  • 18B+: An amazing meter for its price-point. 9v battery is a plus. Nice display.
Color: Orange
Comparing a $20 unit to some high-end Fluke or Hioki is unfair. It is very impressive what this multi-meter can do. Even five years ago, this price-point with this high performance would have been unthinkable. It uses a 9v battery -- much better choice than those AA (and certainly AAA) batteries that leak so easily, best to avoid! Battery insertion could be more snug, that is the only physical improvement I can suggest. The rear compartment opens easily. The supplied leads are decent, not the high-end obviously, but superb for a $20 unit! There are two pairs! I would prefer to use my own silicone gold-plated leads. Nice big numeral display, and it also back-lights very nicely. Very nice standard layout of switch/buttons. The selector switch is smooth. At Room temperature, these results were verified against a high-end Fluke, in a very quick round of testing: Accuracy: AC RMS voltage measurement of 120v mains was surprisingly very accurate. Frequency measurement was dead on -- this counter is, from a design point of this low cost meter, the easiest reading to be accurate about, IMO; However the duty cycle was very slightly off -- surprisingly -- and is not an issue at all. I don't know who would test duty cycles. (Not tested are different duty cycles/frequencies/harmonics for broader RMS calculations) Measuring DC voltages: of 1.5 volt and 9 volt batteries was very accurate. Didn't use any reference power supply here, just these dry batteries. Continuity measurement: The meter is decently fast in responding to continuity tests -- the buzzer beeps decent fast. Very good thing. Didn't do any current measurements or capacitance tests. As mentioned above, this was just a quick test at room temperature. No insulation tests or safety tests were conducted -- where a high-end meter will certainly deliver, but I have no idea about this one. No thermal or physical shock testing is done. Overall conclusion: an amazing multi-meter for its price-point, and it gets all its basic features right. Accurate! Surprisingly good feeling holding the unit. The overall package was nicely put together. Can't ask for anything more of a $20 unit, really. I hope it performs well over long time: TBD. ... show more

  • Surprisingly not bad
Color: Orange
Please, remember what you bought here; a cheap DVOM. This meter is surprisingly easy to use and works well enough for 90% of my day to day uses. The 6000 counts is more than enough for me. What I like most: 1) You can turn off Automatic Power Off (APO) by holding the yellow button when you turn the meter on. This is real nice for performing a parasitic draw test on a car. You just set min max and walk away for the evening. 2) the package shipped with 2 sets of meter leads. They actually feel fairly nice for this price point. 3) the display is large and easy to read. The viewing angle is a little shallow, but remember this meter was cheap and an LCD display is never as good a a VFD. What I don't like: 1) I wish there was an easy way to override the backlight to stay on until turned off. Sometimes 90 seconds is inconvenient. 2) there is a little noise on the DC mV scale that will steadily creep up towards 1VDC if the meter sits idle. It's like charging a capacitor. If you touch the leads it comes back to zero, so it's not really that big a deal. 3) I think the mA fuse is open, even though I haven't tried using it. I did an internal continuity test for the fuses, probing the A and mA cavities with a test lead. The A cavity has a low resistance (<2ohm), but the mA cavity has excessive resistance (>20M Ohm). I'm pretty sure the fuse is missing or blown. Overall, I really like this meter for the price! ... show more

  • Excellent value for price, good overall accuracy
Color: 4 1/2 multimeter
I like multimeters and wondered how good a 20000 count $38 meter could be. Well... pretty good!... considering the low price. In a completely unfair test, I compared it to Fluke 289 and Fluke 87V multimeters (which I know to be very accurate). My observations: The Good: . DC Voltage tests (2.5v to 10v) - dead on, very accurate . AC Voltage tests (at household 120V levels) - accurate, within spec . DC current tests - accurate, well within 1% . Continuity tests - quite fast, better than average for a low cost meter . Resistance tests - accurate, well within 1% . Capacitance tests - within spec; the usual 3% - 5% accuracy . NCV - Non Contact Voltage sensor, nice to have, works well. . 20000 count, nice to have. Side effect is that some readings can take a bit longer to settle. . Build Quality - seems better than average for a low-cost Chinese meter. While it does not have the the same heft and quality feel as a Fluke or Brymen, it *does* have an actual removable boot/holster (see photo), a crisp precise selection dial, and decent quality test leads. But like most other inexpensive meters, it does feel somewhat light and plastic-y. . Display is large and readable, sharp and crisp. The secondary readout is nice, but only active during AC voltage tests. The Less Good: . Diode tests - within spec; will light all LEDs but will only read voltage drop for red/yellow LEDs, not green/blue/white LEDs (i.e. anything > 2v drop?). Quite a few meters fail to handle LED testing as they should, so not an uncommon deficiency. Measurement of regular diodes seems to work fine, and produces accurate readings. . Bar Graph - as near as I could tell, the bar graph as implemented on this meter merely reflects the current digital numeric readout. It does not provide the kind of separate quick-reaction display that one sees on more costly meters. Too bad, since this negates most of the usefulness of the bar graph and it becomes merely decorative. . Peak - peak min/max readings seem to be available *only* for AC voltage readings, not the broader min/max capabilities found on pricier meters. . Backlight - works well, but a the backlight LED produces a pronounced uneven lighting on the left side (see photo). Doesn’t bother me much, but some could find this annoying. . Like many Chinese meters, this one beeps every time you turn the selection switch to a new setting: Annoying. . No warnings when the test lead is accidentally left in the10A socket during non-current testing. I took the meter apart and noted that the input protection features are limited, but perhaps a little better-than-average for this price class. The sockets are the usual stamped pot-metal-looking affairs, but the board includes what appear to be decent-sized HRC fuses. The 10M-ohm current limiting resistance is provided by a set of four MELF-type 2.5M resistors. No MOVs to be seen, but but there is a lone PTC. No circuit board cutouts, or other physical shielding, but overall looks perhaps a bit better than the usual cheap-meter average. It claims cat IV 600v rating but I’d hesitate to trust that, and plan to use it only with voltages less inclined to rock my world. See photo... So, not perfect, and not high-end meter quality and features, but still a better-than-average set of capabilities for the price. Should be excellent for general around-the-house tasks, hobbyist use, or as a spare/truck meter. ... show more

  • Nice meter
Color: 4 1/2 multimeter
Has all the features. Came with lots of accessories, two sets of leads, tweezer leads, temp probe, alligator clips, minimalistic meter case and 10 jumpers with alligator ends. The peak feature is why I bought this meter and it works well. Recommend.
