  • What did you think 230V means?
Unlike the other 2 reviewers, I understood what 230V means. This unit works great, and is a very affordable 220 volt back up. I've had one of these units for over 2 years, without issue. Very well built product.

  • Don't do it.
I ordered this thing and waited months and months (like 3) and it never came. Finally called the company multiple times and still didn't get it. Finally cancelled the order. The only reason I gave it two stars is because the rep on the phone seemed pretty courteous and sincere. Also, had i of gotten it, it would have probably worked well, however, power drops in Germany are few and far between and it probably would have just been a waste of money. ... show more

  • Perfect, I thought
I purchased this product for a 230V country to provide back up power for my Synology NAS. The NAS has UPS monitoring capabilities so it can automatically safely shut down when the power goes off. This UPS (and most of the other APC UPS's) has a signalling port and a cable to plug it in to a USB port on the NAS. Perfect, I thought, so I ordered one. Well, it turns out the APC doesn't use a standard protocol on their signalling port, so it's not compatible with the NAS. I called APC and they gave me a list of APC products I needed to buy to do what I wanted to do. The protocol used to signal APC UPS info and control is proprietary, that is, private. They expect you to buy a bunch of APC products to do something this simple. They won't give out this signalling info so other companies can interface properly to their product. They do provide some software you can run on your Windows PC, if you happen to be using the UPS for backup for the PC. That does nothing for the much more prevalent problem of power backup for embedded products like a NAS. Synology NAS's use a free product called NUT (http://www.networkupstools.org/) to manage attached UPS's. NUT provides a list of UPS manufacturers and how much signalling protocol info each one is willing to provide so other companies can interface. APC provides none. Attempts have been made to reverse engineer the protocol, obviously not successfully with this product. Other manufacturers provide some or all of their protocols. I really wish I had found this info before I bought this nearly useless product. Hopefully others can learn from my mistake. ... show more

  • Misleading Blurb by Careless Amazon
As of the day I bought this, early February, 2010, the Amazon blurb said "The Back-UPS CS provides professional-grade power protection for office and home office systems." and "These features along with its classic styling make the Back-UPS CS a perfect choice for protecting your important office and home office systems." Lulled by this assurance, I did not realize that 230V is not just a harmless part of the name like BK500 or 500VA or even 300W. So I ordered and upon delivery found reference in the literature to "Valid in Australia only". What?? They have 240 Volt power. I am in the US! So right before wrecking my computer, I checked again. To my surprise, some companies use 220 to 260 volt office equipment in North America and some ship to foreign subsidiaries. So "230 volt" is sold for use here and for export, but average Amazon customers here should be EXPLICITLY WARNED and not misled. Back it goes and the vendor charges a restocking fee plus I pay shipping both ways. Oh, the joy of buying on the internet. Pitfalls abound, even with legitimate retailers. It's easy to say "You should have known that 230V means 240 volts before you bought it." Well, it did not occur to me at the time and I am annoyed by the careless, deceptive blurb. This product is not made for North American home office systems. Amazon's description is wrong and misleading. At least I did not destroy my computer. Thank you for nothing, Amazon! ... show more

Although APC is a great product, I have a boat anchor un-usable in a USA household. In do not recall the description mentioning the 230V feature. I will be in contact with Amazon.
