  • Good and Fast machine for the price!
Style: 1TB+128GB SSD | Nvidia GTX 960M w 4GB VRAM
2/6/2018 Haven't updated this review in awhile, but just wanted to say that this laptop is still going strong. This model is getting kinda long in the tooth now, but I am still able to play The Division, Destiny 2 and FortNite at 60 FPS with the appropriate settings. You definitely won't be running these games on Ultra settings, but it will still look as good as, or better, than the same game on console. Additionally, I use Datacolor's Spyder5 to color calibrate my screen. I do monthly tests of the color calibration, and in the 1.5 years that I've had this laptop, I have not had to re-calibrate the monitor. It has held true to my original calibration. 10/18/2016 This Laptop can run Gears of war 4. I'll add screenshots of the benchmark test. On recommended settings, it runs at an average framerate of 45.9 FPS. On ULTRA settings, you will average 29 FPS. 9/11/2016 I played through the game "Firewatch" with graphics on Ultra for about 95% of the time. There is one part in the game where there are a lot of particle effects (smoke) and i had frames dropping every now and then, so i set the graphics to High for this one part. 9/6/2016 I just received this laptop last week, so here is my preliminary review. First of all, since there are different versions for sale, I will state that i have the 4 GB VRAM and 128GB SSD version of this product. I also upgraded Windows 10 Home edition to Windows 10 Education edition (via an upgrade option thru my university). Before using this machine, i followed the advice of others and immediately updated the Intel and NVIDIA graphics drivers and uninstalled the ASUS Game First software. CONS: -The power button is in the top right where the delete key should be. This is beyond annoying. EDIT: search cortana for "Change what the Power button does" I changed mine to "do nothing." Now if i accidentally hit the power button, the laptop will not go to sleep. This only affects tapping the button, you can still hold the button down for several seconds to force shut off the computer, and tapping the button while the computer is asleep will wake it up. -There is no Num Lock indicator -The plastic is a fingerprint magnet, but they seem to wipe off easily (and asus provides you with a polish cloth) PROS: -This PC is fast! it boots up in seconds with a SSD -The screen is bright and sharp -It runs Photoshop and Lightroom simultaneously with no problems -I have not had the Bluetooth/WiFi issues that others have had (knock on wood) -Build is pretty solid. The lid is aluminum, and the rest of the machine is a pretty heavy plastic. It's not flimsy at all. Definitely not as hard as a Dell Latitude (or comparable business class desktop), but it is stouter than anything you would pick up at a big box store. -The touchpad feels "fast" to me, and i like that. I came from a Dell with actual buttons below the touchpad, so i having to get used to clicking/right clicking with this touchpad, but there's nothing wrong with it, just different for me. -The keyboard is quick, snappy, and the adjustable back lighting is great. I haven't had the chance to play any games on it yet, but will update this post once I do. However, many other reviewers have played games, and left solid reviews, so i don't forsee any issues. Overall, I would definitely recommend this laptop, and am pleased with my purchase. ... show more

  • Amazing Computer for the Price.
Style: 1TB+128GB SSD | Nvidia GTX 960M w 4GB VRAM
This computer fully lives up to its promise, powerful, plenty of memory, clear crisp display, nice keyboard (back lighting is a plus). I have not timed the battery, but it is lasting about 4 hours. Start up is fairly fast as expected with the SSD. I am not a gamer, so I cannot provide any insight in that arena. Styling is always a matter of taste, I really like the design and layout. There are a few cons, not enough to drop my rating, but worth sharing. It is a bit of a fingerprint magnet - not horrible, but noticeable. Sometimes gets a little warm on my lap, but never hot (fan is quiet, but can be heard in a quiet room). Lacks a dedicated insert key, annoying for us 'shift-ins' guys. The back lighting on the keyboard is not activated on login screen, so you have to key your password in blindly. It has three USB ports, but all ports are on the sides, at risk for getting bumped when used on a lap. A few warnings about the ASUS gift box. A nice idea, you get to choose the bloatware you want installed rather than uninstalling it. I made the mistake of selecting Dashlane, and FoxIt PDF. Dashlane is a password manager and I quickly got tired of the popups and uninstalled it. It only partially uninstalled and then I was getting exceptions when I shut down the machine. Had to do a factory reset to clear that up. FoxIt PDF sounds nice, but one of its 'features' is to crash Windows Explorer whenever you right click on a file. Don't bother. ASUS also includes an online storage program that is far too naggy and had to be uninstalled. Over all,I would definitely buy this machine again and I highly recommend it. ... show more

Style: 1TB+128GB SSD | Nvidia GTX 960M w 4GB VRAM
After 1 year of use, this laptop is still running great, albeit with some issues. The main issue, and the root of many problems is temperature management and overheating issues in the computer. After about 6 months of use, I encountered the problem of, apparently no reason during use, the D drive (hard disk drive) will randomly disconnect while the C drive (solid state drive) remains connected. I attributed this problem to the laptop being overheated during the first 6 months running CPU-intensive programs with no external cooling. To rectify this problem, I bought a cooling pad to put under the computer at home, and limited my use of performance-demanding programs while away from home. This has very much solved the issue, apart from one incident where the hard drive disconnected and reconnected after a restart. The second main issue was that the battery only lasted 10 months before it completely failed on me and refused to hold a charge. This was probably in part to my own negligence of keeping the computer plugged in all the time and only unplugging it when I took the computer to school, only about once a week. But I've owned laptops previously that I treated the same, with no issues regarding the battery emerging. To fix this problem, I could've RMA'd the laptop under warranty, but that process was too demanding and inconvenient, so I just ordered a third-party aftermarket battery with similar specifications. Apart from all these problems, this has been a very good computer, but not necessarily for the price I paid for it. However, if you can get this for a good price, I recommend this with reservations. ... show more
