  • Built like a tank
Style: RTX 2070 | 512G SSD | 144Hz
Purchased this guy to upgrade from an ASUS GL-502VM. The build quality is leaps and bounds higher. Virtually no deck flex and feels super solid. The screen quality is good. I do wish it were a 1440p display and/or it had G-sync support, but at least it runs well at 144Hz. As with other nVidia laptops, if you hook up a G-sync compatible display via DisplayPort, it works. The NVME SSD that it comes with isn't incredibly fast compared to the Samsung 960 EVO that I replaced it with, but it's still faster than SATA. Speaking of SATA, it does come with the ability to add your own 2.5" SATA SSD. Comes with a cage for it, and a special fiddly ribbon connector as it doesn't have SATA data or power ports on the motherboard. Not very difficult to install, but it does require a careful touch to not mess up the ribbon connector's latch. More about upgrades. You can upgrade the RAM. At least partially. Opening the back gives you access to the M.2 slot, SATA drive and 1 DIMM slot. I'm not sure if it has 8GB soldered to the motherboard, or if there's a 2nd DIMM slot on the other side of the motherboard. The speakers on this thing are fantastic. They produce a lot more bass than I initially thought they would. They fire out the right and left sides around the bottom of the keyboard so they aren't easily covered by hands. They can also get quite loud without distorting or vibrating the chassis. It took me a while to figure out the Aura stuff for changing the keyboard lighting (and disabling the light strip on the front which I find kind of obnoxious). The CPU and GPU are both fantastic and keep cool, as well as keeping the keyboard cool so it's comfortable to game on for a long time. Keep in mind that unlike the Pascal cards, the mobile variants of these Turing cards are not identical to the desktop cards. They have a bit less SU's and are clocked a bit slower. The trackpad is glass as well as having separate right and left click buttons. It uses Windows Precision drivers as well. It still has some troubles that I can't seem to work out yet (sometimes input is ignored for a second or two), but most people probably won't use it too often. Overall, I love this thing and will probably continue to use it for several years down the road. ... show more

  • Needs upgrades. Great laptop and I would recommend.
Style: RTX 2070 | 512G SSD | 144Hz
This laptop is nearly perfect and can not really be beat for the price. I got this laptop on sale for a pretty good price and the performance is great. However I have to give it 4/5 stars for a couple reasons. It did not have a 32gb option so I had to prefer a second stick of 16gb ram. Also, the stock thermal paste is cheap and flakey. Before the upgrades I did the laptop performed acceptably. After, I am seeing an average of about 50% performance increase. Games are smoother, performance is better, and temps are more under control. Without the second stick of ram I would rarely stick around the 144 FPS cap while gaming. After, I average very close to 144 and rarely drop below 100 FPS. The keyboard has zoned lighting. I’ve had worse but I’ve also had better. The backlight could also be brighter but I can live with it. The keys feel nice to press. If you are looking for a descent gaming laptop at a good price this is a good one to consider. I recommend having some one who knows what they are doing repaste the chips and memory because it really did help my temps. I used arctic thermal paste but others perform similarly. I opted for pads for the VRM chips and kept paste on the VRAM. Seems to be working fine. I wish I could give this laptop 5 stars but the thermal paste was such a mess and so much of a hassle to remove. It had literally dried completely in 2 weeks of use. I attached a picture of what I saw when I opened it. Not a great paste job please don’t cut corners Asus. I’m sure other laptops have the same problem though. I usually use the manual fan mode and crank the fans. I can usually sit stable at 75C on both chips with the fans cranked however they do get loud. I use turbo mode sometimes and temps sit around 85C with less noise. The fans seem pretty good and do make a difference when manually controlled. I use a chill pad mostly to keep the bottom of the laptop open so air can get in easier. Overal a good laptop but you should upgrade it upon receiving it to unlock its full potential. ... show more

  • Great Bang for the Buck Gaming Laptop!
Style: RTX 2070 | 512G SSD | 144Hz
Excellent laptop for gaming. My only gripe was that it only came with a single 16GB stick of RAM. For those not familiar, overall performance is usually better with 2 sticks (dual channel). It's okay though, it gave me a reason to upgrade to 32GB. Benchmark scores went up an average of 10-15% in certain parts of the benchmark. For gamers, yes my FPS did go up after going to two sticks. The 144hz refresh rate is awesome. When in Turbo mode, fans are high but everything is Really Fast! For normal use, I would use in Silent or Balanced mode. I like that Asus put in a dedicated button on the keyboard to switch between these (ROG button). It's slightly heavier than the Zepharys G I originally bought and returned, but WAY more powerful than it so the trade-off was acceptable to me. This laptop is definitely worth it if you're a gamer. The 2070 GPU is amazing. The RGB keyboard and ROG symbol on the back is a plus. For hardcore gamers, Asus implemented overstroke technology so that your keystrokes are registered a few ms faster than usually. The wifi range is great and fast with 2x2 antennas. Speakers are the best laptop speakers I have ever heard. Hard drive is M.2 NVME. For those that don't know, this is much faster than traditional Sata SSD drives. CPU is great (Intel I7 6 core/12 thread). Ever the design is awesome with slim bezels, awesome brushed metal back, and camo on the inside around the RGB keyboard. This laptop is perfect mix of performance, design, and price. I found it the best bang for the buck on Cyber Monday at $1400. However, I would probably buy it for slightly higher cost too. It is definitely worth it. Just take my advice on the extra stick of RAM if you get one with a single stick. You can check how many sticks in windows task manager in the performance section. I am loving my laptop and hope you all will too! ... show more
