  • I love it. My last laptop had a GTX1070 in ...
RAM Size: 32 GB Capacity: GTX 1080 Display Resolution Maximum: 2560x1440 Style: Laptop Only
Picked up the version with the 2k screen, I love it. My last laptop had a GTX1070 in it which was great, but this one with the GTX1080 and 32 gig RAM is much better. Able to play games like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Assassin's Creed Origins at 2k resolution with fully maxed graphics - hair physics on, etc - perfectly smooth. The laptop gets a little warm, but for me it's no hotter than my ASUS ROG was. Expect warm, this is a 10 pound laptop with a full GTX1080 in it. This isn't meant to go on a lap! Noise level: Nearly silent for normal running, but gets quite loud when you boot up a game and the fans spin up. Watching videos or normal non-gaming use, it's very quiet. As a PC gamer, I'm so used to loud fans it doesn't bother me, but know that this needs heavy cooling for the video card it uses. It will be loud for any games (wear headphones and it doesn't matter - but people nearby will hear the fans roar). I can't say anything about the default setup, as the first thing I do is wipe the machine and install a better version of Windows first off. However, running Windows 10 Pro on it has been fine, and I had no issues getting Tobii eyetracking working and the wireless network card is great (it easily used my whole 150MB bandwidth at home). I used their little M.2 HDD for the OS, it has a 1Tb SSD drive on top of that, and then I tossed another M.2 HDD in for more space. From what I can see, max of 3 internal drives. I've always used ASUS ROGs in the past, I have to say I have been impressed by the Dell/Alienware build on this. I actually prefer it to my old ASUS laptops by quite a bit. It's more annoying to reach the hard drive and ram slots (ASUS just had a single screw and you popped off a back plate), but still not hard to reach. ... show more

  • Fatal flaw in its cooling that will produce screen stuttering and wont be able to play games.
RAM Size: 32 GB Capacity: GTX 1080 Display Resolution Maximum: 2560x1440 Style: Laptop Only
When I saw this product I got super excited. For the price, i was buying an almost top of the line gaming laptop... a gaming laptop, but sadly it came with a fatal flaw that does not allow to use for what is meant to be used: gaming. TLDR: laptop has a flaw in its cooling that will produce screen stuttering and won't allow you to play games more than 15 minutes. As I discovered after I started using it and playing game, the laptop has a major flaw in its cooling that makes the game stutters after playing between 10 and 15 minutes, and after googling about it, I discovered that there is a ton of people with the same problem, either with this laptop, Alienware 17 R4 or the 15 R3. The laptop comes with and overclocked bios for the video card, that is not stated anywhere in the product description that pumps more voltage to the vram making them overheat, and since has a flaw in the cooling pads, they don't cover all the vrams and some of them don't make contact, after playing 10 to 15 minutes the vram overheats and the produces screen stuttering, freezing your gameplay between 1 to 5 seconds, witch is the computer shutting down the vram and then starting them again (this is not the correct terchnical phrase, but it is what I understood), so they can cool and fuction properly. Most of the people that have bought this product recommend dismantling it and applying more cooling pads everywhere or removing the overclocked bios and installing a previous version, but that would void the warranty, so asked Amazon for a refund, but it won't be easy for me, since I got the laptop while I was in the states on a trip and now I'm on South America and can't return the laptop through UPS or any carrier since they don't ship products that are over 2k dollars. Lucky for me an uncle will be traveling shortly to the states and will take the laptop with him and will return it while he is there. This problem is a deal breaker and I would recommend any gamers to stay away from any of Dell products, cause a gaming laptop of 3 thousand dollars that comes with this kind of oversight in its cooling it's unacceptable. Like I said before, I was super excited to get an Alienware laptop, but now I know that I should have stayed with ASUS, like all my previous gaming laptops. ... show more

  • Aleinware R4 17, Gtx 1080, 32 GB
RAM Size: 32 GB Capacity: GTX 1080 Display Resolution Maximum: 2560x1440 Style: Laptop Only
Lots of Reviews pointed at the heating problem of these models but all is solved with the 7th generation and these machines are a mobile beast, i got the top end model equipped with the i7 7820HK, Gtx 1080,32GB Ram and it slices through games like a hot knife through butter, performance wise it excell in speed and loading capabilities no stater or hiccups and even with the most intense gaming session you will always get a consistent Frames respectable enough coming from a laptop and not a gaming desktop. the keyboard area is relevantly cool compared to other gaming laptops, i got a Cooler Master NotePal X-Slim just to keep it elevated ( not because it needs it, the laptop is designed to cool on flat table-top on its own) more than i like it elevated. screen is crisp and despite being a TN pannel it surely is a high end model with accurate colours and adequately bright output, i do prefer it with its 120hrtz, Gsync than the Full HD or the 4k 60 hrtz models. the body is made of a very pleasent robust matt material, the laptop feels very steardy and would take the test of time, i was surprised with the weight since I expected a heavy desktop replacment but holding it and for its feature, its a very acceptable weight, thin enough to be any regular main stream laptop.one of the cons that i found is the less USB connections, I got the Alienware Vindicator Backpack that i do highly recommended (will right a detailed review). Overall i am happy, definitely an expensive investment but i work abroad and wanted something i can slip in my bag and move specially it is as capable as a gaming desktop (was not the case couple of years ago!). For the people reading my review and comparing this to the Gtx 1070 model just go ahead with the high end and pay a bit more and enjoy a peace of mind and some kind of future proofing . 5 stars highly recommended ... show more
