Top Amazon Reviews

  • Great specs, but price hikes make it less budget efficient
The product I bought was the Asus F556UA-AS54. First off, I will say I bought this on an Amazon Warehouse deal, at about $460. At the time, it was selling for $559 new. The laptop and its packaging were flawless, and it turns out that the "Cosmetic Damage >5%" meant that the laptop was silver, not champagne. Bonus for me. Now to the actual review. I've been using this laptop frequently for about a month now, and I'm in love with it. It is definitely light, comparing it to Dells of the same size and even smaller Macbooks Pros. The Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga (13") does beat it, though. It doesn't put much extra weight on my backpack or laptop bag. Yes, it is a type of plastic construction, but it looks brushed and feels sturdy nonetheless. A neat benefit to the construction is the lack of heat on the chassis. The material doesn't carry much heat, and the cooling system throws any hot air out the back. It stays cool in excess of hours. The speaker placement is iffy, though. Asus likes to brag about their superior speakers, and they aren't totally wrong. They are quite nice, for onboard speakers, with volume at quite an acceptable level and nice clarity. But this is only if you're using your laptop on a flat surface; the speakers are actually on the bottom, just under the user-side edge, about 3 inches in. Odd placement, but table reflection must be part of their sound tech. Its display is a weak point. The viewing angle is rather narrow; but I don't mind that too much, as I prefer seeing difference in contrasts when working on graphic design. Asus's blue filter isn't noticeable to me (colorblind, maybe a factor) but I don't get headaches from it. As far as the lid goes, it is slightly flimsy. It bends/warps just a bit, but it keeps it stays put better than a trained dog. And it's a matte finish, so I don't become an movie star whenever I watch at night. I still use the cloth that came sandwiched between the keyboard and display to protect the display when closed, but it requires fair pressure to make them meet. The F555 silicone keypad might fit, haven't tried. As far as battery life goes, I'm impressed. For video streaming (720p on wifi) I get about 25 minutes for 6%. Light work like browsing, GDocs, and light coding take even less. I'm sure it could be furthur optimized if Windows 10 was more cooperative. It charges nice and quickly, too. I can get a full charge in... about 80 minutes? I haven't really timed that part. The i5 and SSD combo is like a miracle. I boot completely in 10 seconds, sometimes less. Applications open fiendishly fast, and they run great too. I'm astounded by Intel's new processor and graphics; I can run Fallout: New Vegas on high settings with no hiccups. It only gets choppy when realtime dustclouds are paired with lots of AI calculation. Thus far, I've only used more than 4GB of RAM when running Fallout. For my uses, 8GB is plenty, but the option to upgrade to 12 is nice. For connectivity, I'm a little sad. Only 2 standard USB ports are available: One USB 2 (right side) and one USB 3.0 (left side). The USB 3.0 Type C is a nice future-proof feature, but I'm still put out over the loss of standard ports. Bluetooth mice make this forgivable. The Ethernet port is modified to keep a thinner profile, but is still functional. HDMI works well, but I think Win10 gives it some issues. Card reader is convenient. VGA is nice for those of us who can still use it. I can't say anything about the built-in camera. The new wireless adapter seems awesome, as mentioned before, wireless video streaming even at 1080p is a cinch with decent bandwidth. The touchpad is not my favorite. It's the newer style, where the whole rectangle depresses for a click, and R/L aren't physically separate clicks. Not too bad to get used to, but difficult to maneuver sometimes. There is a FN+F9 toggle to disable it, which is handy with a mouse. Also, there is no backlight on the keyboard, which is just fine, but the lack of Caps Lock/Num Lock indicators irks me. Since I never change the Num Lock, the 10-key (did I mention it had a 10-key?) will always work but caps lock is dicier. However, the accessability options in Win10 make up for it a little (play a sound when you toggle the lock). And lastly, there are 4 indicators on the front-right of the chassis: Power, Battery, Processor, and Airplane mode. Just one gripe- Asus's proprietary chargers are good and bad. It's really portable, because the entire length of the cable can wind around the adapter brick. But that's only because the adapter brick is rather large. Granted, it doesn't need a grounded socket (it's just 2 plug) which makes it easier to use with extension cables. But the brick will take up plenty of space on any wall or strip you use. The following link points to the charger (not sure if it's the same model, but same size). https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Charger-Asus-C200MA-VivoBook/dp/B016KK3PKA/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_3?ie=UTF8&=1467774528&sr=8-3-fkmr2&keywords=asus+f556+charger I love this machine, especially at the price I got it at. I can't totally recommend the F556UA-AS54 at its hiked price of $630 (as of July 5th 2016), but warehouse deals definitely make it more worthwhile. Windows 10 pairs okay with it, but external display features are still rough. If you need to be connecting frequently to projectors or extra monitors, Win10 doesn't make it convenient. ... show more

  • Good Solid Mid-range laptop. SSD, 6th gen i5.
I spent about a month looking for a good mid-range budget laptop with both a decent CPU and an SSD drive. This fit the bill perfectly. I have used many ASUS monitors over the years, but never a laptop from them - although I have always felt they are a reliable brand. Pros: 6th Gen i5 processor SSD storage drive 8 gigs of ram Very little bloat ware. Only removed a few piece of software Very snappy and good performance for the bit I used it (removed a bit of crapware, installed basic software before it was given as a graduation gift) Price vs Performance I feel hits the sweet spot with this laptop. Light, easy to carry in a backpack. USB 3.1 C Several USB 3 and USB 2 ports. Wireless AC Bluetooth 4.1 Very quite - but no power indicator. Cons No removable battery, if the battery starts to degrade you are stuck with it. Mostly plastic housing, but what can you expect for the price? Power button does not light up when turned on. Normally wouldn't mind, but the laptop is so quite when you turn it on, its hard to tell if its on. This was a graduation gift for someone going off to collage, so I wanted a laptop that would preform well at word processing and school work, while still getting good battery life so she can use it all day. I wanted a SSD drive, 6th gen CPU (for both preformance and lower power use) and to have 8hrs of batter life. This was a hard order to fill while staying in the $500-$600 price range that I had agreed on with the other person paying for 1/2 the laptop. I found most of your "budge" $300-$400 laptops where not worth the price when looking at the specs. Very low end CPU's that would stumble over basic task. Lower amounts of ram, but then they brag up a "1TB hard drive", but is a 5400 RMP bottom of the light drive. On the other end of the spectrum we have high end laptops that start around $700 and where overkill for school use. Finally started looking for Business class and mid-range laptops, which was still someone of a crap shoot giving me products between $400 POS laptops and $1200 laptops with a dedicated GPU that was not necessary in this case. Finally found this guy, and he fit the bill perfectly. I hope the battery life holds up and the goes the distance. I wish I could make this product easier to find for people looking to get a midrange laptop. ... show more
