2/6/2018 Haven't updated this review in awhile, but just wanted to say that this laptop is still going strong. This model is getting kinda long in the tooth now, but I am still able to play The Division, Destiny 2 and FortNite at 60 FPS with the appropriate settings. You definitely won't be running these games on Ultra settings, but it will still look as good as, or better, than the same game on console. Additionally, I use Datacolor's Spyder5 to color calibrate my screen. I do monthly tests of the color calibration, and in the 1.5 years that I've had this laptop, I have not had to re-calibrate the monitor. It has held true to my original calibration. 10/18/2016 This Laptop can run Gears of war 4. I'll add screenshots of the benchmark test. On recommended settings, it runs at an average framerate of 45.9 FPS. On ULTRA settings, you will average 29 FPS. 9/11/2016 I played through the game "Firewatch" with graphics on Ultra for about 95% of the time. There is one part in the game where there are a lot of particle effects (smoke) and i had frames dropping every now and then, so i set the graphics to High for this one part. 9/6/2016 I just received this laptop last week, so here is my preliminary review. First of all, since there are different versions for sale, I will state that i have the 4 GB VRAM and 128GB SSD version of this product. I also upgraded Windows 10 Home edition to Windows 10 Education edition (via an upgrade option thru my university). Before using this machine, i followed the advice of others and immediately updated the Intel and NVIDIA graphics drivers and uninstalled the ASUS Game First software. CONS: -The power button is in the top right where the delete key should be. This is beyond annoying. EDIT: search cortana for "Change what the Power button does" I changed mine to "do nothing." Now if i accidentally hit the power button, the laptop will not go to sleep. This only affects tapping the button, you can still hold the button down for several seconds to force shut off the computer, and tapping the button while the computer is asleep will wake it up. -There is no Num Lock indicator -The plastic is a fingerprint magnet, but they seem to wipe off easily (and asus provides you with a polish cloth) PROS: -This PC is fast! it boots up in seconds with a SSD -The screen is bright and sharp -It runs Photoshop and Lightroom simultaneously with no problems -I have not had the Bluetooth/WiFi issues that others have had (knock on wood) -Build is pretty solid. The lid is aluminum, and the rest of the machine is a pretty heavy plastic. It's not flimsy at all. Definitely not as hard as a Dell Latitude (or comparable business class desktop), but it is stouter than anything you would pick up at a big box store. -The touchpad feels "fast" to me, and i like that. I came from a Dell with actual buttons below the touchpad, so i having to get used to clicking/right clicking with this touchpad, but there's nothing wrong with it, just different for me. -The keyboard is quick, snappy, and the adjustable back lighting is great. I haven't had the chance to play any games on it yet, but will update this post once I do. However, many other reviewers have played games, and left solid reviews, so i don't forsee any issues. Great laptop for the price

Nice gaming computer. This computer is fast. I play wow and the frame rates are great. No lag, loading time is fast and the graphics are awesome. Of course its not turned up full, but its alot better than the mac I had before. Programs run almost instantly. The one thing I dont like and its not the laptops fault, is Windows 10. It still seems a bit buggy to me. The keyboard lights up red, but does shut off when you are not typing after a few minutes. The speakers could be louder. There is a cd drive. The track pad took awhile to get use to. If you don't click exactly in the middle, it doesnt recognize a single click. I'm not sure if it's just mine or not. Right click is tricky. I have to go in the far lower right corner to do that. The track pad does not feel flimsy at all. I just had a bit of a learning curve with it. It boots up super fast and your drives are divided into 2. There is a data drive, for all your big files, etc. and a smaller one which I am assuming is just for the essentials. All in all I bought it for gaming, nothing hardcore and its working fine for me. ... show more

powerful, works great for photoshop and other intense programs - DOES NOT support 2 monitors

I am a programmer and graphic designer so I use this computer with programs such as photoshop, dreamweaver, cuteftp, illustrator, premier, etc. I chose to upgrade from my 2 year old Asus because it couldn't handle tons of programs open at once despite the large memory since adobe's latest Creative suite was launched. This was great because it can handle a large (24" x 36" 350 dpi) complex photoshop file open while 5 other photoshop files and at least 7 other programs are opened at once. I do not have to wait on this computer, it handles all requests fast which is a nice relief. The specs on this computer were awesome and they truly do not disappoint. I have been been an Asus user for the last 8 years so I am used to their keyboard layout and they don't bother me. My last Asus had a touchscreen which I miss when I'm traveling, but not waiting on the computer to complete complex tasks is worth the trade off. There is a major flaw, however, for my setup. I use this on my desk 95% of the time and have a nice 2 monitor setups going. I assumed this had the same mini display port and HDMI setup that the previous Asus laptops have however they REMOVED the mini display port and replace it with a usb-c port. Okay, no big deal, however their usb-c port doesn't support display drivers like most others do. This means you can't just get an adapter and use it for a second monitor. I was going to give it 1 star after this as it seemed like a bad design decision on their part and made it useless to me as my work computer. After I calmed down and found a workaround I just decided to dock 1 star. I did need to invest another $100 into a usb3 dock that supported display ports Anker Dual Display Universal Docking Station with DVI/HDMI (up to 2048 x 1152), Audio, Gigabit Ethernet, 6 USB ports (2 USB 3.0 + 4 USB 2.0), 38W Adapter, Supports Surface Pro / 2 / 3 and more . This did allow my to use the usb3 port on the computer to support the second monitor in the end, however I still feel like they should have put in a usb-c port that could support display drivers if they were going to replace the display port with it. In the end I would make this purchase again - this computer is a workhorse that can handle anything I throw at it so far. Very happy with the power. ... show more

I did about three weeks of solid research on which computer I wanted to buy. I wanted to be able to do all of my school work, and create as well as play video games. I kept landing on this computer, it had all of the necessary specs for a very decent price. The first thing I did, naturally, was test out all of my favorite games - Skyrim, Elder Scrolls Online, and Fallout 4. Each one runs beautifully. I can run Skyrim with the graphics settings on Ultra without any mods added in (the more mods the more I found I needed to lower my graphics settings, but that's a small sacrifice - even on low the graphics are beautiful), Fallout plays perfectly on low and still looks amazing, I can play it on high or ultra but it does sacrifice quite a few frames per second so I prefer to stay on the lower end. The speaker quality isn't amazing but I didn't really buy the computer for music, and I generally am using my headphones if I'm playing a game or listening to music anyway. Now one complaint that I do have, which isn't THAT big of a deal but still is a little bit annoying is that if I close/shut down my computer before taking the headphones out there will be no sound coming from the speakers until I plug my headphones back in and take them out again. Again, not that big of an issue. I can deal with it, but it is a little bit irritating to have a hardware issue like that since even though this computer is relatively inexpensive considering its specs it's still by no means a cheap computer. The screen is also a little bit flimsy (I did get the metallic version and the screen still had quite a bit of give to it) so I just make sure I'm very gentle handling it and keep it as far away from my toddler as possible. It worked fine for 2 months

I bought this laptop on June 23rd. It worked fine for 2 months, but the flimsy power button stopped working after that. The reason I'm writing this review is because of the horrific RMA process I'm currently experiencing. I called ASUS to get a repair on the laptop. The person handling my case was extremely rude and tells me he can't do anything because his system is down. Not a network outage, just him.. This guy did not have the common sense to just transfer me to someone else, and I had to call back for a different person. The entire process of getting an RMA number took 2 hours. Finally, I ship it in. It arrives and gets "fixed" and shipped back to me the same day. Sounds great right? I get it about a week later, and the day after, it breaks down again.. with the exact same issue! They didn't fix anything. I call back again, because this should have been fixed the first time. I ask for an exchange, because I was told if they fail to fix it the first time, they'll exchange it for me. They refuse and tells me to ship it back again so they can see if it's repairable. Well guess what, you "fixed" it the first time, and didn't actually change anything. How would I know you won't simply "fix" it again!?! But hey, I don't have a choice, so I accept the fact that I have to ship it back again for them to give me the run around, but guess what, their system is down again. I have to call back later... WOW, freaking unbelievable. I bought this laptop 3 months ago, and it's worked for 2/3 of the time. If you buys this, I hope you get a working one, because otherwise you'll go through this exact s***ty process I am. I honestly bought it because I've bought Asus products in the past. But not anymore in the future. EDIT AS OF 10/14/2016: What a joke. I received a shipping label due to a "system error" after my phone call, where they tell me they can't provide a new RMA number with the system being down. I send the laptop in with the ground shipping label, which takes about a week to arrive after being told that I can just call them when it arrives and be issued a new RMA number. It finally arrives today on 10/14, and I call Asus, only to be told by the rep that they can't give me a RMA number. Not only that, they can't locate my package and gives me a whole bunch of BS about how they are seeing different numbers in their system?? What a joke. I ask to be sent a replacement unit, because at this point, the RMA process has almost taken a month, and they say no can do. So what the hell should I do.. Great Overall Laptop - Requires some work upon arrival

As of this writing, I've had this laptop for about three weeks. It's been great so far, and I shall summarize the main points I have about this product below. PROS: - Incredibly powerful specs for its price. This thing can run anything I've thrown at it so far, and it can multitask easily, although I haven't run any incredibly demanding programs on it yet. - The SSD is worth it. I left only the OS on it to prevent it from becoming clogged, and the startup time is literally seconds because of it. - The battery life is decent considering the power of this machine. If used for gaming, you would want it plugged in anyway, and I've found it can last up to five hours if placed on power saver for simple web browsing and such. - I live in a very dusty area, and I haven't faced the fingerprint problem others have mentioned. It also ships with a small cleaning cloth. - I had this product shipped internationally via a 3rd party shipping company, and it was packaged well by Amazon and was not damaged on the trip. CONS: - This is the most important point, and why there are many negative reviews here. The graphics card drivers pre-installed on this laptop are for Windows 8, and this laptop is shipped as Windows 10. This can lead to black screens and crashes if not addressed immediately. Upon setting up the laptop, you must go to the Nvidia website and download the latest drivers available. The built-in program can not be used for this initial install, but it will update automatically after that. i didn't face any of these crashes myself, but I suspect this is the main reason others have. Check other reviews for a more detailed description of how to do this. - As mentioned above, the battery life isn't amazing while doing heavy work, lasting approx. two hours. - I understand that the SSD could be bought separately and installed for a cheaper price, but I personally wasn't in the mood for the hassle. - The power button is a normal key on the top right of the keyboard. This hasn't affected me, but it may annoy others. - Some bloatware is pre-installed, but this is normal and it is easily removed. Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase, and I would recommend it to anyone who can get around the initial setup. ... show more

Edited Aug. 3, 2016 to down mark from 4 stars to 2. Initially, this laptop met all my expectations. However, I am now on my second unit in less than 5 weeks. Amazon issued a replacement for me after I started having issues with the wireless adapter turning itself off and not being recognized. I had to go in, reset the adapter and then restart the laptop. When this issue continued happening, I contacted Asus support and was taken through everything from deleting the drivers and reinstalling all the way through doing a clean install of the OS. The problem persisted and at that point Asus wanted me to send it in for repair. Since the first laptop was less than a month old, I contacted Amazon and they issued the replacement. I have had the replacement less than a week and you guessed it. The same problem happened today. This time I called Asus and was given the same options. Sorry, but when the problem occurs on two different machines, I have little faith that sending it to Asus will fix the problem, especially when the tech I was speaking with was not aware of there being issues with the adapter. Once the first machine makes it back to Amazon, I shall be contacting them to see what my options are. I have been a loyal Asus customer but this has made me wonder if I need to rethink my loyalty to the brand. I waited until I had used this laptop for a month before writing the review. This is a solid gaming laptop for what you pay. However, there are some cons that prevent me from giving it 5-stars. Pros: The SSD makes for very quick start-up. Laptop runs quietly and does not appear to have an overheating problem. Graphics card handles the games I play very well. I have had no problem with Fallout 4, Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, Dragon Age: Inquisition, etc. Keyboard feels solid. Cons: There are a few things with the keyboard that are bothersome. There is no dedicated "end" button. You have to use keyboard shortcuts instead. Also, the power button is located on the keyboard where the "end" button often is. This can lead to inadvertent shutdowns. In order for some of my games to work properly, I had to install the beta version of Nvidia GeForce Experience. Fortunately, there was information in different online communities explaining what the problem and workaround was. I also had a major issue with the wireless adapter not only turning itself off but removing the adapter from active devices. While ASUS customer support was helpful, it still took several emails to correct. I initially updated all drivers and then had to delete and reinstall the drivers, etc. What finally seemed to fix the issue -- and I am still holding my breath to see if it has -- was a reinstall of the OS. Needless to say, I was not happy having to do that, especially after having finally set the rig up the way I wanted it. All that said, now that the rig appears to be working properly, it is a solid rig. I would have preferred the driver and OS problem have been solved BEFORE purchase. I ordered this laptop after having problems with a different ASUS model. I chose it because it had similar features to the one I wanted, but a different cooling schematic (which had been the problem on the other model). My initial reaction was very positive. This is a very fast machine with almost no startup time. It has a solid state primary drive and a large terabyte regular HDD, so I was able to put all my files on the latter while running most of my programs on the former. Though it's a high-powered gaming laptop, it's also very portable in design. It was everything I wanted in a computer - portable but with power to run memory-intensive programs and games. Unfortunately after about a week of use it started to develop some small bugs and other glitches. The first had to do with the battery draining itself very quickly even though I had the machine in (what I though was) sleep mode. I closed the lid at about 95% battery, came back 2 hours later, and it was down at 20%. So something was obviously still running. I think I got around most of those issues by changing the sleep settings, but then another issue emerged. The screen started just randomly going dark (albeit with the backlight still on) while I was typing. The screen came back by just hitting the function key and F7, but still - it's an totally unnecessary glitch. It wasn't happening very often - maybe once every 3-4 hours. But it was enough to be annoying...so I called tech support, and spent an hour on the phone with them as I individually uninstalled and reinstalled all the graphics drivers. I think (read: hope) the issue is finally solved, but I'm also concerned that some other users have reported similar things and there seems to be no clear fix for it. In any case, this SHOULD NOT HAPPEN to a brand new computer. I'm sufficiently annoyed that if it happens again and I don't have a fix within the next few days that I'll be doing yet another return to ASUS...and then switching brands. I really really don't want to do that because (a) I love everything else about this laptop and (b) it's a giant pain in the you know what to keep swapping them out. UPDATE 11/27/16: The random black screen issue continued after the driver reinstall, so I called ASUS tech support again and was instructed to do a clean install of Windows. I did this 4 days ago and I haven't had the problem since then. Fingers crossed that this fixes it for good. I'll update on any other developments. Here's my assessment of the good & bad as it currently stands: PROS: - Very fast machine for the price - SSD is great - almost instant startup and access to files on it. Games run seamless off of it - 1TB secondary hard drive - more than adequate to store photos, movies, and run some games - 16GB DDRM is more than adequate, but upgradable to 32GB in second slot - Removable battery pack - means I don't have to open it up when the thing goes bad eventually in a couple years - Quiet dual fan cooling system that you barely even notice - Relatively light for a gaming laptop - about 4-5 lbs CONS: - The aforementioned random screen shutoff thing was a pain to deal with. Seems to be software related, but it took a week of headaches to resolve. - Battery is smaller than most laptops. Still good for about 4 hours of power with moderate app use. - Comes pre-installed with lots of bloatware - all the Wildtangent crap, off-brand music managers & PDF readers, trial packages trying to get you to buy their cloud storage services, and crappy ASUS software to get you to download even more bloatware galore. I probably recovered 5GB of SSD space just cleaning out the garbage - Not really ASUS's fault, but Windows 10 sucks. Especially Cortana. But Windows 10 really sucks. UPDATE 2: 12/4 The clean reset of Windows seems to have fixed the main issue I was having with the random screen blackouts. But now a new issue has emerged: random battery drain when the laptop is disconnected from the plug. Something about the way the computer is configured seems to make it interact strangely with Windows 10's sleep & hibernate features. Every other laptop I've owned has retained most of its battery when in sleep mode and almost all when in hibernate mode. Instead, this one seems to discharge it - including very rapidly. I put my laptop in what I thought was sleep mode for less than an hour as it was unplugged. When I opened the screen again the battery had discharged from 95% to about 30%! That's a faster discharge than the computer itself is supposed to go through if I was using it on battery power to surf the web or something. I called ASUS tech support (again) and their unhelpful technician's only suggestions were (1) do yet another clean install of Windows or (2) mail it to them for service. I'm uninterested in even more back & forth on this computer, including multiple hours wasted on reinstalls and tech support for a product that was supposed to be functional out of the box. It's a real shame because, aside from all these bizarre glitches I keep having, I really do like the computer's features & capabilities. So here's the deal - I'm at the point that I'm going to try to address the battery issue with Windows 10's power settings to see if I can figure out what the drain is and how to shut it off. If I can't, or if any more of these ridiculous issues keep coming up, then it's back to the returns department and try again with a different brand of computer. UPDATE 3: 12/9 I think I FINALLY have this machine figured out. I played around with the power settings. The trick is to set it to automatically go into hibernate mode after a time limit when the machine is unplugged and running on battery. There's still a huge design flaw and/or something wrong with how this machine interacts with Windows 10, because it should not discharge its entire battery in an hour while in sleep mode. But hibernate does the trick, and since it's an SSD it takes almost zero time to wake it back up. Praying that there are no more bugs that emerge, because otherwise I really do like the machine and what it is capable of - both in games and general operating speed + features. ... show more
