  • Blazing fast laptop, great build quality, a few bugs
Capacity: 16GB RAM I 1TB SSD Style: 17.3" FHD
The media could not be loaded. UPDATE - 4/06/2022: 7 months is all it took for the MediaTek WiFi card in this laptop to completely die. I took the laptop apart, removed the battery and the WiFi card, and power cycled it. This brought the card back to life long enough for me to re-install the drivers on it, and then kaput it went again. The only reason I can type this from the laptop is because I'm using my phone to USB-Tether WiFi. I went ahead and ordered an Intel AX210 card as a replacement for $35. Knocking a star off. First things first: Why did I buy this laptop? I'm a college student who also happens to be a gamer and a video editor. I used to have a nice gaming desktop but I wanted to go mobile. I'm an enthusiast and I like high performance at a good price point. That's when I landed on this sucker. I managed to get it right at retail for $1799, although it took a minute to get here, it was well worth the wait. Let's dive in! Build Quality: This is probably one of the sturdiest laptops I've ever bought. There's a lot of finished metal and it's aesthetically pleasing. Hinges are nice and firm. There's tons of vents and speaker holes strategically positioned to maximize cooling and sound. LEDs on the keyboard are decent but you can see the RGBs inside if you set it to white and look close enough. Not a big deal but it's noticeable, giving the white setting on the keyboard a slight rainbow hue. I've also had some issues getting the microphone to work properly and Cortana can't recognize me anymore but that's also trivial. Battery Life: If you have iGPU mode on or set to Auto, the system does a great job at making sure the RTX 3070 is off and the Radeon integrated is running. This will give you a long battery life (I've seen like 6-8+ hours on iGPU mode, and 3-4 while using the RTX 3070 a lot). Not bad at all. Screen: I absolutely love this panel. 300Hz IPS 1080p panel. It's so freakin' smooth, I'm so glad I bought this variant over the RTX 3060 144Hz one. Text is crisp and sharp, images are clear, and the gaming experience is great even though it's not a 4K panel. Gaming: Please note that this model comes with the RTX 3070 130W variant, which is the most powerful Laptop 3070 on the market. I've had a very good experience gaming with this laptop so far. Almost any game is able to run at 1080p Ultra, minus RDR2, where you might have to switch it down to medium-high to not drop below 60fps. Still, really impressive for a laptop. My 3dMark benchmarks are also posted on this review, settings were ran at stock clocks for CPU and GPU, while fan setting was set to Turbo preset. Time Spy was also run at recommended setting and never dropped below 50fps that I observed. Testing out the Sims 4, I was able to run 1080p Ultra at 100+fps consistently. TABS (Totally Accurate Battle Simulator) was also able to achieve 100+fps on 1080p Ultra consistently. I haven't messed with overclocking much, but I was able to get +100mhz on the GPU core and memory without any issues. I was also able to hook up my Oculus Quest 2 to the Laptop and play Phasmophobia pretty consistently. There was only one instance in game where my fps dropped considerably, but I'm thinking it had to do with background tasks running behind the scenes. Benchmarks/Cooling: There's tons of ventilation on this thing to provide a lot of cooling. Setting the fan preset to Turbo, I ran the CPU stress test on OCCT 64-bit. Temperatures on the CPU didn't increase past 97°C, which isn't too bad considering this CPU (Ryzen 9 5900HX) is rated at a Thermal Max of 105°C. So yes, this is a laptop and will run hot (I also do not have a cooling pad yet) but it will most definitely operate within its parameters. Software: This part is a little bit goofy but it isn't enough to take away a star just because this laptop is so good. Armoury crate hasn't given me any issues so far, and MyASUS hasn't either, but there is a serious problem in which the OEM software on here interacts with Windows in sleep/wake cycles. The laptop has serious trouble actually going to sleep (pulsing power light) and will continue to run with the SSD light blinking and operating, even though the laptop is closed and the screen is off. Even if I can finally get it to sleep, plugging/unplugging the charger will WAKE IT UP. WHY?!?!? That's the only thing about this laptop that seriously frustrates me, so I usually just end up powering it down completely. Even going into advanced power settings to turn off wake timers won't work because the option is COMPLETELY GONE from the menu. I hope there will be a fix for this in a future update. All in all this is a seriously good laptop with a lot of customization of the table with the keyboard and fan options to choose from, as well as iGPU power saving or full throttle. If you can snag this for retail (which is $1799) definitely go for it! ... show more

  • Very good value laptop for Deep Learning in 2022, also good for video and music watching
Capacity: 16GB RAM I 1TB SSD Style: 17.3" FHD
I am not a gamer. I bought this laptop to do small sample size deep learning training for transformer language models. I use cloud GPU and TPU for the main training with full sample size. But I really wanted to have something locally to run fine tuning and debugging with smaller sample sizes. I was OK just using the cloud for image deep learning, but language models get truly huge! I haven’t trained anything yet, but I’m really excited to test it out. NVIDIA RTX 3070 or 3070 Ti seems to be the sweet spot for a reasonable cost vs performance in June 2022. I also though about a desktop, but got tired of waiting for GPU prices for desktops to come down. One thing I was concerned about was the screen being FHD and not QHD and brightness only 300 nits. But the quality is excellent anyway and colors pop for Netflix and video watching. Pixels can be seen, but images are still very smooth. QHD will be better, but it cost $600 more for a similar laptop. Fan noise, heat, were pleasant surprise when running office type tasks. CPU temp was 50 C, body was luke warm, and fan was silent. Track pad is very smooth. Keys are springy and comfortable and not too loud. Audio is excellent too. Speakers are good quality on music and very loud. Headphone jack output is of high quality and can drive all of your best music. Blue tooth headphone paired easily and sounds OK. Not as good as plugged-in using high quality headset, obviously, but same as usual. This will also make a good media watching device since the screen quality and audio is so nice. Note, there is NO videocam. Can’t do video calling without a plug-in video camera. I already have a USB video cam, but just a reminder. There is a built-in microphone for voice commands, dictation, Cortana. It seems to be a good quality. It pickec up my voice no problem and sounded clear. Update: I trained 200 epoch transformer language model, text generation task (Francois Cholet, 2nd ed, chapter 12 part 1). It took half the time per epoch as free tier Google Colab GPU. I thought it will be slower, maybe take 50-100% longer per epoch. Was pleasantly surprised. Now I can run all Colab free tier GPU/TPU training on my laptop locally, which is much easier than moving large data and model files around. Also I hate editing Jupyter notebook directly on Colab, which can seriously lag when a lot of people are using their services. CPU temps are 85C and GPU temps are 75C during training. I lifted that back up by 2" to help with air flow. I can use manual mode to up the fan to 100% and I can keep it 5% coller during heavy training on GPU/CPU. For light tasks, CPU is 65C and GPU os 0. Fan speed "Windows" seem to keep things quiet and cool at the same time for light tasks. ... show more

  • Great value for the money, but could use a quality check
Capacity: 16GB RAM I 1TB SSD Style: 17.3" FHD
The positives: for $1800 great value. 5900HX plus full 130 watts RTX 3070. Perform similar to my desktop gtx 1080ti at 1440p, but 1080p is little behind. I think maybe it’s the cpu. My desktop 9900k is still faster. The 5900hx average at 4.3 GHz during gaming. CPU temperatures max peak is 90 degrees and average around 80 or lower. Gpu average 78. Elevate the laptop and temps will lower 3 more degrees. Screen is bright and colorful. The chassis is smaller which made it looked like a 15” laptop. The fan is not as loud and the chassis is warm but not hot when gaming. The negatives: nvidia Optimus with no mux switch. Depends on the game, expect a performance hit. The only way to bypass Optimus is use an external monitor with usb-c to DisplayPort cable. Built in hdmi port is also lock with Optimus. No Kensington lock hole. No web cam. RGB bar. The reason I returned it. After a couple weeks of light usage and gaming. I started to notice the gpu frequency randomly won’t go higher than 800 mHz. I did some investigation and found that almost 90% of the time when I first boot up the laptop. All games and benchmark the gpu frequency is lower than 800mhz and the power of the gpu was only below 60 watts. It requires a reboot, not a shut down, to fix the problem. I check bios, windows power management, asus fan settings and everything was normal or no settings available to fix the problem. Please see the picture. I could settle with this laptop with the above negatives. At the time of writing, the value of this laptop is unbeatable. But the above problem is just unacceptable. I would still recommend this laptop, but make sure you test out everything. ... show more

  • Good but with some idiotic design decisions.
Capacity: 16GB RAM I 1TB SSD Style: 17.3" FHD
Would be 5/5 if not for the fact that the function key lights only light the random symbols that ASUS put on them not the actual F1 through F12 that I care about.
