Ok, you might not believe me but I got this laptop on the real dell website and my son was saving up for like 1.5 years for this laptop on dells website. It is delivered and my son opens it and is so happy, only to find the graphics card was broken. The laptop plugged in the wall was getting normal fps on his games. Unplugged it was getting a constant 30 fps. We called dell to have some help and they sent a guy on his way to replace it. My son had to wait another 5-6 days for him to use this laptop. The hardware guy came to our house and replaced the graphics card so we wouldn't have the problem. But look at that, we still have the same problem. Not only that but the hardware man put a super obvious dent in the machine. My son was so sad that he just wasted so much hard work on getting a machine that defeats the purpose of having a laptop. So my experience was terrible. This review may not be verified, but we got it from the dell website and let me just say something, it was terrifying for my son to waste all his hard earned money on this... ... show more

  • Large/powerful machine but has manufacturing issues (thermal paste)
2-stars for: This machine has issues with thermal throttling. The official stance from Dell is to re-apply paste to the CPU/GPU and undervolt the system. I personally do not want to be making that level of change for a laptop of this price. This was tested via tools on a USB stick prior to loading into the OS for full setup. The rest of the review. Pros: Large Battery, Good keyboard action (for a non-mechanical keyboard), responsive trackpad. Good battery life when performing new tasks. Thermal dissipation is good. The power adapter is good and a relatively decent form factor (for a 240W PSU). I've used this power adapter for other applications and find it to be phenomenal. Neutral: Gamer Aesthetics - some people really like it, some do not. Cons: Massive size (and weight) which is needed for thermal dissipation and the insanely large 99WH battery. In short, this is NOT really a portable machine. Most every "15 inch" case/bag/backpack will not fit this machine due to it's size. The version I purchased was the IPS (not g-sync) panel and was not very bright. ... show more

  • wrong model sent, a few minor setbacks in setup
Build is fantastic but this listing shows two model numbers, and neither match the model number on the documentation I received. According to the listing this is supposed to be a 120hz gsync display, but this display has a 60hz display and I cannot find a way to verify whether it is gsync equipped. I think I'll be returning this laptop as I only stepped up to this price point for the faster display. update: can't overclock display as was recommended and this is definitely not gsync, encountered a keyboard issue that caused keyboard input to become mostly unresponsive, wound up being Shadowplay, had to disable this feature in Geforce Experience update 2: Dell is forcing us to get drivers from them rather than Nvidia, as such they are not up to date causing Forza Horizon 3 to crash within 30 seconds of gameplay. update 3: Out of the box Nvidia GeForce Experience will be out of the date and not able to be updated, drivers direcetly from Alienware's website are also out of date. To update drivers go directly to nvidia, do not use the auto detect tool, manually locate the correct drivers for your device and use those. ... show more

  • This is not the NEW Alienware model!!!
I've been looking hard for a new gaming laptop, with emphasis on MSI, Acer, and Asus. I happened to stumble across the Alienware on a different site (BB), although I prefer to get everything on Amazon. The one I was looking for was 17 inch but the following holds true for the 15 inch. NOTE in the title, it says R3. The new Alienware models are all R4! But it has an updated processor, graphic card, etc. The newer models have the thermal paste issues addressed. The screens are 3....1080p, 2K, and 4K. All are 120Hz at 5ms except the 4K. All are Gsync enabled. The new model, whether 15 or 17, has a 4.8 to 5.0 star rating. I found the one by accident on BB For $1,999. I'm referring to the 17 inch. I then went to Dell, and because they were having a Cyber Black Monday on this model, configured it the same way but it would cost $2,299 or $300 more! The $1,999 one was not on sale. So I spent an hour on chat while Dell looked at the two links I provided them. They came back and said there was no difference except price. And, she then said although they have a price match guarantee this does not apply to items on sale. I pointed out their's was on sale and not the "brick and mortar" store. I then ended chat. It has awesome reviews!!! But I would look for one that says R4! That is the newest model. I'm posting this just to help others as I have spent weeks trying to find the best most reliable gaming laptop so I hope this helps someone. ... show more

  • Thermal problems well known- beware.
Good laptop in every aspect except for the (now well documented) thermal issues. Wish I had know when I bought it. Returned without a hassle though!
