I bought this for my CAD classes mainly, and coming from an old, slow Dell g5 15 5590 with a core i7-9750h, this laptop is amazing and a breath of fresh air. Fast load times, good build quality and could be considered a replacement for my gaming desktop (although I still prefer to game on my desktop). While Asus products are generally reliable (I've bought a motherboard, a gaming mouse and several of their Nvidia gpus and never had a problem), their Achilles heel tends to be their Armoury Crate software suite, which is why you should have the uninstallation tool saved to a flash drive just in case. ... show more

I bought this Asus laptop as a high school graduation gift for my son, who will be double-majoring in AI and mechanical engineering in college this fall. The CPU is one of the most powerful mobile products available right now. My son said that the GPU produces better gaming framerates than his desktop. He likes the keyboard, the trackpad numberpad and RGB lighting. The 240Hz display is highres, bright and vibrant. Despite its power, the laptop is not very heavy for a powerful gaming laptop with excellent cooling. My son is a big, strong athlete so the size and weight of the notebook is no problem for him to carry around campus, but smaller people, particularly women, might find it a little heavy to carry all day. I would go lower but I do not think this is a vendor issue, might be just a lemon, the product arrived used, the USBC worked intermittently, then the day I went to wipe the drive for return it would not recognize the drive and went strait to bios, repeated this many times without positive results. I think like cars it was just a lemon or at least I hope they didn’t know it was this bad and tried to pawn it off on someone. Will update after return is processed ... show more

Conclusion upfront: I am not in any position to validate whether this is a better or best deal for the money. Laptops across the board are irrationally underwhelming. But at best and worst this is a middling showing. I can't practically find a 'better' laptop outside of spontaneous discounts, but that being the case and the landscape so universally disappointing, my conclusion is to find those spontaneous deep discounts first. This is actually a perfectly serviceable and functional laptop - but you may have to work for it out the door. Severe concern in the Closing. But there are some truly baffling design decisions at work here in the Strix G16 (2025) AMD platforms. 2560x1600 screen resolution on such a tiny display is a large question mark. Certainly the lower dotpitch makes for smoother detail in video games - which is largely the point of this laptop - but more so than HDR? Or maybe OLED with 'instant' pixel response and black frame insertion benefiting motion clarity? There are a bunch of options here yet none are present. For desktop use it is all but required to use resolution scaling, which functionally produces 1920x1200 desktop real-estate. Granting, there are few OLED at 1920 worth mentioning, (nor at such small scale). I'm just saying, the display is simultaneously overkill and underkill. Not what I would consider quite fit-for-purpose. This screen services almost no one. Weird! Second... why the older generation chassis and cooling? How much is Intel paying you for the newer (apparently quite better) thermal solution? Couldn't do the same for AMD? How about Nvidia, where the GPU can be kneecapped by the thermals? What's that? A 5070ti isn't going to be thermal throttled? Fair enough, but that 9955HX is sure as hell going to be kneecapped by a 5070ti mobile (read underclocked 5070). My use case favors raw CPU more often than not, so it's a fair trade. It's just weird! So why not just buy the Intel variant? I do not trust Intel. Even their latest (at the time) 200 series CPUs were subject to yet-another branch prediction exploit. Small, but these are persistent security failures. I'm not putting money on a vendor that is so clearly willing to trade my security for slightly improved first-month-benchmarks. Not that I feel much better about giving money to Asus at this point, but more to come. More to my point my use case simply favors AMD. So all I can say is 'weird. VERY weird'. And Win 11 Home? So much for a premium product brand. What does Strix stand for? How much are those pro Win OEM licenses these days? I dunno Asus's margins or anything, but couldn't pressure your vendors (Microsoft) to facilitate you better features to your customers. Not like Microsoft has been hemorrhaging trust since before the release of Win11. Nah, just pass it on to the consumer. It clearly worked. I read the product description. I knew I was getting into. I could have paid (80$) extra. Yes I would otherwise expect more from your premium 'Strix' product line than entry level. You know, assuming your Strix branding is going to mean anything. The brand didn't mean anything to me. I don't care; there is merely 0 top end laptop CPUs outside of the these 'premium' product categories. I'm stuck in the same situation as ever other vendor. But if your marketing team is going to peacock like Strix means anything, then deliver. Else save the money for your customers by discarding your marketing department for being bloated and useless, not unlike your preinstalled Asus softoware. More in the Closing. Now, credit where it is due, the price for the hardware wasn't so bad (at the time) and the hinges on these G16s are among the few I can find without a tidal wave of hinge failure complaints. The only other laptop I have encountered out of dozens of models and manufacturers alike that still has surviving hinges is a (very old) Asus laptop. So I will grant credit here preemptively where this is otherwise such a disappointing demonstration with the software and somewhat dubious platform decisions. Rest assured, if the day every comes these hinges fail the review tanks to absolutely nothing and I never touch an Asus product ever again. Certainly not their premium Strix brand, because that is of dubious merit and would be of zero value if it didn't even afford even the planed obsolesces of failing hinges. Clock's ticking. Closing: Worst of this product is Asus's suite of preinstalled software garbage. Every laptop vendor is going to saturate on this front. It is expected. We all just deal with it, because this market doesn't look like a cartel or anything. Granting Asus more credit where it is due: the lot of their software is very much piece-meal. It is truly easy to eliminate it part by part. in the case where you as the user do genuinely like -or object- to only one or two components it is possible to keep what you want, uninstall what you don't. That is legitimately nice. Given every single vendor will drown us in bloatware no matter what, it certainly could be worse. Oh, but unfortunately it IS worse. I had occasional - but persistent - system shutdowns until I ripped the entirety of Asus bloatware out with Revo Uninstaller. Elaborating for Asus support that might read particularly poor reviews : Behavior: all peripherals cease to function whether added or integrated. The system would otherwise continue to operate normally, absent accepting any peripheral inputs. Videos would play. Messaging/Email would update and respond when windows were in the foreground to observe. Display and desktop all looking normal. Eventually (2 or 3 minutes after losing peripherals) the entire system would restart. Event viewer showed nothing meaningful beyond unexpected shutdown/power loss suggesting a failure at either the CPU, or power delivery (battery/Power supply). Hardware load made no difference. The device would happily run at max power draw on all components without fault for hours on end. Light desktop work? It wasn't necessarily frequent. Not quite enough to prompt immediate RMA. But it was very close, and just enough for me to troubleshoot the matter for my own benefit. Be glad I didn't trouble your support staff. No, I will not figure out which of your software is the offender. Now, - after all of Asus' software is gone and for absolutely no reason at all - the laptop is perfectly stable. Imagine that? Doesn't stop Asus Armory Crate from trying to reinstall itself despite (presumably) disabling that 'feature' in the BIOS. But the BIOS does seem to have gotten the picture and respecting that setting in recent weeks. My guess is an actual restart of windows was required over the normal hibernate-like 'shutdown'. Thanks Microsoft. But whatever. I did not sign up for such concerning instability. There may remain a unique hardware fault waiting to creep up on me probably toward the end of warranty; but that day is not today. Anyway, since I imagine only Asus reps are reading this far along, the low score is partly to get your attention. I'm leaning 3*, because I know my experience would basically be identical regardless of whom delivered the same hardware. Realistically, this is hardly worse than a completely mediocre product at the price point. You doing everything everyone else is doing. Everything everyone else is doing is mediocre, so why make your premium brand premium? Nah... I am a long time Asus customer and you used to not do this.e I am still (happily) running an old Crosshair VI Hero AM4 platform as a server. Thanks for keeping that platform well supported to the extent AMD maintained their AGESA. It wasn't even Strix. That's confidence building. Features and quality across a full product line, and the price very much competitive. I've moved on to other motherboards in recent builds. You haven't offered the same value, even if the support remains the same. No favoritism here. Just credit where its due. But I've had poor experiences with your more recent products - not the least of which being this laptop. Mediocrity. You happened to roughly be the best price for the exact hardware I was shopping for. But after using the device, I am no longer so sure the presumed value was worth the price of admission. I didn't even go in with high expectations and I was still disappointed. Maybe I'll feel better in 5 years if the hinges survive. Being 100% serious if that is the ONLY advantage you have over competitors is is significant... you just have to wait 5 years for me to amend my review. This thing has been nothing but trouble. Microsoft is a tremendous part of that. I would have an enormous confidence boost in your product if you refunded me the entire cost of the windows license. I'm not begging, I'm using the severity to illustrate how serious you must push back on your vendor, because Microsoft's products are now so bad they are absolutely costing you consumer confidence.
