  • Good option but have realistic expectations
I have the baby brother to this engraver, which is only 5 watts and doesn't have the camera and as a beginner, I've been good with it. It wasn't very expensive and it let me dabble without a huge investment. But what I've learned since then is how limited a 5 watt engraver is. This 12 watt is a HUGE step up and the camera is a must-have. However, you still need to do some research on what different kinds of laser engravers can do. A 12 watt engraver can ENGRAVE a lot of materials, and surface mark others (i.e., it can mark slate but not really engrave). And it can cut some very thin materials (i.e., leather, cardboard, foam board) though it may take multiple passes (thin birch plywood, for example). But it's not meant for cutting, it's not going to cut hardwood and it's not going to be fast on things it can cut. Diods can't cut or engrave clear acrylic or transparent plastic. It can't engrave or cut metal, though it can remove a coating or mark the metal. This engraver is very portable, which I like since I don't have a place to set it up permanently, but the tradeoff is the cutting area. It has an enclosure to help reduce the threat of damage from looking at the laser, but always, always wear safety glasses meant for lasers anyway. There is a learning curve to using the software and the laser, be prepared for a lot of trial and error. So with all these limitations, why did I give it five stars? Because I think it's a good engraver IF it's what you want. All the limitations are not about the laser itself, but about 12 watt diode lasers in general. I just hate when people expect laser engravers at this price point to do things that you need to spend at least 4-5x as much to do, then get angry or disappointed because they didn't do their research first. Why do you want an engraver? What kinds of projects do you want to make? Do you have a permanent place to set up an engraver? Do you have proper ventilation? Just realize that laser engraving is a skill. It will take time to get good at it. You don't buy a sewing machine and expect to be making wedding dresses your first day. And you don't buy a sewing machine expecting it to do serging. So just think about what you want to do, do the research, and if a 12 watt diode with a 4.7 inch bed will do what you want, then I think this is a good choice. ... show more

  • Fast and Compact, but Hard to Justify the Price
I was really intrigued by the idea behind the AtomStack Atelier. A compact galvo-style diode laser that’s portable, fast, and beginner friendly sounded like a great addition to my workspace. After using it for a bit, I can say it does some things really well, but it also has a few limitations that make it harder to fully recommend at its current price. The biggest highlight is definitely the speed. The galvo system makes engraving incredibly fast compared to most standard diode lasers. For smaller designs, logos, or batch engraving on things like coasters or tags, it moves through jobs quickly and efficiently. If speed is what you’re looking for, this machine definitely delivers. I also like the compact design. It’s small enough to fit comfortably on a desk and easy to move around if needed. The built-in camera is helpful for positioning designs, especially when you’re trying to place something precisely on a small item. The enclosed design also feels safer and a bit more polished compared to open-frame engravers. That said, the limitations start to show pretty quickly. The biggest issue for me is the price compared to what you get. For a 12W diode laser, it feels expensive. There are other machines in a similar price range that offer larger work areas and stronger cutting performance. The working area is fairly small, which limits the types of projects you can realistically do. It works great for small items and personalization projects, but anything larger quickly becomes a challenge. Cutting ability is also fairly limited. It can handle thin wood, leather, paper, and cardboard, but anything thicker takes multiple passes and patience. That’s fairly typical for diode lasers, but at this price point I expected a bit more versatility. I also feel like some of the extra features add complexity without necessarily improving the experience. The camera and automation features are nice, but they don’t always feel essential and can take a bit of time to get dialed in. Overall, the AtomStack Atelier is a clever little machine and it’s definitely fast. It works well for small engraving projects and personalization work. But between the limited workspace, moderate cutting power, and high price, it feels more like a niche tool than a must-have for most hobbyists. Pros: Extremely fast engraving speeds Compact and portable design Built-in camera helps with positioning Good for small engraving projects Cons: Expensive for a 12W diode laser Small working area Cutting thicker materials takes multiple passes Some features feel unnecessary or overly complicated In the end, it’s a neat and capable engraver for small jobs, but the price and limitations kept it from being a full five-star product for me. ... show more
