Read the sizing chart. I have 7 and 11 year old boys. I purchased the small and medium. When I first opened them, I thought they looked the same--both wanted Red. However, once I put them on and fitted them...there is a difference. The Medium is definitely too big on my 7 year old. The easiest way for me to tell the equipment apart is by reading the tag. As you can see in the pix, they look almost the same but they fit differently. Both were perfect fits for my sons. As you can see, there's minimal scratches after almost a month of usage. My daughter is 9. She is neither super skinny nor on the chunky side, but pretty average for her age. The elbows and knees fit ok but the straps to hold them on are waaaay too small. She got the strap through the hole but then couldn't get it back to attach without causing herself pain.
