  • A Pleasant Surprise
Style: 256GB SSD
I'm a software developer who is working on a Windows software project and I needed a machine that would let me work on my project on the go without breaking the bank. I've owned several Macbook Pro's over the years, and while I'd love to have another one, it was simply out of my price range for my requirements. So I spent a lot of time researching and this ASUS machine seemed to be the best value for my money on paper. For the record, I haven't had good experiences with ASUS products in the past. I've bought 4 different hardware components from them over the years, and all 4 went through RMA for various failures (3 monitors and a video card). Needless to say I was a little hesitant to pull the trigger on this, but it had good reviews and Amazon is great about returns so I decided to take a chance. This machine is an outstanding value. The build quality is fantastic. Nice uni-body design. Trackpad is comparable in quality to the Macbook Pros I've used. Key travel is nice for a chicklet style. 1080p display is crisp, readable and doesn't completely destroy battery life. I haven't timed the battery life, but I'm able to work for most of the day before having to plug in. Has integrated graphics but some of my older Steam games play well on it. Bluetooth works without issues. The SSD is lightning fast compared to the Samsung 850 Pro in my desktop. Literally boots in few seconds. Fingerprint reader works great for Windows Hello. The only criticisms I can give are that the webcam is a bit sub-par and that the on-board speakers leave a bit to be desired. The speakers are fine for your Netflix marathon (they're clear and have adequate volume) but they aren't very musical. The webcam sensor's low light performance isn't good, but it does okay in better lighting. All that said, they put the money in all the right places on this machine. If this one outlives its warranty, ASUS might get me to consider some other products in their line again. Update 9/19/17: I'm happy to report I haven't had any issues with this machine so far. Everything is still working great. ... show more

  • 5 Stars And I'd Buy It Again
Style: 256GB SSD
First of all, I'm very happy with this and I'd buy it again for its combination of reasonable speed, weight, and price. This is the first non-Thinkpad laptop that I've purchased in quite awhile and the reason I chose this over a less expensive Thinkpad 13 at the Lenovo Outlet on-line store (the Thinkpad was about $100 less) was that those used a Sky Lake (previous generation) cpu and the equivalent current gen cpu Thinkpad 13's (equivalent to this Zenbook) were twice the price. The current gen cpu offers slightly better performance with measurably better battery-life. Were battery-life not a concern, I would've chosen the Lenovo Outlet's Thinkpad 13 for its *much* better keyboard, that terrific trackpoint and its mil-spec durability. This being said, though, in the (several days of heavy use) this is still a terrific device and I have no real complaints. As I say, I do miss the Thinkpad keyboard because this keyboard is quite mushy and difficult to adapt to. Still, it's not the worst I've ever used and it's very serviceable. The trackpad is much better than average and I've no complaints at all (though a Thinkpad-like trackpoin would've been awesome). The display is quite bright (but disable Win 10's adaptive brightness when on AC power to take advantage of it) and performance is outstanding for everything that I use it for (office work -- including fairly substantial number-crunching -- video streaming/playback and the like). Battery-life has been outstanding for me and it easily lasts 10 hours of average use with adaptive brightness and the screen set to 60%. Performance and battery-life have more than lived up to their promises. The only issue that I've had is a Win 10 problem of waking up with password security set. The fingerprint reader on my unit doesn't recognize my fingerprint in this case (other times, it is mostly reliable) and there's no input box for the password; forcing me to turn the machine off then back on. It's an odd problem that doesn't occur on boot but it's more likely Windows-related than hardware-related. I solved it by disabling this feature in Windows. Win 10 makes a clean-install of windows quite easy and I expect that'll solve the problem completely once a get a chance to do it. Whether the Zenbook will hold up as well as a Thinkpad over time (the 4 that I've had have all been virtually indestructible; impervious to drops, liquid spills on the keyboard and general daily life) remains to be seen but, so far, I'm impressed with the device's build-quality and features and I think you will be, too. If you're shopping for a laptop, though, don't overlook the Lenovo Outlet either (you probably want to look for a *new* machine, not a refurbished) ... show more
