  • Fantastic CPU in an affordable hardware package
Style: 2023 Model
This thing has a powerhouse of a mobile CPU with the 7940HS and benchmarks quite well. It is very quiet under load by default, which comes with a reduction in performance, but can be switched into a performance cooling mode which is moderately loud but provides sufficient cooling to provide performance out of this processor that equals laptops at twice the price. The memory can be upgraded, if necessary, up to 40GB. The stock SSD is shockingly fast and provides for an off to genuinely usable boot time of around 5 seconds. ASUS did NOT bottleneck this machine with slow components outside of the CPU. The wireless chip is modern with WIFI 6e standards, but throughput is capped at 1x1, so roughly 150mbit. As a desktop replacement for web browsing, streaming, office tasks, this thing is extremely fast and smooth. The display is 1920x1200, but this works well at the given size and helps make up for the lack of a discrete GPU in most use cases. My biggest complaint is the touchpad clunkiness but this can be rectified with the use of a wireless mouse. The keyboard is okay, won't break easily, but isn't the best feeling. The keyboard layout is very acceptable for most tasks. The integrated GPU is surprisingly powerful and can handle more than one would expect, but this isn't a gaming laptop by any means. Minecraft and other games that are CPU heavy run quite well. This would struggle to run more GPU heavy titles. The physical hardware is cleverly designed, maintaining a rugged feel, but on a budget. On tear down, it is very clear where the cost savings has been. Nothing that is unnecessary is inside this thing and it has quite a lot of open space where more battery could have been added, but likely omitted due to cost. The charger is a proprietary plug, not USB-C, however it can be charged via USB-C, but using the included charger has additional charging benefits. Battery life is great. The charger has a mode to enable protecting the battery if it will remain plugged into the wall for prolonged use. Overall, I can't find another laptop with this amount of hardware performance, general usability, and responsiveness for anywhere close to this price. ... show more

  • 7940HS at a Budget Price
Style: 2023 Model
SO, My last laptop was an HP 7100U that I upgraded to an SSD in early 2020. That made the laptop much faster, and made the battery last about an hour longer as well. I decided to start using that laptop for casual use, like light reading, word editing, and taking school tests where a web-cam is required. This laptop, the ASUS Vivobook 16, with a 7940HS, was the logical upgrade. On sale, at $599, this laptop is essentially a steal. Most other laptop brands will charge you minimum $799 for a PCIE 4.0 drive, and a 7840HS. The problems with this laptop come down to the cooling. The laptop gets very hot in your lap while plugged in, running at max 54W performance. Placing it on a table helps immensely with that. During regular, non-gaming use, the laptop is perfectly capable of cooling itself. Youtube, multiple tabs, Discord, all run well. It is an 8 core 16 threaded beast, that will last years to come. The cons I have with this laptop is that it comes with a 100 Watt barrel charger. Why include a barrel port charger at 100W when the USB C protocol allows 100 Watt charging? A USB C charger would have been helpful. The 16GB of ram is only partially upgradable. 8GB is soldered onto the motherboard, while 8GB is removeable and upgradeable. I would recommended pairing this laptop with a 24GB stick of DDR5 sodimm from Crucial. The SSD doesn't not have a DRAM cache, and is only slightly faster than a maxed out PCIE 3.0 drive. This drive runs at around 4000 MB random read and write, while the 4.0 standard can be maxed out to 7000 MB a second. Value and price considered, at $600, if you're willing to deal with a single soDIMM slot, the processor gives massive performance for the price. ... show more

  • Decent choice for most people
Style: 2023 Model
This laptop had a sale price of $599.99 which was quite competitive for a laptop equipped with the AMD Ryzen 7940hs cpu. Upon receipt of the laptop it was discovered both in the bios & task manager that the ddr5 ram used by Asus was only ddr5-4800 which was a bit of a head scratcher considering that Asus has lots of true gaming laptops so inserting the higher speed ddr5-5500 shouldn’t have been an issue. This normally wouldn’t be an issue but most laptops these days have soldered ram and this one does as well unfortunately… to be specific, it has 1stick soldered to the mobo + one stick that is user replaceable. Since the soldered stick is only ddr5-4800 there’s no use in pairing it with ddr5-5500. Second observation was that the keyboard lighting brightness was not able to be adjusted or disabled via keyboard shortcuts. Even after updating the bios, this still couldn’t be remedied. Display was nice overall with the 16:10 ratio. In general this is a pretty quick laptop overall but it definitely could’ve left the “factory” in a more optimized state that would’ve provided up to a 30% increase in performance. Battery life was very “so-so” unless the user is only doing extremely undemanding tasks. ... show more

  • Linux not possible
Style: 2023 Model
I know that sounds like a rookie headline but I have been a Linux user since Redhat 7.x. I installed Fedora 39 from a live USB stick. No matter what I do, the machine will not recognize the internal WiFi card (I previously tested it in Win11. The card works). I could probably fix this with some additional packages installed. BUT THIS MACHINE IS WIFI ONLY so I have no access to DNF. Who ever heard of any computer without an ethernet interface? Isn't that something that EVERYONE expects to be present? It's a shame really because the machine is a very good value. Excellent graphics, fast TB disk and a backlit keyboard. 16gb of memory is more than enough for Linux but probably less than desirable for Windows. BTW. I also had some problems with the touchpad. ... show more
