  • I'm finally cool!
Color: White Size: 8500 BTU
I got this to cool off the upstairs because the central air has a hard time getting to the third floor. Setup was a pain because the piece that goes on the window is much larger than a standard size window... had to use garden shears to cut through the plastic. Other than that, it went ok. It is heavy. Getting the box upstairs was not easy for me. Im sure I would have won Americas Funniest Home Videos. You need a very large bucket for the drain hose. I fill about 2.5 gallons in a 12 hour period in regular summer temps. The lights on the unit are very bright, so I cover them with a t shirt to sleep. It is noisy. I dont mind the noise because I sleep with a fan on every night for white noise, but if you are sensitive to sound when sleeping, you may want to skip this one. I would say it is slightly noisier than a regular air conditioner on high. It cools my upstairs from 77 to 72 in about 20 minutes. I would definitely purchase this again, assuming I'm able to get multiple summers out of it. It was worth every penny to be cool! ... show more

  • Super-Easy Setup
Our landlord is a duck, only spelled with an ‘i’. That’s why, when the unit that provides the heat and air conditioning for my bedroom (separate from the rest of the house) started struggling, I ran to Amazon to buy a portable air conditioner. See, I knew he’d run the tired game whereby he tries first to convince my daughter she agreed, by signing his lease, to do any and all repairs to his property. (Ask me how I knew he’d try this. Just ask me.) Once we explained that, no, that’s not what the lease states—and even if it did, any such clause that runs contrary to state law is unenforceable—he did what he always does, which is hire the least qualified company in town to send out their least qualified personnel to fix the unit. Just whenever they get around to the job. No rush. After all, it’s only August in South Carolina. The unit arrived before the workman. Big surprise. Amazon dropped off the box at the front door, rather than the side door that meant I could walk the box straight into the room where I planned to connect the unit. I’m 62 now, and somewhat feeble, but I did manage to drag the box inside. Once I removed the packaging, I was able to roll the unit to my room, because it’s on casters. There are built-in handles on each side, if you need to lift the unit. So, literally, the hardest part of this entire project was getting the box off the porch! The hookup was not difficult. I did it by myself. There are some things you’ll need that aren’t in the box: scissors, (optional) duct tape, and 2 AAA batteries for the remote. Also, the unit has a small plastic pipe to drain condensation, so if you don’t already have a suitable container, now’s the time to order one. I’m using a pan out of my kitchen, but drainage is a must, so deal with this now and avoid issues later. An old margarine container will work, for that matter. The piece that fits into the window comes with a simple screw, butterfly nut, and bracket, allowing you to lock the 2-piece panel into place once you have adjusted the pieces to the width of your window. I do want to give you some advice here: Hook the duct to the window bracket first (just stretch out the first 4-5 ridges on one end of the collapsed duct and screw the duct into the bracket that has the oval opening. It screws on easily enough, make 4-5 turns and done. Next, screw the small squarish bracket onto the opposite end of the duct, after you stretch out the first 4-5 sections. Don’t do what I did, which was to slide the bracket onto the unit, then try and twist the duct. That will simply unscrew the window end, and make you cuss. (Ask me how I know.) Halfway through, I thought I’d need duct tape, and I still *might* tape both ends of the duct later, but for now, I managed to get the duct connected and stable without duct tape. So, connect to window bracket, then screw the other bracket onto duct, then slide square bracket onto unit, and done. I set the temperature and took a well-earned nap, waking to a cool room, and a knock on the door, which was, of course, the world’s worst a/c repairman. On a scale from 1-10, with 10 being the noise from a jet engine taking off and 1 being a still, silent lake in an ancient forest miles from civilization, I’d rate the noise level a 6. The sound varies by how hard the unit’s working to pump out cold air, and naturally, once the sensor reaches the temp you’ve selected, the unit cuts off for a bit. I’m a writer who believes silence is golden. The nose this unit makes is not unlike my fan, meaning my brain just folds the sound into the background and life goes on. My habits and profession also mean I’m rarely trying to have a conversation when the unit’s running. Hopefully, other reviews will give more feedback on this, but I think a conversation would be possible without shouting. I grew up living in rental homes with old-fashioned window units. This one is not as loud as those. I also cannot tell you how well the remote works, because the included remote does not come with batteries. We have a gremlin who eats AA and AA batteries as soon as they’re purchased, and I didn’t realize I needed to order some alongside my portable air conditioner. The top is a flat surface with no decorative pattern, so the portable air conditioner can be used as a small tabletop, if needed. The controls are simple and intuitive. There’s a child lock, which is nice if you have toddlers. Or cats. Or a man with an internal freezer built into his DNA. There’s a sleep function which allows you to set a time for the unit to turn off, which saves on the power bill. I’d buy this unit again, and probably will, since my 30-year-old daughter seems to think she’s entered the, um, nuclear summer phase of womanhood, and is demanding full custody of my new portable air conditioner. ... show more

  • Cool placed well
Color: White Size: 8500 BTU
I love that the ac works well and cools down the room well. I dislike that it seems to leak sometimes. Otherwise, worth the money considering the hot weather and humidity we have had. Great purchase!

  • Allow for the gap
Color: White Size: 8000 BTU A010G
The price was excellent, so I didn't expect the product to be as good as it turned out. When installing it, save the packing material and have duct tape. You can cut it to fit the width of the window to help seal it. A pool noodle with help fill the gap of the top of a double hung window. Finally, get some silicone caulk (clear) for any odd gaps left over so you keep out weather and bugs. Most of your set up time will be fitting the window and be sure to allow for the hose. As you can see, we had to position the window up a bit so the hose would clear the window sill. This unit was installed in my son's room in a rental house in Gainesville Florida. Weather outside was in the high 90s with high humidity. The room got cold fast! He was thrilled. Besides having material to fill any gaps, consider pinning the window with a 1/4 inch pin through a 1/4 inch hole you can drill. On this type of old window, there are no tracks to put a clamp, so the pin worked perfectly. It is in tight so it can not be knocked out with a hammer from the outside. ... show more

  • The instructions are lacking
I was about to write a 1-star review for this item because I could not get it working and the response from the seller was delayed by days. I have been without a/c for 6 weeks so response was important to me. I read help from other buyers and it saved the day (especially the one that posted a picture of how to attach the hose to the exhaust part of the unit). I'm rating the buy as 4 stars because of how well it performs. It would be 5 stars but the instructions lacked so much and the seller was slow to respond. Setup would have been easy if I had known this: 1. The connector for the hose to the unit slides in from the outside - the grooves on it matter - if one way doesn't work, rotate it 180 degrees and then try. 2. If the unit does not power on, push the button on the part of the cord that plugs into the wall. Also: 1. The window attachment - the plastic between the hose and the bottom of the attachment gave me trouble, it's less than an inch in height. I used cardboard to accommodate. 2. The remote does not come with batteries. 3. It is really, really loud. Not a ding because I know that refrigerated air is loud. It really does the job. My office is a fairly small room that is open to the living room - it cools my office area great and even brings down the ambient temperature of the living room. I should say it works great in the weather I am in now - upper 80's - low 90's. ... show more
