  • A Work of Art
CPU: 6th Generation Core i7 Capacity: 16 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD Style: WQXGA+ Touch
I bought this Alienware R2 because of the features and price. I have spent months looking for a Quad resolution touch screen laptop with SSD drive, good battery life and an I7 processor with lots of RAM. I had hoped to pay less than $1K for it. At first I saw deals on the R1 series that were close to my price point, but I would have had to go through an upgrade from Windows 8 to 10. Normally, that wouldn't have bothered me, but I had gone through a similar upgrade on my Dell desktop and experienced problems with both sound and video drivers. I decided to pay a little more and get the R2 which comes with Windows 10 already loaded. Unfortunately, it is Windows 10 Home, and upgrading to Pro costs about another $99. I haven't done that yet. When I unboxed this laptop I was immediately smitten. It is really sharp, the display is small (13"), but that translates into lighter weight and longer battery life. It can clearly display really small fonts (you need good eyesight), but, I left the fonts at the default of 250%, which is easier on my eyes. Some applications don't recognize the "larger font" settings though. So, I get inconsistent results at times with older applications. The touch screen and case do show fingerprints. It would have been nice if it had an oleinophobic coating like the iPhone. I haven't figured out how to safely clean the screen yet. The Intel Video driver has crashed and restarted a couple of times since I got this. Not sure what's going on with that. The sound seems to work great. When I plug in my Sony headphones it correctly recognizes the microphone button. I know that the Alienware name and themes are purely marketing, but I have to say that this machine performs impressively at a reasonable price compared to a MS surface product with similar features. Oh, and by the way, another reviewer clued me in that ordering a single SSD is probably a better idea than the SSD+1TB HDD. Apparently the SSD and HHD come raided together making reconfiguration and OS upgrades difficult. ... show more

  • Great! Great!
CPU: 6th Generation Core i7 Capacity: 16 GB RAM / 256 GB SSD Style: WQXGA+ Touch
This laptop is amazing. I don't own an alienware before. I have used a regular asus for 2 years. When I got the laptop, I am impressed by the product. The external design is amazing! It is not like the current simplicity style. I blends the fancy gaming computer style to the simplicity and gives a really unique finish. Definitely so cool. The thickness of alienware was a big worry for me, but when I saw the product I did not worry anymore. The thickness is consistent with the whole design and you will not feel it is thick. I would not feel so much difference in thickness between this and my old asus. Gaming people say Alienware is expensive. However, I believe at least from the perspective of external design. It worth your money. Believe me, it just looks fantastic. If you are not sure, go check it out in your local microsoft stores. The key board is the best i have ever used. Not very load. Better than the Mac's I have been using in my school. The screen has a extremely high resolution which is gorgeous, but the screen reflects light a lot, but I personally don't really care. The speed is so fast and it will not get very hot when I run big software. The thermal planning is perfect. It runs current games pretty well. I have played some fallout 4 and it runs smoothly without any problems. I also runs minecraft with the highest shadow pack, and other high setting. It also runs smoothly. The high resolution is great, but a lot of software does not work well for this resolution. A lot of things are really small on the screen. I think the software companies will update their products for high resolution soon. I have been using win10. It seems like microsoft sacrifices all other machines for their 2in1s. It is great in general, but has few bugs. The experience is generally good. A great laptop for people how play some games and also need a powerful machine for work. And it is very portable, not like the 15inches and 17inches. Great for computer nerds studying computer science in colleges like me. lol ... show more

  • Sometime dreams ALMOST come true...
CPU: 6th Generation Core i7 Capacity: 16 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD Style: WQXGA+ Touch
Update: 14 Nov 2016 Sometimes dreams DON'T come true... This is one of them. Since the laptop arrived I have had chronic problems, most related to kernel errors and updates from the manufacturer (Dell) that break things. As I write this, my laptop is completely dead. This past weekend I tried restoring the system to its original factory settings, wiping out gigabytes of software in the process, as a final attempt to set things right. It worked for a while. Then I tried applying updates from Dell. The laptop is now unable to even boot. Not in safe mode. Not via command prompt. Nothing. I hereby acknowledge defeat. I'm sending it back. :'( ----- For years I have drooled over Alienware computers, dreaming of having a system that blew through applications like they were nothing, of having a system where games would be responsive and have incredible graphics... sigh. FWIW I do like this system. The issues I have with it probably have more to do with getting used to Windows 10 than anything else, although the intensely high-res screen poses issues I never would have expected. Good points: * The system IS wicked fast! I have never had a computer that booted and shut down so quickly. * The graphics ARE amazing! One of my recent acquisitions is the game Obduction, the latest creation from the guys who made Myst and Riven. So beautiful! Yum! * Game play has been great for every game I've played. The response time is wonderful. Although I did have to change my virus-protection software. (I never realized Zone Alarm was such a system resource hog until I had a system with resources TO hog!) * Playing with the Alienware customizable color schemes was unexpected, but very cool! * When running on battery, the flashing power button is a welcome warning before the system shuts down! Not so good points: * Windows 10 sux! I've been using Windows for more years than I like to admit to, and Microsoft has outdone themselves when it comes to hiding settings and features. * I want to kill Cortana. Seriously! The wench needs to leave me the heck alone! * The native screen resolution is 3000x1800, which is great, but makes reading text a bit of a challenge for those of us with "tired" eyes. * Trying to figure out what settings to fiddle with to compensate for the extreme high-res screen has given me several dozen additional grey hairs. And even when I did finally figure it out, the fix is not universal. The overlay within Steam is still really, really tiny. * Some things render VERY crisply - I mean sharp. Other things, like web browsers, render fuzzily. I can web surf and use non-gaming applications, but half of the apps and icons look blurry, like a Hollywood glamour shot. Very annoying. * The surface of the laptop around the keyboard looks and feels kind of like rubber, and it picks up the oils from your hands like crazy! * And did I mention that Windows 10 sux? * And don't get me started on Apple! Could they POSSIBLY make it MORE difficult to transfer the sync settings for my iDevices to a new system??? Arrrrggghhhh!!! So, the upshot to this fairly jumbled mess is that I do like the system. If all you plan to do with it is play games, it's great. I feel like I have only scratched the surface and I'm looking forward to getting into more digital trouble. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a system with a little more versatility, I don't know that this is the best way to go. I'll let you know after I start loading Adobe software onto it. ... show more

  • Powerful laptop that looks great too!
CPU: 6th Generation Core i7 Capacity: 16 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD Style: WQXGA+ Touch
Gorgeous, extremely fast, one of a kind unit. Perfect size, not too big, not too small, keyboard and display are both fantastic. Not sure about the battery as i keep it plugged in all the time but this laptop is all that then some. Very happy with purchase. PS: Im not a gamer at all, i use my XBOX ONE for that, but i wanted a very powerful machine to run other apps such as Photoshop CS etc.. and this machine gets it done. ... show more

  • Sort of disapointed
CPU: 6th Generation Core i7 Capacity: 16 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD Style: WQXGA+ Touch
I did not encounter the track pad problem some people talked about. The screen is gorgeous and the speed of this device is great. The fans hardly even turn on under low loads and when they do, although they can get quite loud, the thermal management of this small device is impressive. The Klipsch speakers are great for a laptop although I liked the JBL speakers in my Samsung Ultrabook better. I especially like Dell's "desktop mode" for the battery which keeps the battery conditioned even when you leave the device plugged in for weeks at a time. The only advice I could give is to avoid updating any of the preloaded driver software unless absolutely necessary. I had an issue with getting Soundblaster X-Fi MB3 (software sound enhancer, not apart of the audio card) to work. The software is preloaded and according to Alienware, it should work out of the box! Get this device if you are running any of the new games or heavy CPU programs and you'll laugh at how easily it runs them! **EDIT** After 15 days, back and forth with Alienware support, I regrettably will say I experienced an issue with the internal sound. Alienware could not properly diagnose it, the speakers would crackle under low levels. If the laptop had not been so expensive, I probably would still recommend it, but for the price, the problem is unacceptable. **EDIT 2** Amazon has outstanding customer service and sent me another one. This one had the trackpad problem others have spoken about. I will be returning and not purchasing another Alienware. The problem is with Alienware and their quality control (Dell) and not Amazon. ... show more

  • Great Computer, Bad Support, Technical Issues
CPU: 6th Generation Core i7 Capacity: 16 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD Style: WQXGA+ Touch
I love every aspect of this Laptop with the exception of a few major details. The HD display is totally awesome. The fast SSD drive makes this thing a bigger speed daemon than it already is. Some points to consider when trying to make a purchasing decision: Dell says the HDMI is 2.0, but I've read reviews saying it is 1.4. If this is important to you, be sure to look into this. If it is 2.0, make sure your monitor supports HDMI 2.0 or you will only be able to get 30 FPS on a 4K HD monitor. The USB ports are only USB 3.1, Gen 1 (USB 3.0). That means 5 Gpps, not 10 Gpps. You would think that a computer with Thunderbolt 3 would at least utilize USB 3.1 Gen 2 on the USB ports (you can get this from the Thunderbolt port by using a USB cable where one end of the cable is a USB-C connector). But, if you are using your Thunderbolt port to hook up a DisplayPort Monitor, then you won't be able to use it for high speed USB. All in all, it is a great computer. But, alas, I had to return mine. The Thunderbolt port is basically a USB-C port for use with USB-C devices (USB 3.1 Gen 2, and DisplayPort.). I purchased the Dell TB15 Thunderbolt 3 dock and the AKiTiO Thunder3 Duo Pro RAID enclosure. This computer does not work with either of these devices. Or, at least, the computer I received does not. Neither of these devices would connect. I called Dell and after 2 hours of talking and holding, I was ultimately told that the TB15 dock is not compatible with the Alienware. But, that doesn't explain why the AKiTiO RAID enclosure doesn't work either. I asked if I could send the computer in to have them check the Thunderbolt port and the Tech refused and wouldn't let me do it. I asked him if he is telling me that this computer is not compatible with any Thunderbolt 3 devices and he basically said "Yes". So back it goes because my main reason for purchasing was the Thunderbolt 3 port and the assortment of Thunderbolt 3 devices that are coming onto the market now. I still believe the Port is defective but they won't look at it. Now, here is the big kicker. 1. Dell considers your purchase date to be the date they sold the computer to Amazon (or the Amazon reseller). They start your warranty from this date. 2. Dell told me that I'm not entitled to service because I'm not the original owner. The Tech told me I would have to initiate a transfer from Amazon (or the reseller) to me and that would take awhile. So, basically, Amazon is the owner of this computer and not you. Not sure how legal this is. Just some thoughts for those of you comparing this to other computers in order to make a purchasing decision. Of course, Amazon backs what it sells and if a product is defective, they take it back. This is the reason I purchased from Amazon. Their customer service cannot be beat. Kenny ... show more

CPU: 6th Generation Core i7 Capacity: 16 GB RAM / 512 GB SSD Style: WQXGA+ Touch
Pretty good gaming laptop. I was kind of hesitant to buy this laptop due to the low reviews. But the one I got has been great so far! I am very thrilled to own this laptop. The delivery was on time and in great shape when they shipped it. I really like the touch screen and the video quality is great and nice with the nvidia 960, especially when playing games. The keyboard has a great touch to it and very soft(quiet) when typing. The touchpad was ok...I used to have macbook and the touchpad was kinda rough to touch in alienware. But overall, i'm inlove with this laptop. ... show more
