I wouldn’t purchase again. It works but not like I was expecting. The device works well if you are trying to find a place where a gas is escaping that is under a lot of pressure but a slow leak or low pressure you won’t be able to find because it is too quiet to make the “ultrasonic” sound waves. Say that with quotes because I feel like the things this device can pick up can all pretty much be heard but only if you listen to them in a very quiet environment or right next to your ear. It says to test it/adjust the levels with your fingers rubbing them together like the sign for “money” which I can hear myself pretty much the same as the machine if I’m somewhere quiet. That said this device makes it much easier to hear and potentially very very loud on regular 50 ohm headphones. It comes with an ultrasonic generator which is nice and I could see it coming in handy if you were trying to use it for the suggested use like making a door frame air tight or sound deadening a room and seeking out potential areas with poor insulation by using it on the other side of the wall from the receiver/listening device. I am a little disappointed because the LED lights that are supposed to indicate the strength of the sound so in theory you could use it without headphones at least on mine are so insensitive that they only work when a extremely strong ultrasonic noise is like 2 inches from the receiver and I can only get to work using the sound generator device which is not how what I needed this thing for. The sound generator only has one setting, on/off. And it’s extremely loud if you aren’t using it threw the wall which I found to be a novel purpose and probably great for the sole purpose of insulating a wall. I wish it was adjustable but it’s not a big deal. The other thing that is a little annoying is if you open the device up there is a little dial in it for calibrating the frequency of sound waves picks up most clearly. Adjusting it does change what things you can hear and some sound waves are only detectable by messing with it but it isn’t designed to be adjusted by the user and seems a little temperamental. The headphones it came with are terrible and very poor quality in every way. The headphone jack is awkward and prone to stress from its front and center location especially if your headphones have a larger size plug on them so be careful not to store them plugged in. The hollow tube that comes with it is really good and generally helps pinpoint sounds as the manual explains that ultrasonic noises are very directional. The metal probe I’ve not been able to find a use for and am confused how ultrasonic sound would travel thru the metal effectively but maybe on some super loud object it would work. It’s a unique device and I definitely use it sometimes but for me it didn’t work for it’s intended purpose and I’m not sure that the sounds it’s picking up are actual ultrasonic waves because I can hear them all on my own just not as loud.
