  • Nice but registers mere hang-ups as true messages
This product came on time but the packaging, although it's a new product, looks messy. The telephone box had no protection around it, as shown below. Now, if the BASE # keypad would light up, only messages would register, and the machine included a remote call transfer, I would give it 5 star. My non-bluetooth Panasonic machine of 27 years would actually, in transfer mode, call my cell phone wherever I was to let me know I had a message waiting. PROS -Great looks -Easy bluetooth and answering machine setup includes date & time, shown on the screen and by voice. -Base screen has big letters and is bright. -Remote access to retrieve messages (by setting a code first). -Handset number keypad lights up. -Numbers on base keypad are quite big (black keys with white numbers). -Once paired with your cell phone, you can make/answer calls on this phone, similar to how it's done in a car with a bluetooth system. You have to press the "cellular" key to do so, though. (You must let your cell phone search for nearby devices to pair both cell and landline phones. It's not automatic.) -The handset needs no connection to a wall phone jack as it connects through the base's bluetooth. CONS -The base # keypad does NOT light up. -Menu, cancel, DIR and CID keys are tiny and extremely hard, if not impossible to see in poor light. Place base in well-lit area. -This message system is not smart (like in my old Panasonic). If the machine is activated to pick up but no voice message is left, a "message" still registers and mailbox key blinks. BIG bummer because I get lots of calls from marketers that hang up when they hear the machine tone. If I retrieve messages remotely, it would be a waste of time, minutes and energy. -No key shows number of new messages unless you press the mailbox key. -No message forwarding. This AT&T answering machine only transfers calls from the base to the handset and in the allowed range, not remotely from landline to cell or other distant phone. -Blue ring light on handset stays on all the time. May be a little too bright in a bedroom. Overall, it's a good answering machine with a lot of features, but, for the price, it could certainly be improved by adding light to the dial pad and having the machine recognize between a hang-up call and a real voice message. ... show more

  • Dependable With Good Features
We had this model phone for probably 8 to 10 years when it died. No fuss, no muss, simply died. So I shopped around and while there were some features I would have liked, the main features I needed were available on this model so we purchased it again. It has a corded hand set which my husband loves because he is hearing impaired. I like the portable handset with a jack so I can plug in my headphones and wander around the house and do things. No all phones had these two features which is hard to believe. The sound quality is good, the display is easy to read, and setting it up took only minutes (granted I was already familiar with this phone). If you need a home phone, this one is great. We didn’t need a two line phone, but it doesn’t hurt to have it. ... show more

  • Capable home-friendly 2-line system
Due to some required changes I need to make in my landline phone service (I have to change from 1 copper landline and 1 VoIP to 2 VoIP lines), it would prove to be functionally better to go with a corded/cordless combo, and a 2-line system if possible. I was originally thinking I would only have a plain 2-line unit at my home office desk, and use a single-line corded/cordless for elsewhere in the home, because most 2-line units are intended as office phones. Then I found the TL86109. This phone would do all the jobs I needed... corded base unit at my home office desk, and cordless phones elsewhere which were also 2-line units that would allow me to answer either line with any phone. The TL86109 comes with one cordless handset and I purchased one extra AT&T TL86009 DECT 6.0 Accessory Handset for TL86109, Silver/Black to go with it. After the full 2-line capability of all the units, the best feature for me was the ringer volume control on all three units. Most landline phones are HI, LO, and OFF, with a few also having a medium. But even at the LO setting, most phones of the last 10 years or so are still quite loud and piercing... a phone ringing shouldn't be a jolting experience, even when you're wide awake. The TL86109 and 86009 phones all have 6 volume settings, and I have mine all on "2", which is wonderfully quiet but still noticeable so that you don't miss a call. There are also a whole slew of ring tones to choose from, so the two lines can be distinctively different - and if you're really adventurous, each phone unit can have a unique pair of tones. One thing I misread in the product info from AT&T, but was not a critical problem, was regarding the headset capability. The main info notes it can handle a standard 2.5mm headset plug, and I thought that applied to the corded base station. In fact, the 2.5mm headset jack is actually on the cordless handsets, while the base station is only capable of supporting a Bluetooth headset. Again, not a critical issue, although I will probably get a suitable Bluetooth headset for use at my desk. When setting up the base unit, the instructions make note to use the supplied black cord in line 1's jack and the clear cord in line 2. They don't explain why, but interestingly enough, it did seem to make a slight difference. When I had the black cord in line 2, it seemed as though the line would stay off-hook. No such problems when I switched them after reading that note in the manual. One disappointment was the AC cord for the base unit, which is required for both the cordless signal and the features like caller ID and answering machine functions. The AC cord is a little short... less than 5 feet of usable length. Again, not a critical problem for me, but something to keep in mind if the base station can't be right on top of an outlet or surge protector. Sound quality is quite good, and range is not a concern in my home. Every unit has a nice white-lit screen, and the main dialpad is backlit (blue) in the cordless handsets (but not the base). The base can support up to 12 cordless handsets, and the base can share a call with up to 4 cordless units simultaneously. Really like this system, and it's the perfect unit if you have separate lines for home and home office, but don't want to buy a business-grade system that is "too much" phone. ... show more
