I bought this product to use in a half wine barrel fountain. We had tried a lot of different products to keep water clean but none of them lasted more than a couple days. Then I came across this product. Because one tablet treats 150 gallons we cut it in half and tossed it in. The water had been in barrel a few days. Works pretty well, I use it in our dog water trough, our duck pond, and also my goat's water trough. Just need to let them dissolve because my stupid Catahoula likes to eat them. Thankfully she hasn't gotten sick.

I have goldfish and mosquito fish in my troughs, so weekly dumping and scrubbing is not an option for us. Plus, I have 7 - 150 gallon troughs, so that would be wasting a bunch of water each week. When the weather gets super hot in the summer, frequently above 100 degrees F on the reg here, I want the animals to have clean water to encourage them to drink. I am constantly on the hunt for the solution to have reasonably clean troughs. The stock tank defense has been added to what we already do to help slow the growth of algae and it seems to help, but just minimally so in my black Rubbermaid troughs. However, they do help better in the non-black troughs. Not sure if they have a temperature range that they work more ideally in?? Maybe the black troughs just get too warm? Not sure...so if you have no black water troughs, these might be a good option to help reduce your cleaning on your water troughs.

Starting with a clean trough and following product directions, this product does not work. Put first tablet in clean trough on day 0, second one 10 days later (middle of recommended interval). A few days later water was cloudy. At one week (minimum interval) added another tablet. No improvement. Have murky green water. This trough is also under an overhang which helps to prevent algae growth but that made no difference. Product does not work.

I've been using this product for several years and I think it works pretty well. This last order, it came packaged with several other items including a heavy ream of cardstock. During the shipping, the lid came off and all the tabs spilled out. Many of them ended up broken and/or crushed to dust. So bottom line, don't order this with anything remotely heavy.
