Description

The DragonTail USB adaptor activates USB Host Mode on most Android devices allowing the devices to transmit USB digital audio to an outboard digital-to- analog converter (DAC). Using DragonTail to connect to an external USB DAC such as an AudioQuest DragonFly will provide greatly improved audio performance. Solid 5% Silver Conductors Solid conductors eliminate strand- interaction distortion and reduce jitter. Solid silver-plated conductors are excellent for very high-frequency applications like HDMI audio and video. These signals being such a high frequency travel almost exclusively on the surface of the conductor. As the surface is made of high-purity silver the performance is very close to that of a solid silver cable but priced much closer to solid copper cable. This is an incredibly cost effective way of manufacturing very high-quality HDMI cables. All Conductors Controlled for RF Noise Directionality Hard-Cell Foam Insulation Hard-Cell Foam (HCF) Insulation ensures critical signal-pair geometry. Any solid material adjacent to a conductor is actually part of an imperfect circuit. Wire insulation and circuit board materials all absorb energy. Some of this energy is stored and then released as distortion. Hard-Cell Foam Insulation is similar to the Foamed-PE used in AQ's more affordable Bridges Falls cables and is nitrogen- injected to create air pockets. Because nitrogen (like air) does not absorb energy and therefore does not release any energy from or into the conductor distortion is reduced. In addition the stiffness of the material allows the cable's conductors to maintain a stable relationship along the cable's full length producing a stable impedance character and further minimizing distortion. Carbon-Based Noise- and Crosstalk-Dissipation System This cable's negative conductors are covered with partially conductive Carbon-Loaded Polyethylene. This remarkable material reduces radio-frequency garbage being fed back into the ampl

  • AudioQuest quality at it's best!
If you own any other AudioQuest products, you won't be disappointed. This design is BETTER than previous designs because the smaller barrel around the C end easily fits in the hole of the protective case for my phone (Samsung S10). From the phone, playing USB Audio Player Pro, to the DragonTail, to a JitterBug, to a DragonFly Red, to Moon Audio Bronze cable, to JH Audio JH 11 Pro IEMs, the sound is sublime. I saw other reviews and contacted AudioQuest for clarification on the design. I have an original DragonTail (A to A), so I can personally attest to the accuracy of what they say: "The thickness of the previous jacket on the previous DragonTails does not mean the newer jacket on the newer DragonTail is lower quality. The conductors inside are still the same SEMI-SOLID 5% SILVER CONDUCTORS. We have added strain reliefs that the previous cables did not have. Also the bulk of the previous barrels on the connectors were not necessary. The new DragonTail USB-C is actually an improved design over the previous DragonTails." ... show more

  • 1st disappointing AudioQuest product
Normally I love AudioQuest products. I’ve spent plenty on AQ analog interconnects, power cords, speaker cables, adapters, HDMI cables, and digital data cables over the last 20 years. This is my first disappointing AQ product. I used the Dragon Tail as an adapter between my new MacMini’s USB-C port and the rest of my digital audio system - a Cardas USB-A to USB-B cable into a PS Audio DAC and onto the rest of the audio gear - all moderately high end stuff that works beautifully and sounds better. The new MacMini replaced an older MacMini with more USB-A ports. I originally had the Cardas USB-A cable attached directly to one of the two USB-A ports on the new MacMini, and it sounded just as good as ever. So I know nothing is inherently wrong with my existing setup. When I plugged the Dragon Tail in between the MacMini and Cardas USB-A cable, I immediately noticed the left and right channels were oscillating occasionally. Then the sound was noticeably flatter, duller, and without any of the dynamic soundstage I was used to in the old setup. This was on a piece of high res music I’ve played scores of times before. I unplugged the Dragon Tail and plugged the Cardas USB cable back into the MacMini’s USB-A port and the sound was back to normal. I was shocked at the difference in sound quality. Now, it’s possible my problem was the USB-C port on my Mac. But I tried a couple of them before removing the Dragon Tail and no change. So I’m 99% sure the Dragon Tail is the source of the sound problems. It’s also possible I’m using this somehow out of spec since the Dragon Tail is supposed to compliment the AQ Dragonfly USB DACs. But there’s no indication this couldn’t be used as a standard USB-A to USB-C adapter. It’s a pretty generic use case. So I’m really disappointed the Dragon Tail didn’t solve my problem. I have a USB-C to USB-B AQ cable in a second system and I could have bought one of those, but the existing Cardas cable does such a good job that I’m just going to figure out other ways to use the Mac’s USB-C ports. So the Dragon Tail will get returned. I hope this is just a defective unit. ... show more

  • It's apparently legit.
A prior review, which I didn't notice until after ordering the item, expressed doubt as to the authenticity of the product. I shared the same concern having also owned the USB-A to A version and noting considerable aesthetic differences upon arrival. However the box appeared perfectly printed with images showing the part inside. I still had my doubts, so I ordered a second one from Crutchfield figuring two could be handy regardless. They were identical in every way... Turns out the USB-C OTG adapter is just a different and less substantially constructed DragonTail than the A to A legacy part. No functional or suspected aural coloration issues though. I'm happy with the quality of the electrical paths offered with this product and the tidy connection solution provided when streaming from my phone to my home HiFi DAC or my Dragonfly Red. ... show more

  • Works well but rather expensive.
Works well to connect Dragonfly Red to new MacBook Air with M1 chip. With an easy to drive headphones - SONY MDR V6 the headphone out on the Mac is rather underwhelming. The Red steps in and makes these headphones alive with dynamics, transparency and a very solid bass. At $30.00 this is rather expensive dongle cable. At this point Audioquest should have Drangonfly with the USB C already built in. Hello Audioquest - its 2021!!! ... show more

  • Works with Pixel phones to allow the use of a DragonFly
This is perfect for the use of a DragonFly Red with my Pixel 3. Highly recommended, if you like headphones and quality sound.

  • Best sounding such product
One of the only audiophile grade adapters out there. I've tried them all and this is the best-sounding of the heap. Looks sleek too. Relatively good build quality. Only complaint is that it doesn't consistently make contact with the ground contact with all usb-A cables - something's a hair off in the tolerances there (unless the USB standard's tolerances or insufficiently tight to guarantee compatibility?). ... show more

  • Solid Cable with no loss of audio quality
Very well made and solid cable. I bought it to run my Chord Mojo DAC off my Samsung tablet. The audio quality is superb. The cable is somewhat stiff which is due to the solid construction of the cable. I have numerous Audioquest products and I have never been disappointed. If you like high quality music then way would you run your tunes through cruddy cables?? Spend a little extra and get this cable. ... show more
