Easy to use, minimal fuss

The kit comes with everything needed to put it into operation. I will say that I was a little disappointed in the quality of instructions and documentation. Some of the color photos that they used in the instruction booklet had poor contrast and made it difficult to make out some details. A little more clarification in the text -- just another sentence or two -- would have made a world of difference. For instance, the drive belt needs to be routed underneath the two smooth wheels and over the cog. Also, the ends of the belt need to be slid through the slot at the end and held in place by the bolt and washer, so that the belt rests in the channel of the beam (I included photos of both of these). Aside from the instruction issue, which was minor, the unit was easily assembled due to excellent design. Once this was done, the unit was quickly ready for operation. I started off using the desktop LaserGRBL software, which worked pretty well. For this, I plugged the unit directly into my PC using the included USB cable. My first project was to make a patch with a sheet of faux leather. I did a few practice runs first on the included craft paper before committing to the leather. I found that the guide in the back of the construction booklet makes for a good starting point, but I did need to make some adjustments to speed and power to get it just right. Setting the laser at about 5000 mm/min at 80% power seemed to do the trick for me (see video). I did find, however, that going over the same area again can cause alignment issues, even when nothing has been moved. But that’s probably a software issue. After the leather, I used the 100mmX2mm basswood blank that came in the kit to make a coaster. I decided to try out the app to engrave/cut this project. The app was fairly straightforward to use, and I can see using that for quick projects, but I prefer the PC. One issue that I had with the app was that it does not seem to have any cutting functionality, besides changing the base settings. I ended up using a separate file for cutting the outline. I was pleased to see that the laser had no problem cutting through the 2 mm Basswood. I have no doubt that it will easily cut through thicker material. All things considered, I think this is a great hobby laser.

I operate a full‑function fabrication print shop using high‑quality machines such as two enclosed Creality Falcon Pro 22W lasers, an additional enclosed 55W laser, two UniFormation GK3 resin printers, and two Kobra S1 Max filament units. So compared to the tools I normally work with, you may wonder why I would want a modest 7W engraver that cannot match the power or workflow of my larger equipment. That part is true — however, this unit still has a real purpose in my shop. I dedicated the ARTILUME A4 Laser Engraver to my free monthly classes for local pre‑teen students, where I teach the basics of additive machinery. This unit is lightweight, easy to operate, and simple enough that the kids can participate in the setup steps while I supervise. Assembly and calibration took about 30 minutes, and once set up correctly, it handled fine text and delicate patterns very well. Its speed is faster than many entry‑level machines, making it great for small DIY craft projects. The air assist also makes a noticeable difference on wood, so I recommend keeping it on for cleaner cuts and reduced charring. This is a perfect unit for beginners and light craft makers. Each student creates their own design — name tags, keychains, small wooden ornaments, or simple drawings — then uploads it to the connected laptop and watches their creation engrave right in front of them. My pre‑teen group loves this part, and having this machine in our creative class has made their experience more hands‑on and enjoyable. I like using this laser as a teaching tool because it lets each student learn real engraving in a safe, guided way. Before purchasing, buyers should understand how and where they plan to use this machine. • The ARTILUME A4 product page does not mention the use of a honeycomb bed. Without one, fumes and residue have nowhere to disperse, which can affect air quality. Many buyers consider honeycomb beds “optional,” but depending on your workspace, they are an important safety feature. Most 400 × 400 honeycomb beds work well. • The ARTILUME A4 is an open‑frame laser, and the product page does not specify exhaust duct dimensions or CFM requirements. Without an enclosed cutting bed, fumes and smoke escape directly into the surrounding air. • Because this is an open‑bed machine, proper fume extraction is essential. This unit is NOT suitable for closed rooms or indoor craft areas without dedicated fume extraction or proper HVAC integration. If you plan to use this tool indoors, I highly recommend setting up direct exhaust venting to pull fumes away. In open workspaces such as a garage or shed, keep your setup near open doors so the area stays well‑ventilated. The ventilation notes I shared are based on my own home workshop setup and may not apply to every space. Your requirements may differ depending on your room layout and ventilation system. Capable Budget Engraver, but the Phone App Needs Work

I ordered this laser engraver because I wanted a machine with a larger working area than my current xTool M1 so I could engrave larger projects. The machine arrived very well packed, with the individual components separated and protected by foam. Everything arrived safely and without damage. Assembly was surprisingly easy. The included paper instructions weren’t particularly helpful, but there was a QR code that took me to online instructions covering assembly, setup, calibration, and first use. Those instructions were much better. It took me only about 30 minutes to go from opening the box to making my first engraving. I like the idea of the phone app. It allows you to grab an image directly from your phone and quickly engrave it without going through a more complicated workflow. I tested it and got decent results, but the app definitely needs improvement. The preview didn’t give me a very good representation of what my settings would actually produce, so you really need to understand your power and speed settings. The app is also supposed to allow adjustments during an engraving, but I found that feature inconsistent. During one test, my engraving was coming out too dark, so I paused the job to adjust the settings. The app wouldn’t properly resume afterward and instead tried to reload the file and start the engraving again. For quick, simple projects the app is convenient, but I wouldn’t rely on it for more precise work. Fortunately, the engraver also works with LightBurn, which is a major advantage for me. It took some experimenting to get my settings dialed in, but once I did, my results through LightBurn were significantly better and more predictable than what I achieved using the phone app. This is an open-frame machine, so there are some trade-offs compared with my enclosed xTool. Engraving produces smoke and noticeable odor, so adequate ventilation is important. Focus is also set manually using the included spacer rather than automatically. The spacer works fine and makes setting the correct distance fairly straightforward, but it’s another manual step in the setup process. As far as performance, the 7W laser has done a good job engraving, which is my primary reason for owning it. Cutting is more limited. In my testing, it struggled once I moved beyond approximately 1/8-inch plywood, so I would consider this particular version much more capable as an engraver than as a machine for regularly cutting thicker materials. Overall, I’m impressed with what this machine can do for a budget laser engraver. The hardware performed well, setup was easy with the online instructions, the working area gives me the extra space I wanted, and LightBurn compatibility makes it considerably more useful. The phone app needs refinement and the 7W laser has limitations for cutting, but for my primary use of engraving larger projects, it has performed well.

Not Air Assist Capable

This isn't a bad laser engraver, especially for someone looking for a machine with a reasonably large working area. The 400 x 400mm bed provides plenty of room for larger designs or engraving multiple smaller items at once, which is definitely a plus. However, my biggest complaint is the lack of a way to connect an air assist system. For anyone planning to do more than basic engraving, this is a significant limitation. Air assist is especially important when cutting wood because it helps clear smoke and debris from the cut, reduces charring, and improves cutting performance. With only 7 watts of laser power, this machine already has limitations when it comes to cutting wood. Even when cutting thinner materials, having air assist makes a substantial difference in the quality and consistency of the results. Unfortunately, this machine doesn't provide a straightforward way to add it. If your primary goal is engraving rather than cutting, this could be a reasonable option. The large working area is certainly appealing. However, if you plan to make wooden signs, ornaments, layered artwork, or other projects that require cutting through material, I would strongly recommend looking for a laser that supports air assist. Overall, it's a decent entry-level engraver, but the lack of air assist significantly limits its versatility. That's a big enough drawback to keep me from giving it a higher rating.

Great little lasers for portable use and for packing and taking with you

Nice little 7 watt laser engraver, it works great for small projects and light engraving, it’s very portable and easy to take with you wherever you go, it packs nearly in the portable stand that comes with the kit, it will cut through 6/7 ounce leather neatly and will cut through craft woods as well, the engravings are crisp and clean and so are the cuts as long as you have the honeycomb backing, otherwise cutting is a little messy and leaves residue, the only drawback on a smaller laser like this is that it’s pretty slow, but there are always drawbacks in anything scaled down to be portable and convenient, over all it’s a good value for the money especially with the storage case/riser stand which makes it great for using the tumbler or round object attachment is used, overall I love these little 7 watt lasers, and it does do the job needed

Great for Learning, but I’d Skip the Mobile App

As someone who is still learning laser engraving, I've been pleased with my experience so far. Assembly and setup took me about two hours, even though the instructions were easy to follow. The work area is larger than I expected, so I ended up dedicating an entire workbench to it, giving me plenty of space to practice. Connecting the engraver to my MacBook Pro with LightBurn was quick and straightforward, and it connected to the machine without any issues. The engraver has operated consistently during my testing with no errors or interruptions. I've only engraved 1/8-inch (3 mm) 12 x 12-inch basswood and a few Baltic birch plywood scraps so far, but the results have been clean and precise once I started dialing in the correct settings. My biggest frustration was the mobile app. It worked for very basic designs, but I found it limiting and eventually deleted it. Using LightBurn on my MacBook Pro gave me noticeably better results and much more control over the engraving settings, especially for more detailed designs. The frame feels sturdy once assembled, although there is some vibration during operation, which wasn't unexpected for a machine this size. If you're new to laser engraving, there's definitely a learning curve, but that's more about learning the software and material settings than the machine itself. I'm still experimenting, with plans to make engraved wooden charms for braided bracelets. Based on my experience so far, I think this is a solid machine for beginners who are willing to spend time learning desktop software rather than relying on the mobile app.

TL:DR - impressive power for a 7w laser, great for wood and easy to use. Worked on mild steel but would still struggle with stainless. I work consistently with metal as a blacksmith... I saw this and got excited to start etching my work since I saw this could work with stainless steel. To start, this was extremely well packaged and protected. I then opened the instructions and it was some of the best instructions I've seen in a long time. Each step had all the hardware in its own labled zip lock so there was no guessing game, and it came with all the tools needed. I then got to using the app, which is a bit clunky, but it worked for creating what I tested the system with so it isnt too bad. Biggest downside is it has direct wifi connect and you cant access the internet while using the device. You also have to remain connected the entire time it is operating. The PC/MAC programs work great, again you need to remain plugged in during operations though. Now to the etching... color me completely impressed for a 7W laser engraver. A 500/500cm design on a soft wood only took about 6 minutes. I did a second pass just because there was a bit of a faded look to a few letters, I probably should have turned down the power because it actually wound up cutting through in a few of the darker spots. I then tried this on some mild steel. The instructions say it works on stainless (I didnt have any stainless sheets) so I figured why not try mild. I did 2 passes at 90% power at 150mm/min pace (the recommended settings for stainless). I created a 20mm/22mm in 15min. My second picture shows the difference before and after washing it with acetone. I wanted to be sure it etched and didnt just cause some surface burns on the metal. This works good on mild, but it would likely take significantly more passes to work on something as hard as stainless. Still, as long as you understand what to expect, this is an excellent system for a 7W laser engraver.
