  • Easy to put together, took a couple of hours. Works smoothly. Clean-ups a breeze.
Style: Aerator
This review is for the Agri-Fab 45-0299 48-Inch Tow Plug Aerator. It took just a couple of hours to assemble it. The operation, the aerating, went smoothly. You will need to add weights to the tray. I cut part of the box it came it, to use as protection for the painted tray. I used 4 heavy weights that I had bought for my small J. Deere rider mower / snowplow. I secured them with bungee cords. If your mower runs too fast, and the lawn is uneven, a weight may fall out occasionally. (Next year I'll use straps, less flex than bungee cords and also drill a couple of attaching holes, placing them more strategically than the factory ones). Turning the mower to change your direction, with tow along attachments, is an acquired skill. LOL. Cleanup was a breeze. Do it as soon as your finished aerating, otherwise you'll be digging dried dirt out of the 'tangs' (It's a miserable task). All in all, a good experience. - Joe C ... show more

  • Built tough, does what's intended
Style: Aerator
Directions kinda suck but if you're handy you'll figure it out. Took a little over an hour to assemble. As other reviewers have mentioned, indeed WHERE MECHANICS GLOVES OR LEATHER GLOVES! Very sharp tines!! I had to add four cinder blocks to get 3-4" plugs. Works a ton better if your grass is super wet/saturated. The aerator rolls fine on grass but on gravel or dirt it sorta pisses you off (yes I had the lever in the correct position for travel, without tines dropped) I recommend putting cardboard or something down before lying cinder blocks on it, in two seconds they had the orange paint ripped up and down to bare metal. Make sure to remove cinder blocks/weights before unhooking from lawn tractor or it will flip over. To rent a plug aerator from H*me Dep*t is $80 for four hours. I figure in the long run I'm saving money by this purchase because I intend to aerate my lawn in Spring and Fall. My yard now looks like I was attacked by a million puppies pooping in the grass :) I debated buying the cheaper one that only punctured the ground but I'm glad I got this actual "plug" aerator. It was easy to clean with a hose and nozzle on jet, I have red clay dirt that wants to be cement when it dries, I'm glad the times were easy to clean. Took less than three minutes. Now I need to broadcast some Green Maker lawn fertilizer and I'm good to go. I used a cub cadet lawn tractor and it pulled it fine on low idle. I did have to remove my grass catcher because the draw bar wasn't going to reach. Hope this is the remedy to my patchy AZ grass. Glad I made the purchase. ... show more

  • Sturdy Frame, weak welds!
Style: Aerator
Overall a good machine and does the job but, I don't understand why Agri-Fab would build such a sturdy frame and make the spools so cheap. The spool welds are insufficient and the plastic bushings wear out in no time. If you are willing to replace these parts every couple of years, this is a good aerator (replacement spool $38). ... show more

  • Does a great job for cost.
Style: Aerator
Fairly easy to put together and did a good job with just two 1/2 blocks placed in top. Will probably use it annually going forward to keep the yard in its best shape.

  • Buy Elsewhere & have the right expectations
Style: Aerator
Full disclosure, I have been a fan of AgriFab in the past although this is the first new item I've bought in a long time. It's pretty obvious that AgriFab uses MAP for the price so although retailers can charge more, they can't advertise for less but it's usually the same price everywhere unless you find a sale or have discount options. That being said; I'd recommend buying locally or from a big box retailer near you because I recieved what I can only assume was either a returned item or one thay had a rough shelf life. It didn't look used and still had cosmoline all over it but the box was tapped closed, paint was chipped up, boxes inside were open and I was missing a bag of bolts and the owners manual/instructions. Despite these issues I wasn't willing to wait for replacements so delt with it and bought some carrage bolts and put it together. I will say it took a little time but wasn't in anyway a tough job and anyone with a minimal mechanical aptitude could look at the picture and figure it out. Okay, now to the part that really matters; how's it work? 1st I'll say that these are 100% better and tougher than the blade style or other economy brands however they still NOT commercial grade. I'm not saying that you couldn't use them all day everyday all summer long but don't be surprised if things break but for the home owner with a large property that uses when needed it should last a lifetime with proper maintenance of consumable parts. It does plug well if you plan around rain or prepare your ground first. I say this because if you have drought ridden severely compacted soil then you'd need more weight and the tounge isn't that great and not built for too much weight. I find that 2 to 3 cinder blocks is where my comfort level is. Also be especially careful and deliberate when backing up. Actually I'd recommend not to at all but thats not always possible so just be aware when you do, raise spikes and pay attention to the tounge. The only other concern I have is the durability of the plastic wheels; so far they are holding up but I do anticipate an upgrade will happen eventually. That's it! If you can live with all that then I'd definitely recommend the AgriFab 48 in plug Areator. Enjoy! ... show more

  • 3 Hours to assemble
Style: Aerator
Good product. Aerates well. Suggestion: needs to have a video purchaser can scan to assemble. Needs to have plastic covers for the tines because they are sharp and can cut you as it did me. Good pull behind aerator. Just time consuming to assemble. I used a you tube video of a guy that does a decent job. 4 star instead of 5 because the instruction Manuel on assembly is so so. ... show more

  • Love it

It took me over two hours to assemble. I was concerned it wouldn’t live up to my expectations. Once I got it put together, it works great. No problems hooking it to my zero turn

  • It took a little longer to assemble than I expected.
Style: Aerator
The instructions can be a little better as I had to dis-assemble parts and re-assemble but maybe it was my fault. Or maybe not. Heavier than I expected and also wider. I thought it would be 4' overall including wheels but the effective area is 4'. My riding mower had no problem pulling it and the plugs bit into the yard pretty good even though the ground was kind of dry. ... show more
