At the heart of Arcs lies a unique action selection system inspired by trick-taking card games. A shared deck of cards across four suits, ranked from 1 to 7, determines what actions players can take. Cards are played into a trick-taking–adjacent structure that decides initiative, available actions, and when players may declare Ambitions. Only three Ambitions score during each deal, making timing everything. Reading the table, managing imperfect hands, and capitalizing on opponents’ card play are essential skills for success. Combat in Arcs is fast, tense, and impactful. The attacker chooses how much risk to take, pushing their luck for greater rewards, while defenders must anticipate threats and prepare sufficient ships and supporting cards in their tableau. These streamlined battles keep the game moving while delivering memorable, high-stakes moments. The base game is richly produced, including a beautiful six-panel board, nearly one hundred wooden ships and agents, eighteen custom engraved dice, and a large deck of cards featuring over sixty pieces of unique artwork. Arcs can be played without the optional Leaders and Lore cards for an easier teach, or with them to unlock deeper asymmetry and a more robust strategic experience.
