people who want to try TIG welding for the first time inexpensively, before investing ten times as much money (or more) on a higher-end machine. AWT would therefore do well to provide a more comprehensive and clearly-written manual. In summary, ifyou’re experienced with TIG, this may be just the back-up or home-use machine for you (though I have no idea how reliable or durable it will be over time). If you’re new to TIG welding, I still recommend it. Just be forewarned that you’ll need to do some research and reading on the side to make the most of it. Note: I tested this machine using 100% argon set to 25 cfm, to weld together some pieces of 3/16 square mild steel rod at 90 amps (max), via 120v (house current). I was impressed by the machine’s output power: it’s definitely a cut above other inexpensive inverter welders I’ve used. I haven’t tried stick welding with it yet, but that’s the easy part. ;-) I’m interested to try the “hot start” feature; if that doesn’t deliver, I’ll update this review.

Beyond my wildest expectation

This thing is amazing. Now I'm no professional welder. I know just enough to do my small projects and mainly to get myself in trouble. I've wanted to try tig welding for a while now, and this was my opportunity. I was blown away! I've read some of the other reviews and they are so true and spot on. The screen and readouts give you a lot of information. To be able to hook this up to gas and have it regulate itself is wonderful. To be able to use sticks as well as a feed? Like what? Are you kidding? And at the price point this thing is at? Unbelievable! The one thing I've done for sure since getting this has been to sign up for classes so I can utilize everything this can do. The value for the money is so worth it. What are you waiting for?!

A cheap TIG welder that actually works good? I’m highly skeptical!

This is an AWT branded, “welding machine interverter” That’s what the box says! OK then. Moving on. I’m just going to call it a TIG welder. I thought about doing a practical use video review, but I don’t wanna be judged on my welding skills or quality, or do a bunch of retakes to show a good weld. My grandfather was a master welder, my dad was a great welder. These are skills that I didn’t exactly inherit. My welds aren’t always pretty but they’re solid and they get the job done at least. That’s why they invented grinders! So what exactly can I say about this welder? Incredible! This unit really does work on 120v or 240v with the RV style adapter, it’s very light and portable, and is great for some really surprisingly clean precision welding! And here I thought that all my welds had to be sloppy! I should also mention the that the large, easily readable, display is both large and easy to read! That may sound like I’m just trying to be funny, but this is the first time I’ve not had to stop working with a welder in order to go over to look at the display. Someone may have already mentioned this, but a foot pedal would be nice, but it’s not really necessary and would only increase the price. But I will admit that would be the only thing that I would change about this unit. My other welders are old beasts, the oldest one, a Lincoln Arc welder that I inherited from my grandfather, requires a hand truck to move it around, and even my far more modern MIG welder seems really bulky in comparison to this! I think a lot of people would call us a good beginner or hobby welder, but it isn’t limited by that definition. You could get some really strong and good looking work out of this! Even I did! Go figure. Due to the ease of use and portability, this may be my go to welder for many jobs. Like I said it quite impressive! Good grief I haven’t even played with half the features this thing has yet! Quite honestly, you can’t beat the price. This is incredibly cheap in comparison to what you find out there, and that’s why I was so skeptical at the beginning. AWT proved me wrong. This is a good piece of machinery at an excellent price! Highly recommended!

Basic hobby TIG at a good price.

What I liked: + Decent built quality + Excellent value for a home garage/starter machine + HF start What I was neutral on: ~ DC only (as stated), so no aluminum ~ Rated amperage feels like an over-estimate based on settings needed ~ Included gas line is stiff and as basic as it gets. Functional, but easily upgradeable. What I didn't care for: - Very low duty cycle. Potentially problematic if you were hoping to run longer, continuous welds on thicker material. For a home garage with 110 only, for TIG this unit worked fine for 1/16" to 1/8" material. For 3/16" it was ok on smaller welds, but you'll probably want to feed it 220 if this is the thickness you'll be mostly working with. I don't know that I would trust thicker than 3/16" with this hobby welder. And it is a hobby welder, for sure. For the price, this is a good machine for anyone to get their feet wet with TIG welding. You can get something cheaper if all you need is stick.
