    • It seemed fresh, and was an excellent Sumatra.
This coffee is not vacuum packed but the mylar foil bag is sealed and has a a one-way valve. The roast date is not revealed, and as usual, the sell by date is long into the future. Coffee nerds will say you should consume coffee from a few days after the roast until about a month later at the most, so the roast date is important, yet kept a secret. The main reason I bought this dark roast is I was going to mix it with another bag of beans I had bought that was too light, fruity and 3rd wavy for my tastes. But this coffee tastes so good that I don't have the heart to mix it as intended. My beans were fresh, with no hint of staleness, but not so fresh that they popped off a lot of gas in the filter paper. So if you like the darker, low acid, cocoa note, slightly smoky, type of coffee rather than the more fashionable light and fruity roasts that the cool people are using, then this very affordable, organic, fair-trade, Sumatra might be a pleasant treat for your tongue and tummy. I would readily buy it again, and so I hope the freshness and quality is consistent from bag to bag. Update: after several cups and half the bag, My opinion is only higher. We have a top of the line built in Thermador coffee espresso machine that grinds the beans so your coffee is as fresh as it can be. We usually use Starbucks because it is simply the best bar none! I was going to order our usual Starbucks but thought at this price point there's nothing to lose! It came in one day, fresh as can be, nice and dry (not oily), and WOW talk about flavor! Priced reasonably, it's a good option for those on a budget. Upon opening the bag, I noticed the beans appeared more like a medium roast, which was a slight surprise. The flavor was decent, nothing extraordinary, but it got the job done. Now, I'm used to the freshness of Costco's Ethiopian light roast or Rutamaya medium roast, which are top-notch in terms of flavor and freshness. While Amazon Fresh's offering didn't quite match up to those, the difference was minimal. You'd have to be a real coffee connoisseur to notice. I’m not a coffee snob but I like a descent cup of coffee. I do have a brewer with a grinder built in and these Amazon Fresh Medium Roast Colombian Coffee beans make a good everyday coffee. The coffee is not too dark or bitter and has a pleasant taste. After purchasing several bags of this I can say the beans and roast are consistent. I usually drink my coffee black, but I think it would be good with milk and sugar or any flavor you like without the coffee overwhelming it. If I didn’t have a grinder, I think I would still get this coffee and grind it myself because of the price. If you’re looking to save a few bucks on your coffee and you like a medium roast, this is a great choice. ... show more

We've experimented with several coffees in the past year or so. This AmazonFresh Dark Roast Whole Bean Coffee, 32 Ounce is good, but seems to leave a little to be desired. That after-taste that lingers seems to be absent. It is perhaps a little less chocolatey than my favorite brands. Otherwise, this is a pretty good coffee. The price beats anything I've found, making me appreciate it even more. I don't think this can become my daily coffee, but I can recommend it anyway. $18 of a gourmet coffee for daily use was getting way too expensive so after trying many brands I'm glad I finally found this Amazon donut shop coffee! I was surprised at how smooth it was. It was smooth and tasty, not bitter with a solid coffee flavor. I got a $10 milling blade attatchment for my nutribullet to be able to grind coffee beans without having to buy a grinder and it works great. I thought I may have ground my first batch too fine for drip brew but after trying it I wasn't disappointed. The coffee was excellent. If you're looking for a no frills, delicious and economical coffee to drip brew give it ago. I was skeptical at first but am glad I went with my gut and tried it. I've only tried the whole bean thus far but I assume ground will be just as good, just a tad less "fresh" or aromatic. ... show more

    • The sumatra is very comparable to an extra dark golden sumatra from Coffee & Tea Exchange
My local coffee retailer has been out of the extra dark Golden Sumatra that is normally my go-to favorite coffee, and they tell me it could be months before a restock. Well, super dark roasts are hard to find in general, then to find one that hits the flavor I'm craving is even harder, so I've been pretty bummed about this. I went looking back through my saved coffees here, to find something comparable, found nothing, then did a search for "sumatra dark" and stumbled upon this. I didn't have great hopes out of an Amazon-brand coffee bean, even if it was listed as fair trade organic, but gave it a shot based on the very reasonable price and quick shipping. I am astonished by how good this was!! It is not quite as dark as my usual, so I upped the amount in the ratio for my brew to match one of my other regular coffees, and, lo and behold, it is delicious! Very full of flavor and still dark enough to match my equally dark soul, I will be keeping this in regular rotation. ... show more
