This is not your gram's hobo pie makers; however, they do the job. The cast iron plates are nice quality. Food cooks well over a fire with these plates. The handles are a tad flimsy feeling, and the wood handle ends rotate a bit on my set. I'm assuming they know this and that is why they send two sets of handles with the plates. I got this mountain pie maker for camping. I needed to replace my older one. I was happy when this one arrived. The first thing v that I noticed that the handle can be taken apart making it easy to store. Its made of good quality material that will hold up to for a while. Its also nice and easy to clean when you are done using it. I love that you can make two sandwiches at once. It cooked my sandwiches perfectly. My favorite thing to make in this thing are reubens! This pie maker works great for making pizza pockets, and toasted sandwiches. The box it arrived in looked like it had been through the war, but the contents were fine. After I seasoned the cast iron in the oven, I tried it out with a couple of pizza pockets over some campfire coals. The results were awesome! A very fun camp cooking activity that the kids really enjoy. I have used pie irons before, but never the 'double' sized iron. I haven't used it to make two sandwiches at once, but the large size is nice for making sandwiches with large pieces of bread, and of course, for making pizza pockets.
