  • Prepare for LUDICROUS SPEED!
Style: CPU Only
- What the heck was that? - Your new PC.. - It’s gone to PLAID! On a serious note - I highly recommend watercooling this CPU and using liquid metal thermal conductor. (It even suggests you water cool on the box). Don’t even think about air-cooling if you are putting this in a Mini-ITX build. Consider under-volting a smidge if thermals are a concern. This is a beast for gaming, but *really* flies if you are creating a workstation for 4K and up video editing or any multi-threading apps. If you are building from scratch or upgrading from a 5 or 7 series Ryzen to a 9, the XT is the place to be. ... show more

  • AMD's Fastest Mainstream Part
Style: CPU Only
Three years ago, I build a system with an Intel i7 7700K. Last month, I replaced that Intel with an AMD R7 3800X, which advertised a 4.5GHz speed, but typically delivered about 4.2 for single core loads and 4.0 for all core. That isn't unusual for Ryzen CPU's, where your "up to" speed and your actual speed will vary by 200-300MHz. The single core speed just wasn't enough of an improvement over my old Intel. It also isn't worth my time (or yours) trying to mess with overclock settings when the chip is pretty well optimized out of the box. Enter the new XT processors. I could have swapped up to the 3800XT, which would have given me the speed bump I wanted, but would have cost $70 more for just that extra MHz. The 3900XT here was $170 more, but delivered 50% more cores as well as the same low-load speed of the lesser XT chip. It's the better value, and likely the more future-proof solution as well, as more software is written to take advantage of high core counts. So what does this 3900XT do? It does indeed hit the 4.7GHz advertised speed on 2 cores (4766MHz to be exact). It will do this while you're browsing the web or otherwise not doing much. Low-to-Medium use cases (e.g. games) will see the chip turbo up to 4.2-4.5GHz. The heaviest loads will see a boost to 4.0-4.2GHz. The exact number depends on the specific kind of program being run. In general, it's a 5-10% improvement over the 3800X. Your exact chip will vary a bit from these figures, likely less than 100MHz. It might also depend on your cooling setup. I stuck my 3900XT into a ITX box and a compact heat sink (pictured). More robust cooling and a more aggressive PBO (a built-in overclocking function) could probably net you slightly better performance. Again, on the order of 100-150MHz. So you could, potentially, see 4.7+ top speeds and 4.6 in-game turbos. However, AMD doesn't leave performance hanging out there. The main thing to consider is why this over the 3900X (no "T") which can be had for $70-100 less. In my case, I was choosing the better binning, the better chance of hitting higher low-thread clocks, and (preferably) lower heat. In short, I wanted a sure bet. The 3900XT delivers. This chip, unless you're hitting all 12 cores with 24 threads, actually runs as cool or cooler than my 3800X. So if you're looking for a lot of GHz and a lot of cores, and money isn't really an object, get this. There will be something new around the corner (there always is) and at that point, maybe you should get that instead. Right here, right now, there isn't a lot that's better. ... show more

  • Very pleased
Style: CPU Only
Let me start by saying, You will NOT get 4.7 right out of the box. Will require overclocking to achieve that. I’m getting between 3.8–4.5 with stock settings (besides ram at 3600). Ryzen “balanced plan” selected in Windows. Overall I’m happy, very fast and easy to get set up. Geekbench 5 scores are 1289 single and 10,580 for multi score. Cinebench R20 I’m scoring around 7000. ALL STOCK. Paired with a RTX 2080 TI.. an absolute monster! Thanks AMD! ... show more

  • Happy gamer/streamer
Style: CPU Only
Maximum frequency I’ve been getting is 4.975GHZ. Bios update was easy with a flash drive. I’d recommend pairing with a higher end motherboard to get the most out of it. I loved Intel and 10900k was tempting at this price range, but every aspect of the 3900xt was more pleasing. I had the 9700k and the cpu was in mid 90-100% usage while gaming on high settings with competitive games and now I find myself in the 50-60% range in 1440p COD MW. I couldn’t be happier, I’m not a Intel hater, I had excellent experiences with them, but the AMD fanboys and girls are right this round and I couldn’t be happier. ... show more

  • So far a great CPU. Disappointed it's not quad channel
Style: CPU Only
This running great however, I assumed it was quad channel but it is only dual-channel. I made the mistake of buying (4)- 16 gb- 3600 mhz RAM sticks. Although my motherboard specs a max of 128 gb ram I could not find 64 gb sticks so. I am returning the RAM for (2)- 32 GB sticks. This should be fine for quite a while. ... show more

  • Super duper cpUper
Style: CPU Only
BEASTY CPU! manhandled cinebench 20, lots of control/options, low power draw/heat for the performance versus intel! Lots of cores and this xt model is more efficient with new architecure so it OCs better too. I'm going more for cooler temps than blasting performance. Some people are putting these in baby gaming computers and undervolting them while still geting gaming performance! Lots of cool options to play with this cpu! great buy, but I wouldn't get the 3800xt, just get 3600xt, 3900x, or 3900xt ... show more
