  • Incredible Detail - Very sturdy
I'm super hard to impress so to get me to even write a review is a challenge in itself... About the hive. It is a really well designed hive. Lots of attention to detail, solid construction. The whole thing is coated with beeswax too which I wasn't expecting, but was pleasantly surprised. If you're looking for an alternative to a hive that's more than 3 times the price, don't hesitate. This is the real deal. And you'll have a lot of cash "Flow" left over. The ONLY issue is the instructions are limited. The pieces only tend to go together one way, so you'll figure it out, even easier if your convert MM to in when you're assembling and wondering where the pieces go. Overall, an incredible purchase. I'll Bee 🐝 purchasing two more for what I saved not buying the other brand. ... show more

  • Decent for the money
The dovetailed corners of the boxes did require some filing to get the pieces to fit. Following instructions from other bee box videos, I used outdoor wood glue plus the long screws (I bought some extra 2 inch decking screws = compatible with cedar wood) to join the main box sides. Not sure the glue will really stick because of the wax impregnated wood but it seems to be sticking. (Other commenters had complained about the boxes falling apart.) The instructions are not detailed enough: They don't say where to use the long screws. None of the parts are labeled, so it's difficult to piece the puzzle pieces together. The video with this particular bee house does show how to determine the end pieces. The roof is missing a couple screws. The knobs would not screw together tightly on the one piece of thin wood that covers the "key access caps". Used Gorilla glue on those. Had to hammer the metal insides of those two knobs back into the knobs. ***The bottom brood box does not have regular bee frames, so that's another $50. It holds 10 deep or brood size frames and foundations.*** Put strong screening over the ventilation holes in the roof or you'll have bees in the attic. Have to wait and see if the Auto Frame really works. Otherwise it's a good copycat of the original Australian hive at about 1/3rd the price. ... show more

  • Not for the beginner!
First off, if you are a beginner, do not go buy bees or catch a swarm without buying some standard frames for the brood box. You should learn as much as you can before trying to start a hive. On a side note draining honey is not as simple as the promotional videos and literature suggest. All in all a great product for anyone willing to learn but do not make unnecessary errors. Read up on some things and have fun. ... show more

  • Seems to be a good hive so far with some issues.
Overall nice materials. Instructions were off a bit but if you know your way around woodworking not to hard to figure out. Definitely pre-drill your screw holes as the wood will split if you don't. Mine was missing a couple of screws but that is not a major issue. The only major/minor issue I have had so far is that the back board for the flow box was cut wrong leaving a gap of a little under half an inch. I checked upper and lower back panels just to make sure I didn't put something together wrong but everything was correct. Now I have to go find a small piece of cedar to plug the hole or try to find a way to utilize the hole for circulation. I will try to add pictures later. There were a fair number of small gaps that I filled with wood glue but nothing major. ... show more

  • Looks good so far
The media could not be loaded. This is my first dive into bee keeping so i am a total beginner. Having said that it looks like good quality considering the hives I have been around are looking pretty shabby and the bees seem to be loving them. This one is coated in wax which is supposed to help attract the bees. Assembly is not necessarily for the inexperienced in woodworking. I used to build cabinets professionally. So the non-helpful instructions were not an issue. They are basically picture explosions, so if you are good with that type of thing you will be fine. A novice could totally do this but give yourself time and watch a few YouTube videos that i am sure are on YouTube. ... show more

  • Some things you need to know
I bought this hive about a year ago and I have learned a lot about bees since then. Here are some things I wish I had known when setting up this hive. First, ditch the peaked roof with the ventilation holes and buy a regular flat roof. Bees will move into the peaked roof and start defending it, making it impossible for you to open the hive without a disaster ensuing -- angry bees everywhere, broken comb, squishing bees when you try to put it back on, etc. Plus the roof full of comb and honey is heavy. Second, the photos above show the flow frame access on the front, where the bee entrance is. That's a big mistake -- if you set up your hive this way (as I did) you will have bees all over you. Set it up so that the flow access is in the BACK. Even then, this leads to my third point: The opening for the flow frame access has some gaps that bees can get through so they will start using this as a back door. The back door won't be as busy as the front door, but it will probably bee too busy for you to harvest honey peacefully the way you hoped. As a result of all of these things, we haven't managed to harvest honey yet so I cannot speak to how well the actual flow frames work. I intend to fix the gaps, change the roof, etc., but to do all this I am buying an entire second hive to move the bees into so that I can fix this hive. Hopefully my review will save you this aggravating step. ... show more

  • Decent hive
Instructions need some tlc but not too hard to figure out. My hive has a gap between honey super and top of brood box on front of hive. Not sure if there’s a function for this or if it wasn’t cut correctly. Also entrance reducer doesn’t fit at all and think it’s because it wasn’t cut correctly? Also does this fit 8 or 10 brood frames. Can’t find any info on this ... show more

  • Putting together with minimal instruction
This is an ingenious product with quality wood. The instructions are terrible with no parts marked. Screws do not have life size pictures, so measure screws and count them to put right size screws in right places. Some joints go together beautifully, others require hammer and splitting wood. Has a metal rod that I still don’t know what it’s for. Really wouldn’t recommend until they can improve instructions. ... show more
