  • Excellent unit-functions flawlessly
Style: Dehumidifier + Wall Mount Control
AprilAire E130 Dehumidifier Review After extensive research on dehumidifiers, I purchased the AprilAire E130 to address persistent humidity issues in my 2,000-square-foot finished basement. This unit replaced three previous dehumidifiers: a GE model and two foreign-made brands, all of which claimed to efficiently reduce humidity in a 2,000-square-foot area but failed to deliver. My basement’s relative humidity (RH) was consistently around 80%, and my most recent foreign brand (purchased for $250) ran continuously yet only reduced RH to about 75%. Even though it says it can cover a 2k S.F.unit. This led to mildew developing on some of my basement items. During my research, I noticed that reviews of non-USA-made brands often praised customer service for addressing issues like leaks, non-functional units, or units dead on arrival. However, other reviews highlighted poor or non-existent customer service, which aligned with my own frustrating experiences. My observation of these reviews was all-telling in that they revealed the many problems with these units. I contacted AprilAire’s customer service and technical support via email over several days prior to my purchase, asking detailed questions about my humidity problem. They responded promptly on the same day in most cases, asking relevant questions about my location, square footage, and other factors. After I provided additional details, they followed up with another email, and I also spoke with their customer service team by phone. Their consistent and helpful responses gave me confidence in their product. I chose the AprilAire E130 because, unlike a heat pump, a dehumidifier cannot be oversized for a space, according to Aprilaire technical support. I purchased it for just under $2,000 during Amazon’s Prime Week, and it arrived in two days via Amazon delivery. The two individuals were excellent. The freestanding unit requires no ductwork integration. It is a plug and play unit. Upon powering up, I set the humidity to 52%, it sampled the air for 3–5 minutes before beginning dehumidification. Starting at 78% basement RH, the E130 reduced the basement’s humidity to 66% in just 7 minutes. I cross-checked this with a Govee humidistat, which showed a reading within 3–5% of the AprilAire’s display. About 20 minutes later, it was at 52%. I did not modify the E130’s offset. The included wired remote was straightforward to install, though I recommend using 18-gauge, 4-pair wire instead of 22-gauge, as the latter is too thin and difficult to seat properly in the control terminal block next to the LED display. The remote has four terminal blocks; ensure each wire from the E130’s terminal block connects to the corresponding block on the remote. To enable remote control, power off the unit, hold the control mode button, and press the down arrow to program the handoff (page 16 of the manual). I needed to raise the unit so the e130 was high enough to drain into the condensate pump. I cut a 4x4 into 6-inch pieces, then using a paddle bit on one side of each 4 inch side of the block, cut about ¼ inch down to rest each foot into the cut. Also, remember to level the unit so it drains properly, (i.e.) front to back and left to right. The drain barb for the e130 is ¾ inch INSIDE DIAMETER-a 1-inch Outer Diameter. Also, most condensate pumps require a 3/8 inner diameter for the drain line. The E130 operates quietly, allowing normal conversation nearby, and cycles approximately six -8 times per day for about 5-7 minutes, with higher outdoor humidity. Overall, the unit has performed exceptionally well, efficiently resolving my basement’s humidity issues. This is a strong buy although a bit pricey, worth every penny IMHO. ... show more

  • One stout dehumidifier
Style: Dehumidifier
I previously reviewed Aprilaire’s E100, which I installed in my basement. You can go to my profile and read what I had to say about it, also. With the benefit of owning both models, E130 (for this review) and the E100 (previously reviewed), I can say that both are remarkably capable units. The E130 dehumidifies two stories. With a loft overlooking the main level, there is abundant mixing of air between the main level and the second floor. I sized the E130 purchase on advice from my HVAC tech. Since I live in a very humid and sticky climate, he thought that would have the moisture removing capacity that I need, which it does. As I write in my other review, I installed this E130 in my attic, using the internal sensor of the dehumidifier, which I believe was a mistake. Furthermore, Aprilaire recommends using an initial setting of 59% RH, but they do not offer any reasoning for why. Since, to me 59% RH is not where I want my house to be, I changed it to 45% on day one. At the time I lowered the setting, I also placed a portable humidity logger upstairs. By the second day, the humidity on the logger had reached 29.8% RH. That 15% difference between indoor humidity and set point lead me to believe that the internal sensor was reading the humidity in my ductwork and more specifically the moisture proximal to the air handler drain pan, not the actual humidity of the living space. Although I don’t mind 30% RH, I didn’t want it to keep dropping below that point. So, I changed the set point to 50% RH. That initially improved my indoor humidity such that it did not drop below 34%, and while it did cycle, it trended up, until it leveled out at an average of 45% RH (range: 40% -52%). At this point, it was 10 days since the installation, and I dropped the set point back to 45%, since the delta between the set point and the average humidity was 5% and the delta between the set point and the minimum was 10%. I’m attributing this change in delta to the moisture contribution of the air handler drain pan to the locally sensed moisture in the ductwork rather than the living space moisture which it was not configured to sense. An important lesson that I learned with both units running is that having the humidity sensor in the living space is the better way to operate. Although there may be some benefit to controlling moisture in the ductwork directly, indoor comfort is my primary concern. As if the ease with which the E130 drops my indoor humidity were not impressive on its own, the bathroom fan in my teenage son’s upstairs bathroom recently stopped working, and he takes steamy hot showers that fog up his bathroom mirror. This additional moisture load is being entirely handled by our E130 without any performance degradation. It registers as a peak on the graph from my data logger, but it does not overwhelm the E130 in the slightest. All this is to say, the E130 impresses. Just remember to have your controller located in your living space. ... show more

  • Drain pan leaking
Style: Dehumidifier + Wall Mount Control
After one year of use the plastic fitting for the built in drain pan has cracked and is leaking. I contacted Aprilaire for a repair solution and they said that the drain pan is not replacable. Their solution was to apply an epoxy type glue or just let it drip into the secondary drip pan. I my opinion the drain pan is made from a cheap plastic. As for dehumidifying the unit works fine butbecause of the poor quality of the drain pan I would not recommend this product. ... show more

  • Outstanding product
Style: Dehumidifier + Wall Mount Control
Installation was relatively easy. I did have some questions so I called Customer Support. Very helpful and knowledgeable. They helped me size the unit for my application. Awesome 5 year warranty. Within a few days I could see the improvement in the crawl space. As expected, unit ran quite a bit to get relative humidity down from about 64 to average 57. After a month I’ve noticed that it doesn’t turn on near as often. I love the remote monitor so I can easily check RH in the crawl space or change settings. The unit is very quiet. I’m very pleased so far. ... show more
