My FirstBuild Opal (the original version) stopped making ice and started screeching all the time. Decided to chunk it since it was 10 years old and got this one as a replacement. So much better than the Opal. First, it's a lot quieter. No screeching. There's a bit of a pumping sound when the pump activates that lasts for maybe 10-15 seconds and then a low level hum when Ice is being pushed out. But overall much quieter than the Opal. Second, it's so much easier to fill with water than the Opal. With the Opal, I had to find a pitcher that would fit inside the front to fill up the reservoir. With this device, you just lift the top and pull out the basket and fill with water. Third, it's much simpler to get ice out of this machine. With the Opal, you pull out the plastic bin and semi balance it on the front ledge and then scoop out ice. With this device, you just open the top lid and start scooping. Fourth, this device starts pushing out ice literally within 7-8 minutes, whereas with the Opal, it would take a good 30 minutes before ice starts popping out. The only issue I've had with this device is that the ice does tend to "stick" along the top of the basket where the IR sensors are that are used to turn off the machine because it thinks the bin is full. It only happens when the bin is about 3/4 full and the ice starts to build up and accumulate. If you want the bin to be 100% full, you have to push that stuck ice down into the bin to keep the machine in ice-making mode.

I am so pleased with this ice maker. It is a little noisy but it is so easy to clean., just push “clean” then put the drain hose in the sink when it finishes. It makes nugget ice quickly. It has a large water reservoir & makes ice quickly.

We purchased this machine because we didn’t want to spend a huge amount of money on the Opal. We had a ice machine before this one that was smaller, cheaper, and was not a nugget maker. It was loud and obnoxious, and broke after only two years. So far this machine is awesome, the ice is definitely nugget, his made quickly, and most importantly the machine is fairly quiet and unobtrusive. The only thing is that it might be a little bit big, but we actually like that because it stores lots of ice and lots of water. Would recommend. I will come back and edit this if the machine breaks within 3 to 4 years. So far so good. EDIT: Two days later, the machine randomly stopped making ice, no combination of button pushes or unplugging and plugging back in would fix it. Back to Amazon it goes. No response from manufacturer support team.

Does a great job producing ice and the family loves the nuggets. It was able to keep up with 12 of us over Christmas. It is a bit loud when actually making the ice which surprised me. Also, due to the slightly warmer temperature of nugget ice, when trying to save up extra and move it to a container in the regular freezer, it does freeze into one solid chuck making it nearly impossible to break apart and scoop out. But overall I’m a fan.

Works great and ice pellets taste good which is key for me as I have had an issues with some other machines regardless of the qualityof water j put in. Have never run out of ice even with guests as it will produce ice just as fast as people take it. If you have a very quiet home the machine will fit in just fine.
