  • Mixed feelings on this but definitely retro
Color: Red/Black
I am mostly happy with this item. I ordered this to introduce my kids to what it used to be like before streaming services and smartphones and it definitely does that. Unfortunately maybe a little too well. I felt that the sound quality was lacking. It is true that it is similar to small radios I had back in the day but for this price I was expecting a little better sound quality. This has virtually no bass at all. In fact turning the tone control does nothing except make it sound like a clock radio. Right now I'm just using it as a bluetooth speaker for watching TV in bed on my tablet. Where it really shines is the new added features we didn't have back then. The bluetooth works great and it's really cool to be able to record on tape from multiple sources. If making mix tapes is your primary goal then you'll love it. It works great for that. If you're looking for good sound quality you might want to look elsewhere. Construction wise it really feels well built. It's surprisingly heavier than I expected it to be and the plastic feels solid and durable. The red color is very striking and it looks really nice overall. If the sound quality had been a little better I would've given it 5 stars. I know it's a retro product but older jam boxes had better bass response than this. Especially when you can get bluetooth speakers in this price range that blow this away sound wise. And they would be rechargeable too and not rely on batteries. Overall I give it 4 stars and would give it 4.5 if it was an option. I realize they are walking a tight rope trying to decide whether to deliver modern sound quality or an authentic retro experience. Maybe I'm just so spoiled by modern technology that I don't remember how bad it was back then. Either way for the money the sounds quality just wasn't there for me. I'd definitely recommend this if your main goal is to experience the retro feel of an old boom box and let your kids play with your old tape collection. If sound quality or the lack of a recharging function are important to you then you might not be happy with it. ... show more

  • Cool retro boombox but only ok sound quality and NO AUX
Color: Pink/White
I got this mini retro boombox for the nostalgia factor. I'm a child of the 80s and 90s so I know a thing or 2 about boomboxes! This one is so similar to ones I had back in the day, with some upgrades but also sadly with some of the not-so-fun old school drawbacks. Looks-wise, they nailed it. It looks like it transported here from my high school bedroom. Sound-wise, it is pretty similar to ones I had growing up, but that's not a compliment. It's pretty low-fi, even with the bass boost. My echo show has better sound quality. But it's fine for casual listening. The construction is pretty good. The buttons and switches all feel solid. The cassette door opens and closes nicely. Upgrades that the old units didn't have are Bluetooth connectivity, which is obviously a modern game-changer. It also accepts SD cards and USB, but I can't see myself using those much since I'll mainly be using it as a Bluetooth speaker. Unfortunately they did not add a critical feature to make it truly portable...it is not rechargeable. You must plug it in or put in 4 C-cell batteries. Not the retro experience I really am looking for. I need to set the record straight on the AUX situation. It DOES NOT have an AUX input, despite what other reviewers say. Nothing on the radio is labeled AUX, the instructions don't say how to access AUX, and more importantly, I tried it and it definitely does not work. Someone said the headphone jack doubles as an AUX input but they clearly didn't try it like I did. The only place AUX is mentioned is in the specs, and I think that's a mistake because it's not mentioned anywhere else. I have another AIWA retro boombox that does have an AUX input, but it's a separate jack and clearly labeled. Anyway, this boombox is kitschy and cool, but it's not a serious piece of electronics. Get it for the vibe. ... show more

  • Tiny boombox with plenty of sound
Color: Red/Black
This is truly the portable speaker setup that has an array of options to choose from. The radio works fine, and the little pullout antenna is one of my favorite features. I typically use bluetooth to connect, so I gave that a pretty thorough test. The bluetooth range goes about 20-25ft, but will start shortening considerably if I go outside or several rooms away. Connection is strong, with no delay or stuttering from my phone. My preferred sound profile was to set the bass to the max, and treble about 60%. It gave the music depth without sounding too tinny or rattly. The volume at full blast was plenty for the center of my house. It's not as loud as some other boomboxes, but for the size of this thing, it's pretty impressive. It is very lightweight and compact, making it easy for me to haul to and from work so I have some noise at the office. The radio works via power cord or four 1.5v C cell batteries. ... show more

  • A great boombox
This is an excellent product from the quality of the construction to the sound quality and the variety of the playback and record options. On the outside, the case is strong, quality material, each switch, knob and button has a positive, quality feel to it. On many low priced cassette players, the cassette door flies open like a mouse trap. On this, it is dampened and gracefully opens. To me that is a sign of quality and attention to detail. The cassette player itself operates smoothly and reproduces clear steady playback with no wobbling or jerkiness. One thing would make it even more excellent. It doesn't have auto-stop but the quality of everything else makes up for that. The variety of playback and record options is amazing. Radio, Bluetooth, aux, USB SD card to tape. Radio, Bluetooth, aux, tape to USB or SD card The sound quality is high on all the playback modes and everything is simple to use. The record to USB memory stick or SD card is simple and useful. I recorded both from the tape and the FM radio to the USB memory stick. The files are MP3 and simply named File0001 etc. You can rename the files on a computer so when you plug the memory stick into your car you can identify the songs. It is a simple system. I played a Christmas Music Box tape and the sound was clear with beautiful highs and lows. The recordings reproduced an equally beautiful sound. Years ago aiwa made some good boomboxes and other good sound equipment. It is not the same company now but the old one would have been proud to have their name on this Boombox because of its high quality. It is a good value at this price. ... show more
