When it became clear that my HTPC was going to have problems due to the on-board graphics being a legacy chipset that was barely supported and would not output in 16:9 aspect ratio over HDMI, I searched for an inexpensive solution to that problem. The ASUS GeForce 210 was that answer. It has no fan, so it's completely silent (something I value in an HTPC). It has enough power to handle 1080p video and output 5.1 DTS without any hiccups (depending on your CPU, as well, I'd imagine). It's easy to install, supports half-height bays if you have a slim HTPC, and doesn't require any extra power connections. The drivers provided are a bit old, so you'll want to ignore the CD that comes with this and download the latest GeForce drivers for this device. Understand also that this won't work with Nvidia's game optimizing software. In truth, you wouldn't want this for gaming. It can handle some recent games on lowest settings (and still lags) but this is not really a gamers' video card. However, for an HTPC or standard office PC that just needs a replacement for on-board video, this is a step up from some of the legacy onboard chipsets you'll find out there. It does a great job with Kodi, Netflix, Hulu Plus, VLC, and YouTube. I've played 1080p H.264 and HEVC with no issues, and it gets along with my Yamaha receiver and Epson projector, too, which is important in an HTPC graphics card. Bottom line: It does what I expected it to do. It works great for an HTPC and the price was fantastic. If you just need a basic card for HD video, this would be a good choice.

The card installed okay. It didn't come with drivers but they were easy enough to download from NVidia. The card itself, however was pretty trashed. The DDR3 is slow (but I knew that going in) but the fact that my screen would get scrambled multiple times a day was no bueno, for real! All I had to do was reload the game but that's not very convenient. I'm retired and I play that stupid Forge of Empires all day long. It kinda owns me... I replaced my other video card because it had a fan on it and as we all know, video card fans suck - they always go out. I thought I would fix that situation with a new (I thought) video card with no fan on it. It was not a new fan, it was a failed old fan out of someone's old server or whatever. It was not a good purchase. I will pay closer attention to what I'm buying in the future because this was pretty much a waste of money. I can probably use it in a server or something down the line because the video demands of a server computer are very low. It does not work well on a workstation PC, however, if there is going to be any gaming on it at all.

I have an old eMachines 1831 PC running Windows 7 that I am re-purposing as an HTPC, using Windows Media Center to record and replay Time Warner Cable. This card was the last piece of the system - I needed something that could output secure HDMI so that I could replay copy protected content, and I wanted something with no fan (so that it was quieter) and that used as little electricity as possible, especially while idle. The card is everything I could want - it was compatible, easy to install, it's low power and silent, and it is working great with my PC and TV. A couple tips: 1) This unit is fanless - it just has that giant finned heat sink attached to it. It might not fit in thin PCs, and it would be tough to put a card next to it. On the other hand, I love that it has no fan - there are no moving parts to go wrong, and I want my media center PC to be quiet. 2) It's an old card, so I'm sure it wouldn't run most modern games. But again, that's a plus for my purposes - it uses less electricity and produces less heat than a more powerful card. 3) It was able to rum my HDMI TV and my old VGA monitor simultaneously, which was cool, but WMC wouldn't play protected content while I had the unsecure monitor plugged in, so now I'm using the TV as a monitor. 4) I did some googling on similar cards. From what I can tell, the 210 is a little better than the GeForce 8400GS , so I picked the 210 over that. It looks like the Radeon 5450 and 6450 *might* be a little better, but those were pricier and harder to get, so I ultimately chose the 210. So far, no complaints!

On my four year old Dell XPS 8000 Windows 7 machine the GeForce GTS240 was causing BSODs etc, probably due to dust buildup in the fan (I waited too long to take it apart and clean out the dust). I popped this replacement in easily. It took up much less space. My goal was not to upgrade, but just to get my computer working close to the level it was before. Since someone mentioned their Windows Experience score dropping, I checked mine. Graphics increased from 4.8 to 4.9. Gaming graphics stayed at 5.7. Calling the instructions lacking is generous. Luckily you really don't need them. Just disconnect everything, ground yourself, disconnect any power cables to the old card. Remove the screw holding the expansion card cover on the back of the machine, remove the old card - be sure to push the release on the PCIex16 slot. Slide the new card in (there are NO power connections for the new card), screw on the expansion card holder. Hook everything back up, turn on your machine. I did not use the installation disk. Upon booting up (it defaulted to VGA) drivers started downloading immediately and finished in about 5 minutes. The machine then rebooted, and came up in 1900x1200. The system recommended a 250MB download from Nvida. I downloaded the update, and everything is fine. Note I took the opportunity to load a new system battery while the card was out.....this did cause an error on the first boot up I assume because data was lost. The BIOS opened and I reset it. Positives: Easy install. Takes up much less space. No Fan. NO BSODs. No power cables. Negative: The heat sink overlaps one slot, not that I care. I am not a gamer. I use my computer primarily for pictures. It flies through them just as fast as before. As always, if the product fails, I will update the review and downgrade it accordingly. Day 1 11-01-2013.
