  • Excellent Laptop, But... Excellent Laptop, But...
Style: 20GB DDR5 RAM | 2TB SSD
laptop plays everything including cyberpunk at max settings 300hz, so in this sense, its one of the best laptops ive ever had. it does get a little bit hot but it has a lot of fan options, so that's easily fixable if you dont mind hearing a loud fan. as a streamer, wouldnt recommend using loud fan setting unless you have a noise cancelling mic. as a gamer, you must wear a headset because it will get loud at highest fan setting, but not necessary to use that setting at all. theres a few things i dont like. Missing number pad on the keyboard. which is a small thing. doesnt effect my rating since its something you could see in the pictures, but its worth noting. Also this laptop didnt come with any manual (sure it has a small paper that shows the ports, but thats all you get in the box besides the laptop and power adapter) Another thing i liked about my old alienware is they had this alienware respawn application, which allows you to make a backup image of your stock alienware setup in case you want to factory default. that software is non existent here, and there isnt a substitute for it either, so if i have to factory default this device i have to rely on weather or not the partition is corrupt, which sucks. Cant have an external backup or anything. But besides these little setbacks, its definitly a nice upgrade from my gtx 1070 msi laptop. and having that octa core in conjunction with rtx 3070, cant go wrong. VIRTUAL REALITY NEVER PLAYED SO SMOOTH for my vr friends out there. My first review on amazon, so totally worth writing~ ... show more

  • Nice computer, but some potential issues
Style: 20GB DDR5 RAM | 2TB SSD
I just received the m15 r4 a couple weeks ago, and have used it a bit since. A couple of times during a gaming session the computer would close out the game. Just suddenly exit. No clue what happened, and if this is a potential bigger issue lurking. Second issue is that just tonight my keyboard was not lit and would not react to any typing. I restarted and it did nothing. I closed my lid for 15 minutes and when I opened it again the keyboard was working like normal. Is this a potential issue down the road? I don't know if I hold onto it or send it back. Maybe someone could answer these questions. Other than those two things, the computer has run very fast. On League of Legends it runs 200+ fps. Typing feels really good on it, and opening up different applications is smooth. Thanks! ... show more

  • Incredible Performance
Style: 20GB DDR5 RAM | 2TB SSD
Aesthetically this laptop is very well designed and looks awesome. The light gray color against the dark trim looks great. The keyboard is luminated nicely with RGB keys that can be individually assigned. The power button is the Alienware logo and is also RGB. The power button can also be fine-tuned with various color settings. There is an RGB illuminated Alienware logo on the back of the screen that can be adjusted. Lastly, there is an LED ring around the back panel called the Tron. All the RGB’s lights are adjustable and have effects that can be tuned to a game. As far as gaming laptops go this one does not weigh as much. My previous gaming laptop was twice as heavy. I think most of the weight was transferred the giant power brick that comes with it. The power brick is large and heavy. Under normal use battery life is a few hours. Under heavy or extreme use the battery will not last more than an hour. The screen is thin and opens to a 45° angle away from the keyboard. This is nice if you are sitting up at a desk and have the laptop close to you while playing. The quality of the screen is amazing. No doubt the display and the graphics adapter contribute are large portion to the total price. I do not keep the brightness at full level even in bright light conditions. The keyboard is well designed. The keys are very responsive and depress all the way into the keyboard. The travel range of each key lends to the gaming experience. The USB-C port support 40 Gbps speeds. I connected an external Thunderbolt drive that I use with my Mac and tested the speed. The read speed was as expected but the write speed was low. Disk Random Read 1,104 MB/s (8.8 Gbps) Disk Sequential Read 2,210 MB/s (17.7 Gbps) Disk Sequential Write 537 MB/s (4.3 Gbps) I tested with two different high-quality cables. This drive consistently writes at 2,070 MB/s on my Mac. I am not sure why it writes much slower on this laptop. The most impressive feature of this laptop is the sound. It has 7.1 channel surround sound that is amazing and realistic. The sound is thrown around the room and appears to be coming from behind or from a distance. It must be experienced. The trackpad is ok and can be difficult to use with one hand. I think it is due to being undersized. Not a big deal if you do not use it a lot. Here are the stats on the internal drive. Disk Random Read 699 MB/s (5.6 Gbps) Disk Sequential Read 1,602 MB/s (12.8 Gbps) Disk Sequential Read 2,398 MB/s (19.2 Gbps) The write speed is higher than the read speeds. I also added a second drive to test the motherboard performance and found it to be above average. Disk Random Read 1,458 MB/s (11.7 Gbps) Disk Sequential Read 3,239 MB/s (25.9 Gbps) Disk Sequential Write 1,705 MB/s (13.6 Gbps) This second drive performed very well. The fans and heat control are very well done. Under normal everyday use the laptop does not get too hot, and the fans are incredibly quiet. Under extreme conditions (while gaming) the bottom of the laptop gets hot, and the fans will kick in. They are not extremely loud but are noticeable. The description states that there are 3 NVMe slots. I took the bottom cover off, which is easy to do, and only saw two. One has the included drive, and the other slot is empty. The third slot may be the Wi-Fi card and adding a drive requires removing Wi-Fi. I tested connection to an external 4K monitor using the HDMI port which worked well. This does require a higher end 4K HDMI cable (or better) to work. I also connected the same monitor using a USB-C to HDMI cable and that worked equally well. The included software allows for adjustment of every feature of the laptop from the RGB to the CPU and the fans to the power consumption. Profiles and themes can be created to easily change settings for different uses. Overall, this is an excellent laptop, and I can recommend it. ... show more

  • DO NOT BUY THE 16GB VERSION
Style: 20GB DDR5 RAM | 2TB SSD
Hands down, everything you thought a gaming PC should be, this WILL NOT SATISFY. You can launch games, but they will crash. The reason? is because you DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH MEMORY and you cannot add to it. No laptop I have ever purchase has had hard installed, un-upgradeable RAM, but this PC does. And they do not tell you. 16GB seems like you should be able to get by, but even though my hardware manager says I'm only at 60% RAM consumption, I can clearly and I mean CLEARLY tell that RAM is the issue behind having night after night of embarrassing game nights with the boys where my PC cannot play games for more than 10-15 minutes without crashing and I spend the majority of our gaming session rebooting and trying to reduce memory consumption just to apologize and call it a note. No matter how much I update the game/OS or lower the graphics of the game, or follow best practices for optimizations, I cannot get this PC to be stable in FPSs, or other ridiculously low graphics requirements games. Do not, and I repeat do not buy this PC unless you're willing to fork up the money for the 32GB version. All this being said, IT CRASHES WATCHING ONLINE VIDEO. I restarted my computer to refresh everything reasonable that I could, watched about 45 minutes of videos, and the browser became so un-responsive I had to force shutdown the browser and reboot. I had to wipe my cache several times to get ... show more

  • Workhorse with plenty of horsepower. Workhorse with plenty of horsepower.
Style: 20GB DDR5 RAM | 2TB SSD
First there is a cool factor of owning an Alienware product, the look and design of this laptop are several notches above what other laptops look like. I own MacBook 2020, and two other Dell laptops. This by far looks the coolest, but what we really care about is what's under the hood. I was a bit concerned the display wasn't 4k but screen size is small enough to where it actually looks a bit sharper than my LG Ultrafine 4K displays. Color looks great. I tried to run a user benchmark a few times with no luck for some reason. Wanted to see how it compared to my workstation. Tried updating drivers but still had issues with testing the GPU performance. So I decided to do an actual test with one of the tasks I do the most, video editing. I recently bought a Dell workstation for editing a couple months ago and wanted to compare it with the m15 R4. My workstation specs i7-10700K, GeForce RTX 2060 Super, SSD, 32GB RAM. As a hobby I do a lot of video/photo editing. I have a couple decades of IT experience. A little background. I switched to shooting in 4k 60 FPS with my DSLRs and drone footage. Even the most powerful consumer systems available 3-4 years ago have a hard time ripping these massive files and it's almost impossible to get any performance while editing. I use Adobe Premiere for all my video editing. I took one of my more complicated Premiere projects and did a few tests. Both systems did a great job in edit, meaning little to no lag while scrolling through a massive timeline at 100% playback resolution. Once again this is 4K video all at 60FPS, need emphasize that. Ripping/Rendering this 45 min project with GPU assistance took 37 mins on my workstation and 42 min on the M15. This same edit on my MacBook took just over 2 hours and was only half way at 4 hours with my older Dell laptops. Overall very pleased with the video editing performance from the m15 As far as gaming goes my son plays fortnight and gets over 200 FPS with the M15. Everything else works as expected. Multi color backlit keyboard looks great. ... show more

  • A Portable Next-Gen Console of a Laptop
Style: 20GB DDR5 RAM | 2TB SSD
With GPUs being in short supply these days, gaming laptops may be the new way gamers get to enjoy their favorite games. I guess the miners arent using gaming laptops to do their crypto stuff. My particular model of the Alienware m15 r4 came with a Intel Core i7-10870H and a RTX 3070. In Geekbench 5, this laptop scored a 1254 on the single core score and 7026 on the multicore score. The video card scored 132987 on CUDA, 117718 on OpenCL, and 72857 on Vulkan. These are the best video card device scores I have ever seen in any of my devices. I think the CPU scores are a little disappointing though. This model has 16GB or RAM, which I condsider the sweet spot for Windows 10 for price and performance. The white body of the laptop is an off-white color. When paired with my Razer Deathaddder white mouse, you can see a difference in the shade of white, but they do look nice together. The laptop features RGB backlighting under the keys and also around the backside of the laptop. Speaking of the backside, this laptop has a weird shape to it, that only photos can accurately convey. It almost looks like a rounded-rectangle exhaust port on an alien ship. I guess that's what they were going for. The keyboard is not the new-fangled Cherry mechanical switches. At least, I don't think they are. They sound like membrane keys and have a dull thud when pressed. The glass trackpad is small, but very nice. The sharp edges of the laptop keyboard deck may bother your wrists after extended playing sessions. I am noticing it just typing this review. Enabling the performance mode in the Alienware Command Center makes the fans sound like a rocket launch. I am using this laptop in balanced mode, and that was the mode I used for benchmarks as well. It paired easily with an Xbox controller, that I bought specifically to use with this laptop. Overall, I am very happy with this laptop and might make the jump to PC gaming instead of getting a new next-gen console. ... show more
