  • Great gravel cleaner for smaller tanks!
This is a really great gravel cleaner for smaller fish tanks! It's super easy to put together and work and it works really well! I had another gravel cleaner sort of like this one that worked with a hand pump and it stopped working within the third cleaning. I don't know if it got gravel and sand stuck in it or a whole in the pump or tubing, but it just didn't work hardly at all within hours of the first uses. This cleaner, however, seems to be much better made, and I think it even cost less than the other cleaner I picked up! Can't complain about a better product for a better price! The hoses are long enough to easily go within a bucket to empty the water and within the tank to easily syphon things out at the same time like it should. These hand pumps syphon rather slowly, but that's exactly what they're supposed to do for smaller tanks so you can be more specific about how you clean the gravel and sand at the bottom, but it works really well! The clips it comes with are a great extra item to have to keep the hoses secure so you don't accidently syphon onto your floor when trying to empty out your tank. Overall an absolutely fantastic hand-gravel cleaner for any smaller tank! ... show more

  • Nice vacuum set
Bottom line - would recommend for smaller tanks. This is a very nice set and appears well constructed. Unlike many kits, this comes with plenty of hose to reach from the tank to my bucket, even with it on a tall stand. The clips work very well at keeping the hose attached to the tank and bucket. For my 10 gallon tank, this works perfect and the flow is good. However, I would not recommend using it for larger tanks if doing more than a 20% water change...even that takes a while with this diameter hose. I began to use this on my 50 gallon, which I had to do approx a 30% water change today. However, I soon switched to a larger diameter hose, otherwise it would have taken way too long. You can see from the photo, the 90 degree flow control valve is less than 1/2 inch internal diameter. The siphon bulb worked well at starting the flow (even when adapted to my 1" ID hose). The flow control valve also works well, though right now it is very tight and does not turn easily. As a result, I actually need to use 2 hands to move it...ideally one should be able to do this with just your thumb. Maybe after a few more uses it will start to loosen. My only concerns are how easily it will be to dislodge debris that may get caught in the unit (such as a leaf or malasian trumpet snails shell). I have had another set (different brand) get ruined by a MTS shell that was lodged in the check valve of the ball siphon - that unit the valves were inaccesible and I was unable to remove thebshell without breaking the ball siphon/check valves. For this unit, this is also a concern, as is the 90 degree angle of the flow control valve. So far, I'm satisfied with this product and would recommend (for smaller tanks). ... show more

  • More durable than I expected
I didn't really expect much for the price of this item but I decided to give it a try as I had been manually scooping out water to do water changed in my tank. The plastic tubes are quite thick and rigid. They come in sections that screw together with couplers and seal with o-rings. An end is included both for simple water changes as well as sand and gravel cleaning. The siphon is started by squeezing the bulb and few times and then you just let it drain until you get to the desired level. There are also two convenient clips included for the hose and the wand to hold them in place. Overall I think the quality and price of this item make it an excellent value. I recommend. ... show more

  • Works wonders!
What I love about this is that you can control how fast you’re draining the water. It’s amazing. It’s easy to get started and solid quality material. I will never use another cheap hose one again. This is amazing and makes water changes so much easier.

  • Mixed Feelings For My Larger Tank With Fine Coral Sand.
This is a well made aquarium syphon with a hand bulb to create suction and start a syphon. There are plenty of threaded extension tube pieces to allow operation to the depth of most home tanks. I think this may be the perfect set-up to clean a smaller tank with gravel. I however, have a 75 Gallon Cichlid tank with a coral sand substrate. The problem is, as well as this is designed, it does not work well for my tank. I typically use a large, clear plastic tube that is 3" in diameter and 12' long that connects to a 1" diameter, 3' rubber tube. Once I start a syphon, the sand and dirty water are pulled up into the tube 4-5" and I can easily fold/pinch the soft tubing to allow the sand to drop back down and the dirty water continues to the bucket. I repeat this multiple times at each new location to remove the dirty water from the fine sand. This pinch technique works quite well. Here is my problem with the AQQA unit: Once the bulb is squeezed several times, the syphon starts flowing and quickly packs the small 2.5" bottom chamber with sand, stopping the flow. There is a flow control lever, but you can't really get the right balance while gripping the cleaning tube and also manipulating the valve to increase and then decrease the flow multiple times. I think this is a well made and well priced tank cleaner, BUT it will work best with heavier, larger gravel in a smaller tank. The lower plastic cleaning chamber is just too small to allow the dirty water to pass without sucking up the finer sand and clogging the line. ... show more

  • Easy to put together, nice design
This is going to be my new primary gravel vac moving forward. I really like the design, and how you don't have to dunk your arm into the tank to actually get it going. The suction is strong, but less so than a generic vac. I don't mind that at all, because most of my tanks are under 20g and shrimp/planted tanks, so I don't want too much power. The stock nozzle is good as-is, but looks like you could probably add another foot on if you are cleaning a large tank. Seems pretty versatile, especially with the adjustable flow. Maybe I need to get it broken in, but for me, I can't adjust that thing with one hand. Time will tell. Even so, this is a great option for pretty much any aquarium owner. ... show more
