  • Cool filament but !Warning Can Wear Down you Nozzles
Color: 1kg Glow Green
I did not know this so be sure to take precautions and use a hardened steel nozzle when using glow filaments. taken from a reddit post: GITD filament contains strontium aluminate powder. This powder provides the desired glow effect, but is significantly harder than a standard brass nozzle. Running GITD filament through a brass nozzle is therefore like running a continuous string of sandpaper through it. Different brands of GITD filament will contain different levels of strontium aluminate, but the better the glow, the more abrasive. The speed of wear will also vary depending on factors like print speed and extrusion volume. This is why some people just widen the nozzle opening while others manage to scrape off the entire tip, rubbing it against the layers below it. The best practice for combating this issue is installing a hardened nozzle. Many options exist on the market, from A2 hardened steel to ruby. Some nozzles offer coatings that make them more abrasion-resistant than standard brass, but still not as resilient as a fully hardened nozzle. ... show more

  • Unique Sparkle
Color: Shiny Green
This is a fun filament, I was so excited to try it! Under normal light it just looks like a natural transparent filament, which is definitely something to note for what you might want to print with it. But the glow in the dark is a great effect because it is just on the sparkles. Note for my photos I used a blacklight - you really do get the best of the glow effect with a blacklight since the sparkles don't hold a charge for long. I've done two different prints so far. The first I tried was a vase (with inserts printed using other glow in the dark filament). I love how this came out because it looks great under normal light as well as in blacklight. I then tried a Ganesha print. It printed great (I've never had issues with Amolen filament) but I don't think it's my favorite application due to the transparency of the filament. I probably could have done more perimeter walls to keep it looking cleaner. But it might be something I paint some of the details of the print with a glow paint. Still happy with it, and again it looks good under either lighting application. Overall, the two things to keep in mind are to do prints that work with the transparency and know that the charge is not as strong as other glow filaments. But if you have the right print and the right place for it, it can be better than other solid glow filaments. I much prefer it to the green tinge of solid glow filaments during the day, and the sparkle is magical! ... show more

  • Points of light when appropriately charged
Color: Shiny Green
This is a review of the Amolen Shining Glow in The Dark Green PLA filament. On the spool, "Firefly" was written. I am using a Prusa i3 MK2S. Initial impressions: - The filament wasn't smooth. Running your finger along it, it is a little rough. I suspect this might be due to the inclusions of brighter phosphorescent nuggets/clusters to achieve the shining effect. - The filament is quite translucent. The appearance is more like a "natural" PLA as opposed to the more opaque glow-in-the-dark filaments I have used in the past. - Measurements at a number of locations averages out to a diameter of 1.71+/-0.01 mm. So, while a little thinner than the 1.75 claim, it is very consistent in diameter, and adjusting slicer settings can deal with the smaller diameter. - Prints can be shiny. The temperature ladder I printed had a noticeable and pleasant shine to it (far right in one attached picture). I then printed out a holiday bauble (seen at the left in one of my attached photos) in vase mode, and it took on a pretty shine - perfect for an ornament. The Benchy I printed was not as shiny, but it printed perfectly. As compared to Amolen's regular Glow-in-the-dark Green PLA filament, the overall glow is less substantial. One of my attached photos has a comparison. From left to right: Shining (Benchy), Shining (bauble), Regular (thickness test), Shining (thickness test), Regular (ladder), Shining (ladder). The prints were charged for a few hours under a few CFL bulbs in my basement. You can see the sparkles in the Shining filament prints. The regular glow-in-the-dark clearly glows more brightly. But, that is not really the point of this filament. In order to get a sparkle/firefly effect, you essentially have to have one portion of the print glow less strongly. When you place a print closer to a strong light source, the Shining filament ... shines. Okay, bad pun. The larger point is, if you are looking for maximum glow, you will want to get their regular glow-in-the-dark filament. If you are looking for something a bit more unique that no one (as far as I am aware of) has made before, you might like the Shining Glow in The Dark Green. Full disclosure, Amolen asked if I wanted to review this filament for them. ... show more

  • Glows blue in the (very) dark
Color: Blue Glow
First of all, print quality is top notch. If this stuff jams your hot end, don't use a printer you got in a box of cracker jacks. I printed at 220C and it's a nice matte clear color when not glowing. On to the good stuff. I couldn't tell this stuff was glowing until I had my room nearly pitch black. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't brighter, but not really enough to dock a star. If you look at the pictures, you'll see the glow level in the very dark room, glow level in a mostly dark room, and lights on. You can see that in the mostly dark room (middle picture) that it hardly glows at all, but there's definitely a blue tinge to it. I haven't gotten a chance to use the fluorescent orange since there's so little of it, I want to save it for something really great. I expect it will print just as flawlessly. As an "only port in the storm" option for glow blue, I'd definitely buy more of this, but I'd love to see a stronger glow. @AMOLEN, please go talk to the guys at 3D Solutech and ask how they're making their green. It's a world away from this stuff. ... show more
