  • Love it!
I like everything about this machine. The look and feel of it, and the quality of the components. I did replace the joystick gates at the recommendation of others with these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06VVG936T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it made a big difference with controlling movement. The screen looks fantastic, seems to work perfectly, and I have already put quite a few hours on it with no issues with the joystick or buttons. Im truly loving this game, with the only exception that I realize that as bad as I was at this game back when it came out, I haven't improved any over the years..... ... show more

  • Decent product for the money
Joystick is choppy. Original arcade joystick was smooth and fluid back in the day. More advanced moves are much more difficult to perform because of the choppy joystick. Takes about 2 hours to assemble counting the 30 minutes it takes to unpack everything. Assembly is not difficult at all and the instruction manual is spot on for easy to follow directions. Not sure if I over tightening or warped anything but I could not install 2 bolts. 1 bolt would not go at all the other bolt only went in about half way. Wish I could remember at the fighting and finishing moves. ... show more

  • How does this compare to a real Mortal Kombat ][ Arcade Cabinet?
I didn't want to be too harsh but honest in this review. But a long time ago I was blown away by Mortal Kombat 1. It was one of the first realistic arcade games with real digitized actors. Aside from Pit Fighter that was a huge upgrade. The Fatalities at the time were jaw dropping for games. Sub-Zero's Head Rip or Kano's Heart Rip while still beating still reign supreme. The others were pretty tame. Then Mortal Kombat ][ arrives at my local university. Sadly to say this distracted me from going to Calculus class. You could say that Summer was the class of MK2. 2 Quarters per Credit to Start. Being new to the the arcade game it was easy to get slaughtered by the CPU or real Human opponents since I had never played MK1 in the Arcades and only watched. A well known tournament champion player showed up once and cleaned house. After finding another location that charged a quarter per Credit to Start and learning the finer details of combo damage all the people who used to beat me started to lose and others who played me once after not having played me for a few months lost and blamed it on the controller. Then MK2 got replaced by Primal Rage and MK3. I ran into the tournament champion player later at another Arcade and he happened to need a ride back home and I was in the same city. On the way back there was a 7-11 with a MK2 machine and for old times sake we played. After beating him multiple times he complained his joystick was sticky or stuck. I offered to switch controllers. There was some stickiness but not enough that the controller was defective. Eventually he realized I was better than him so he wanted to do Random Select instead of letting me pick my own character. That was truly the last time I played this against a real opponent after defeating the well known tournament champion. However in hindsight I never regretted dropping out of Calculus when I went to the class of MK2 even to this day. I had thought about getting this Arcade1Up versus the real full size. After testing the Arcade1Up, I have some thoughts on why this is sad replica compared to the real deal and also explain any pros about it. One thing that irked me is let's say you choose MK2 after turning it on. If you reset the machine it will go back to the select MK1, MK2, or UMK3 menu. This isn't good if you want to stick with a particular MK when turning it on. So there needs to be a feature to set a default Mortal Kombat to start when booted rather than the MK selection menu. I bet this could be easily fixed with a firmware update in newer models or some USB interface for people to flash it themselves at home. Here's where the Arcade1UP really loses for me. The joystick controllers are too loose. The original arcade joysticks were a bit more stiffer and more accurate from my memory. So Left, Right, Up, Down are more precise and when you let go of the joystick it bounces back faster. I'm not sure if there is a way to upgrade these to the real original joysticks for that authentic tactile response. The buttons also felt different like they didn't have much give. Imagine if the buttons were equipped with the same response as mechanical keyboard keys it would feel better. Here's the biggest gripe and I hope one day they sell a full size cabinet or at least control panel replacements. If they could sell an upgrade controller platform that is equal to the original arcade cabinet give or take 4 more inches would be better. There's no way two adults could comfortably play this game with the limited amount of room between the two Player controllers. In fact back in the day I remember a large Samoan Player who pretty much invaded your space standing next to you as his forearm was constantly in contact with yours. That's where an extra 4 inches on top of the original full size arcade controller platform width. Even with the riser I found it's not exactly tall enough for two standing adults to play comfortably. I might boost it up to 2ft with inch increments for precision adjustments. To be fair I evaluated the AI of the game. The game seemed to play and respond identical to the Arcade version and possibly it's set on 5 - Very Hard which is piece of cake for me. But due to the poor joystick this would be unacceptable for tournament play as doing moves can often fail to respond properly. So in the end I'd like them to fix the joystick controllers and buttons, come up with a wider controller platform upgrade and adds 4 more inches to the ''original arcade platform width'' not the Arcade1UP platform width. The ability to set a default MK to boot to permanently unless changed. Other options is add USB ports so people can use an external USB Keyboard or USB joystick to control their character better. Of course the best option is to sell a full sized model not needing the platform so it looks identical. Lastly this is more of a feature that would be useful for competition and get more value out of it. If they added an option for an ethernet port on the rear to hook up to internet and be able to play another opponent on a server or locally between two Arcade1Ups in the same room. Part of the excitement back then was playing against real people not just someone coming over who knows nothing about the game. So I can see Arcade1UP gaming servers being a huge advantage. Maybe one day tournaments with sponsored prize pools. Finally external video / audio HDMI and VGA plus 3.5mm audio outputs for people wanted to hook this up to a larger screen for playing or for audience spectators. Something that would be a true asset for tournaments or people who want to play on a larger screen and a USB keyboard or USB joystick. Add all these options/features and we got a solid 5 star product. I'm giving it 3 out of 5 maybe being a bit biased in favor of the product that it was actually created. But a more critical rating I would have given it a 2 out of 5 if I hated MK. :) Honestly if it were possible it would get 2.5/5.0. It seems pretty harsh as I said before but the most honest evaluation I can give. I suppose the only other additions would be include the original MK3 and MK4 to be added also for completion. I believe this one only has MK1, MK2, and UMK3. Price wise I'd say $150 would be a fair price given the current downsides of the product. I get a better gaming experience using a USB keyboard and Mame if I can't play on a real MK2 Arcade cabinet. If this Arcade1UP gets improved to what I stated it'd be worth $250 and get plenty of sales including possibly people buying 2 or 3 of them for LAN and internet play. I can imagine tournaments being held at home playing someone in another country. This is what will differentiate the Arcade1UP from being a simple gimmick mediocre replica to a superior product people with cherish. Otherwise it'll just sit there in some man cave for some CPU play only. Finally a $350-$400 for a full sized authentic version with my stated improvements and larger screen to match. ... show more
