No this Fountain really works much better than any of the other ones that I have bought this one's a much larger the water comes out freely there's even a blue light that glows at night so you don't trip over it cool. I would suggest spending the extra money and getting this one even if you only have one cat just keep it clean which is very easy to do because it's stainless steel the filters are really easy to change and there's no hassles as far as I'm concerned I rate it number five and I give it thumbs up

As already stated, the lack of being able to see into the bucket is both a boon and a bother. WAY less mold growth, as compared to the white plastic style waterers, and the stainless is much easier to sterilize. The filter occasionally gets clogged with detritus (we have 3 cats and busy little humans), but the pump just keeps on ticking. It gets bubbly-sounding when it is low on water. Even if we need to replace it at some point we can save the bucket for an extra water source when we go away from home and purchase another like it. We have had it in heavy use since purchase, without fail.

I love this so much and was reasonably priced. However it completely stopped working after 5 months with regular cleaning and filter changes. Maybe something else I am missing I see some others have problems with the pump?

We were refilling our dog's water bowl a couple times a day. It's great for the pets to have fresh water several times a day but if we weren't available to refill, the animals went without water. . . not so great. I can't believe it took me so long to buy a larger water bowl so that we just fill it fresh every morning and it lasts throughout the day. This water bowl is not only large enough to meet or dog's daily needs, it's stainless steel and super easy to keep clean. BONUS: we can choose to use the lid and pump, or not, and the water is silently circulated keeping the water fresh and clean. I'm relating this experience about our dog but our cat uses the same water bowl, so this is good for both of them. I highly recommend this water bowl.

UPDATE: I have been using this fountain for about 2 years. Originally it was plugged into a non-GFCI plug. A year ago, my otherwise healthy 4-year-old cat Loki died after sudden cardiac issues. The vet asked if he might have been electrocuted, and of course I thought of this fountain but didn't think it was the cause because the fountain was still working fine. I moved the fountain to a GFCI outlet in the kitchen. It was working with no problem for about a year, but today it tripped the GFCI. Now I believe that my poor Loki was shocked by the fountain somehow. I don't know that for sure, but it was the only thing plugged into the GFCI outlet other than a wall-mounted rechargeable hand vacuum (that was fully charged). BE CAREFUL ABOUT BUYING THIS FOUNTAIN, AND ***ALWAYS*** USE ANY FOUNTAIN ON A GFCI OUTLET!!! Original Review: I bought this fountain to replace a plastic one. I like that the reservoir is bigger, metal instead of plastic, and very quiet. But on my old fountain, there was a lighted window on the side so you can instantly see the water level. You could leave it running and pour water (slowly) into the top until the water was full. With this one, you have no idea unless you take the cover off. So you have to unplug it, carefully remove the lid which still has some water in it, and pour in the water. The instructions say that you can fill it to within a half inch of the top, but it's hard to see the water level if you're in a low light situation due to the shiny metal walls of the reservoir. Why they didn't put some kind of "max level" marking on the inside, I don't know. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I just don't see how else you can easily refill it. I don't regret my purchase, but I think this is going to get on my last nerve after a while.

So why don't my cats like it--or any water fountain for that matter. This is one of several I have gotten from Amazon. And every time it's the same reaction. Fascination for days with an occasional tasting before backing off and coming back and so on. (This, from cats who love to share my bathroom faucet when it is running.) I have tried and tried to get them to use it and nothing seems to work so I have gone back to a glass dish of water--and they are drinking more. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this. Just because my cats won't use it--though they still enjoy hanging out by it on occasion--doesn't mean anyone else's cats will feel the same. It is a high quality stainless steel fountain that burbles gently to give cats an unthreatening faucet-like experience. Heck, I'd use it were I a cat. And so might yours. It is obviously well designed and well made. One thing you should watch and that is if you have anything but the softest water (and, heck, maybe even then) is that the minerals in the water may cause a build-up of something you can feel and see on the fountain. It's certainly not dangerous but it cannot be gotten rid of by merely washing it. You will need to scrub it with a steel scrubber, thoroughly rinse it out, and then feel it all around to see if it is gone. Then wash it and refill it. Good luck. I hope your cats like it better than mine because it really is a fantastic fountain.

When this unit was working, I enjoyed the drinking capacity and the ease that my kitty and doggie had getting a nice long drink. The tank held a nice amount of water and only needed changing once a week. I did have to add water, but that was easy if poured in from the drinking area. This unit had two major drawbacks however. The last 2 months I had it, the pump worked only intermittently- once it started, it kept going, but I was concerned every time I changed the water and filters that it wouldn’t start again - this time it didn’t - maybe I should consider a year a success, but it should last a bit longer. The pump was very hard to clean. It grew algae inside the pump, and there was no way to flush it or scrub it out. The other parts cleaned with a brush, but I could not consider it clean with the pump full of algae. So I’m now replacing it, but not the same brand nor one with the same pump.
