  • The Most Powerful Desktop Processor in the World ! What more can be said ?
Style: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X
I recently finished my latest Workstation build with this processor. I'm 65, a retired Aerospace Engineer and I still like to do a lot of CAD design and Rendering for my hobby now. This processor is INSANE Fast ! I have been using workstations in Aerospace for the last 40 years or so. Mostly high end, very expensive UNIX boxes. But I have never seen a processor the likes of this. Expensive? YES. But if you want the best in the world you pay the price. I can't believe anyone would ever be disappointed with the AMD Threadripper 3990x as the heart of their Workstation. This processor actually has an overclocking algorithm built in called "Precision Boost Overdrive" that lets you extend the boost clock to 4.5GHz. You just set it and forget it. I have never had a crash with PBO +200MHz enabled. ... show more

  • Performance? Yes. Value? No.
Style: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X
Simply put, this is the most performant HEDT processor in the market space right now. While it is true that few people need this, those that do are also the ones that can afford it. Value wise, its not as clear, versus AMD itself and Intel's flagships. Something interesting is happening to the CPU space when it comes to online opinion and reviews. While it is true that AMD tech has improved dramatically over the past five years, the online "fan" reaction is much more extreme. In the case of the 3990x, what is most notable is the absence of a value discussion in many online reviews. Its simply performance, performance, and then performance. Businesses deploying these in depth will have different decisions than consumers. These are NOT chips for big iron running net infrastructure. As far as the individual HEDT enthusiast, pricing the 3990x against AMDs own offerings, and Intel's 7/9/10 980XE line, the 7980XE is a surprisingly strong value position against 3990X. If you have the money or the need, simply buy this, no questions asked. If you a really looking to build a home render engine at the lowest price point per performance index, then spend several hours reading in-depth online reviews written by tech experts. Ignore the online enthusiast community and Youtube, as they will always emphasize performance. EDIT: I love the comments that triumphantly declare that cheaper SKUs in the AMD line compare more favorably against 7980XE or other Intel parts. Of course they do, but this review is for a 3990wx, isn't it? Its entirely about how the two chips scale in the higher core performance niche. And for those red-ensconced AMD zealots hoping to sniff out an Intel partisan, keep looking. I have several of the TR2/4 class HEDT chips in my stable and am happy with them. Not enough? Intel's upgrades to the 7980xe remain poor values when a three year old chip can still out-perform them due to an expanded thermal envelope. Peace to all, have fun with your PCs. ... show more

  • Do not buy it for anything that can fully utilize 128 treads.
Style: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X
As others said this is a beast of a CPU. However almost every "shrink-wrapped" user (not server) application out there is not designed to run on this level of hardware. I believe there are three type of apps where it justified: 1. Blender and similar apps, 2. Some server class applications (keep in mind that it is not a real server CPU, that is Epic, 3. The most important one - if you professionally develop software that will eat all available cores with almost linear scalability. That is my case, My algorithms need as many cores as possible, fastest random IO access to storage (read Intel Optane) and as much RAM as possible. The only downside for me is limitation of 256GB of RAM on 4 channels. Because of this I will probably switch to dual Epic system, If I can justify the cost. ... show more

  • Disappointed to see it does not support RDIMMs
Style: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X
I bought the processor to expect to use it as a test field for my software. I bought 8 x 32GB ECC RDIMMs then found out that it was not even been supported. Now I have to return the RAMs. It is also hard to find ECC UDIMMs in this size. Note that for Linux installation, you also need to upgrade BIOS or the installer will be stuck after GRUB selection ... show more
