  • Great Pottery Fun
Color: Blue
My daughter and I have had so much fun learning how to make some pottery with this wheel! Definitely good for beginners, not hard to clean or operate, a lot of fun to use!

  • This wheel will work well for miniature dollhouse pottery, here is why:
Color: Green
First of all when I turned it on it had a slight motor gear noise, which I LIKE because I believe that indicates the motor turns the wheel head using gears and NOT belts (like in my weaker tiny pottery wheels that are using a belt drive). Belt driven wheels with wimpy motors have a tendency to slip and slow down a lot. This motor using a gear drive (again, my guess) means it will be a stronger motor and not slow down as much when you put pressure on the clay. I have already tested the power of this wheel by putting my finger on the top of the wheel while it was running and pushing down fairly hard and experienced minimal slowing! I will update this review if I find out anything different about slowing once clay is on the wheel. If I put pressure on the outside edges of the wherl head it slows more, but that is typical of all my wheels, even my other wheel with a stronger motor. Anyway, Hooray! Second thing I like is that the wheel is perfectly true, no wobble on the surface of the wheel head! What a relief, because they don’t give you a second wheel head like some brands do. My other stronger motored wheel had a horribly wobbly wheel, but fortunately they included a smaller second wheel head. I have done a fair bit of miniature pottery (will leave some pictures of a few of my recent items made on weaker under powered mini wheels) and due to my experience I can tell you that the BEST use for a wheel of this size and caliber is for MINIATURE pottery, which means in Hitty scale (larger than half scale), half scale (twice as big as dollhouse scale), and dollhouse scale which is the scale I work in and is the smallest, (meaning 1/12 scale, or one inch equals one foot). This wheel is powerful enough that I believe I will be able to center a larger load of clay than I normally do and throw “off the hump” if I want to. We’ll see, am not a fan of this for mini pottery. The only drawback I see with this wheel is that there is no splash pan/splash guard but I will mock up something like I do with my much smaller mini wheels. Also someone sells a setup you can buy which clips a tall splash guard around 3/4 of the wheel. You will still get splashed in the front, hence you will need the apron! However I think that for me or anyone using this wheel for tiny pottery you will be able to control the splash out somewhat by wiping the perimeter of the very large wheel head (large for mini pottery that is) frequently. Once again, none of the items in the pictures I’ve included in this review were thrown on this wheel (because I just barely opened the box). They are included so you will know that I kind of know what I am talking about and maybe will believe me not to try something too large on this wheel. This is an excellent wheel for very small things. Finally, my two weaker mini wheels will now be relegated for only throwing lids, which they can handle with no problem. I can throw a lid, and trim it up, in about ten minutes total. And my two stronger wheels (two different brands) will be for throwing pots. It helps to have at least two wheels because in miniature pottery you need to let a piece dry out a little bit sometimes twice or more while throwing it, and especially before proceeding to finish up, and this is definitely true for novices like me! If you don’t the clay gets so soft that it crumples quickly. Throwing off of two wheels means you can switch back and forth on two items and make better use of your time. I also prefer to let a piece get finished on a wheel (as in trim the top and sides of the bottom as much as possible, and let it dry to the point that it comes loose from the wheel easily. I rarely try to wire a pot off a wheel (like I would in full sized pottery throwing) as it is way too easy to mess it up. I am trying to get to the point that I don’t need to turn a pot upside down to trim the underside of the base. All the Jane Graber pots that I own were not trimmed underneath! I’m not a fan of throwing off the hump either for mini pots, except for lids (when I have the time to let it dry to leather hard before I finish it up and wire it off). I will eventually practice throwing pots off the hump with this wheel now that I have it. Note: the last picture is of a lid thrown on one of my under powered mini wheels that are so small that I can put the whole wheel inside a large stainless steel bowl to catch the drips that fly off the tiny wheel head. I think this new wheel is too large for a bowl but I might try cutting down a five gallon bucket and placing it inside that! You just need the sides of the bowl or bucket to be about an inch or so higher than the surface of the wheel head. ... show more

  • Non stick plate so clay won’t stick / anchor
Color: Green
Clay will not stick to surface / nonstick texture I’m so confused about the texture of the plate where the clay sits… it’s a texture that makes it absolutely non stick. The clay sticking to the wheel is kind of an essential part of throwing potter… without that part the physics just doesn’t work so… this is useless in that I can not anchor the clay. Great if you want to fry some eggs not so great for pottery Side note: I tried all the clay in my art studio and foam clay (used for cosplay) was the only one that sticks to it. If I decide to take up throwing foam clay I’ll come back until then I’m returning this. ... show more

  • Fun mini wheel
This tiny little pottery wheel is very cute and somewhat functional. It doesn't have a super strong motor, but it's kind of fun to play with. As a potter, I also used it as a mini wheel for glazing small pieces. It is basically a fun toy with some utility. It also comes with a wide variety of tools and accessories, which is pretty fun as well. It's a good kit for an artistic child or someone who just wants to play with the novelty of it. ... show more

  • Had fun, performed well, power cord quit next day
Color: Green
It was working great, I made a few mini pots, cute. The next day, turned it on, no power, it started, then it got hot and quit. The return window closed two days after my first use! Follow up: it's the power cord, the wheel worked with another power cord, made more mini pots... I found a replacement cord on Amazon. ... show more
