CPU: i5-8250u Capacity: 8GB / 256GB
Purchased this laptop as a downgrade to my Alienware 13r3. I'm done gaming on the PC and wanted something lightweight with good battery life and this Acer checked all of the boxes for me. Couple of things for those of you who want to buy this laptop and possibly do some upgrades or have some specific questions that don't seem to be answered properly. SSD Upgrade: The standard M.2 SSD that was included with mine was the 256gb variant that I think was the SK Hynix brand. I remember reading reviews that the drive was of the cheaper variants that don't take full advantage of NVME speeds. I swapped out that drive with my personal Samsung 960 EVO 1tb drive which was pretty simple. There are only 11 screws on bottom of case to take out. There are no screws underneath the rubber feet. If you can't get a plastic or metal shim between the bottom plate and laptop frame you can pry it back at the side close the screen hinge. The swap was simple but one other thing I noted that caused me an issue. I went with a fresh windows 10 install via USB instead of using Samsung magician to mirror the drives. Because of this I had Windows authentication errors and had to purchase a Windows 10 Home license. I'm sure I could have started over by mirroring the drive but I didn't feel like starting fresh. The other thing I did after the SSD swap was I updated the BIOS from version 12 to 15. This may have also been part of the problem. I can say for sure though that I'm getting great speeds on the Samsung in the Acer. See attached image from CrystalDiskMark. WiFi Card Upgrade: The included network card with the machine was the Intel 7265. I noticed right away a downgrade in reception on picking up my wireless network along with slower bluetooth standards. I upgraded the card to the Intel 9260 and had much improved reception and BT performance. See attached speed test using Frontier Internet's 300mbps service. I'm at a distance of about 20 feet from the router in my apartment that's in use by 9 other devices. The BT 5.0 performance with the card is also great. I was using my Jabra Elite 65t active earbuds to watch Netflix on the laptop this morning in bed with little to no audio lag. Charging via USB C: I can confirm that laptop charges via it's USB-C port. Shown in the 3rd picture is an Anker USB-C to USB-C cable plugged up to the laptop with the battery indicator in the windows task bar showing charging. I do have this cable plugged up to the USB C fast charging port of the following Anker charger. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01D8C6ULO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Even though it's a fast charging port and quality cable the laptop does say that it's charging slowly and if I want faster charging I should plug it up to the stock 45w AC adapter, but most importantly the USB-C charging solution does work with this laptop which is a nice surprise. All I can say so far is this purchase is great. Fast laptop with everything I need. I don't need an I7, 16gb of RAM, or discrete graphics since I'm done gaming on a PC for now. I do recommend upgrading the SSD to something with more space and the network card for sure. The network card may be the best upgrade for the money as about $25 gets you the Intel 9260 and the switch is easy. As usual be careful on the network card switch. Invest in some small tools such as precision screwdrivers and micro needle nose pliers and be gentle with the antennae leads and you shouldn't have a problem. ... show more

  • Feather-weight champion. Some ergonomic workarounds can help.
CPU: i5-8250u Capacity: 8GB / 256GB
This review is for Acer Swift 5 the i5/256GB version. After using it for about three weeks, and with some workarounds, I’m very satisfied overall. If you are looking for an economical 14” laptop with the least weight to carry around, I think Acer has produced a winner in terms of stylish looks, features, and affordable price. If the weight is the main factor for you, you will not find a lighter 14” laptop (not even a 13” for that matter). When you pick Swift 5 up for the first time, you would think it’s a plastic display dummy – until you realize you are holding an actual functioning machine. There is only one other offering I’ve looked at, the LG Gram series that has the same feather weight. You could get a non-touch screen version of LG at Amazon in the same price range, but if you insist on a touchscreen, you’ll have to go for the higher LG model with i7/512GB, which will cost you $500 more than Swift 5 - ouch, if you don’t care about the processor or extra disk space. Regarding the touchscreen, the Swift 5 had a pleasant surprise for me. The lid flips all the way flat at 180 degrees, making it much easier to use in tablet mode, or to lay flat on the desk for drawing with a stylus (the LG on the other hand only goes to 150 degrees). Not a true 2-in-1, but it’s close enough…sort of a 1½-in-1. Besides the laptop itself, the power adapter is also very lightweight and compact – a factor to consider if you plan to haul the laptop around all the time. Plus, the laptop supports USB-C charging, so you can use a 3rd party adapter as well. Note that the LG Gram adapter is bulkier and heavier, plus there is some confusion about the LG Gram and USB-C charging – it appears it’s not supported, leaving you stuck with the bulkier OEM bar (in fairness to LG though, it has longer battery life). The Swift 5 battery life is Ok but not impressive. It’s definitely not 8 hours, but realistically 5-6 hours of average use. Thankfully, the compact adapter is easy to carry around. Apart from the known keyboard annoyances others have already commented on, the keyboard lettering is very faint and hard to see unless the ambient light is bright enough – I find myself needing to turn the keyboard backlight more often than with other laptops I’ve owned – of course that does not help the battery life either. I also wish the backlight was adjustable to high/low, but it isn’t. The remaining comments are for those of us who are extra conscious about the ergonomics. The fan noise has a slightly whistling high pitch to it, which I find annoying in silent environments. Using the Windows power settings, I capped the CPU usage at 80%, and the fan stopped engaging. The machine is pleasantly silent all the time now. Since I mostly do office processing, the CPU cap does not impact my work. The screen is the usual glossy as with most other laptops. You can buy a generic matte screen protector on Amazon to take care of that (make sure it’s touch-compatible) The keyboard panel and keys are made from the same metal alloy as the rest of the body, which gets to look a little silvery and reflective for my liking under bright overhead lights at certain angles. The screen bezels seem to be of a more matte texture, and I wish the keyboard was made from the same material. The golden hinge bar is very sleek but seemed especially distracting. I put a strip of matte-finish Scotch tape on it, and it turned from shiny gold to matte gold – not distracting anymore. Overall this wasn’t a big problem for me because I don’t like to work under bright lights, so it’s something I only occasionally noticed. On the plus side, the slight silvery finish gives the laptop a really sleek look throughout, so aesthetics lovers will be pleased. One more plus - according to an in-depth review from NotebookCheck (independent non-promotional reference), no PWM was detected. To be fair, I don’t know how much PWM really impacts your eyes, but it’s surely better not to have it. Overall I give it 4 ½ stars – and rounding up to 5. ... show more

  • Unusable
CPU: i5-8250u Capacity: 8GB / 256GB
The first one I sent back bc the fan noise was too loud. The 2nd one arrived but right out of the box had a very strange problem where the curser acts on its own, opening windows and clicking on things all by itself, I'm unable to stop it nor overpower it with the touch pad, or a mouse. Took it to Acer company HQ to repair and they returned it claiming the issue was fixed but it's not. I'm extremely disappointed because this issue makes the computer unusable. It is also creepy that it just totally acts on its own opening whatever windows that it wants. Update: Took the computer to Acer a second time, first time they replaced touchpad. which did not fix issue and seemed to make it worse. Second time replaced touchscreen. Now also operating worse than ever. The computer just completely freezes right after turning on. I can't control it with the touchpad or touchscreen. I wish one of these two companies would step up and either replace it with one that properly works or Amazon refund my money for this lemon!I I haven't been able to use this computer since I purchased it in December it is now April. I also bought an Asus in Dec from best buy, so I can get by while I wait for this issue to get resolved, but if this Acer was my only computer it would be even more awful. ... show more
