Doing things on computers is one of my superpowers. Doing things in the physical world with my hands, not so much. My brain dreams of making physical things—and I see smart tools like this one as the best way for me to accomplish that goal. There is a lot of learning involved for me to get a tool like this up and running, however. Assembly can be a huge challenge for me. With help from the manual provided in the box and videos posted on the product listing, I was able to get this unboxed and fully set up within a few hours, all on the same day—less than half a day actually. That is a personal best for me. The unopened tool sat in my office for a couple of weeks before that because….fear of unboxing and trying to assemble. Don’t be afraid! The process was surprisingly straightforward. The components seem simple enough, accurate and of good quality. The engraver is hooked up to my wifi and I am starting to use it. The manufacturer provides a lot of tools and support through their website to help me learn how. I can connect the engraver to my Mac! (I was afraid I would need a PC.) There is still much for me to learn, but getting this far is a significant success for me. The main set up challenge I encountered, besides my procrastination, was installing the cable connectors to the limit switch and motor respectively during step 10. The manual shows the connectors sliding fully on to the male end, but I can only get them partially on without starting to bend the male end. So far this doesn’t seem to be stopping the engraver from working, but it’s something I will keep an eye on.

The Alpha MK2 has quickly become the workhorse of my equipment. I work primarily with wood and acrylic, and this laser cutter can easily cut through thick panels up to 15mm thick. The offline batch mode saves me a ton of time—I can set it up, run it, and come back to see the finished product. The stainless steel color engraving option is also impressive; my clients love its unique rainbow metallic look.

The 20W laser is fast. Really fast. I used it to batch cut 3mm thick plywood keychains at twice the speed of my previous engraver. While I quickly got familiar with the AlgoOS system through the smart touch screen, it took some time to learn LightBurn and some advanced settings. The smart air pump changes everything - it automatically clears the fumes and keeps the engraving lines clear and sharp. This product is very practical for serious makers who don't mind spending a little time adjusting the settings to get strong performance.
